Final Day Of Spring Meet At Churchill Downs Features Carryover, Mandatory Payout In Derby City 6

Bettors have a lucrative $166,087 carryover in the Derby City 6 to chase Saturday for the 12-race closing day program at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky.

There is a mandatory payout in Saturday's 20-cent all-stakes Derby City 6, which covers Races 7-12 starting at approximately 3:50 p.m. (all times Eastern) because the Stephen Foster afternoon program doubles as closing day of the 38-day Spring Meet.

The jackpot was $166,087 at the conclusion of Friday's action.

All monies will be distributed Saturday to ticket holders with the most winners in the six-race series. Track officials estimate the force-out of Saturday's total Derby City 6 pool should eclipse $1 million with new money.

The last time the jackpot was paid was 16 race days ago on Saturday, May 29 – Stephen Foster Preview Day – when Churchill Downs had a mandatory force-out of the jackpot with a $150,655 carryover. That day's pool was $1,236,502 and the all-sources handle on the 11-race program eclipsed $14 million.

Takeout on the Derby City 6 is just 15% – one of the lowest multi-race wager takeout rates in American racing – and only costs 20 cents per combination.

Saturday's closing day sequence features 61 entered horses for an average of 10.2 entries per race:

Race 7: $150,000 War Chant, 3-year-olds, one mile on turf, eight entries
Race 8: $150,000 Debutante (Listed), 2-year-old fillies, six furlongs, 10 entries
Race 9: $150,000 Bashford Manor (Grade III), 2-year-olds, six furlongs, 11 entries
Race 10: $300,000 Wise Dan (Grade II), 4-year-olds and up, 1 1/16 miles on turf, 10 entries
Race 11: $600,000 Stephen Foster (Grade II), 4-year-olds and up, 1 1/8 miles, nine entries
Race 12: $150,000 Tepin, 3-year-old fillies, one mile on turf, 13 entries

In addition to the Derby City 6, there is a $14,384 Super Hi 5 carryover in the final race, the Tepin, which also must be paid out to the most winners.

The first of 12 races is 12:45 p.m. and the finale is scheduled for 6:27 p.m.

Gaffalione Wins Jockey Title, Cox Leads Trainers As Spring Meet Ends At Churchill Downs

With one day of racing remaining at the 38-day Spring Meet, jockey Tyler Gaffalione, who has quickly risen to one of the country's top riders, secured his fourth-straight title at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. and fifth overall.

Through 37 days of racing, the 26-year-old Florida native recorded 47 wins from 215 starters. He led second-place Ricardo Santana Jr. by 17 wins.

“We've been extremely fortunate to ride some top-class horses this meet,” Gaffalione said. “It's been a wild meet overall but very successful. I'm very grateful to everyone who helped me get to this point.”

Among Gaffalione's most notable wins at the meet were Sconsin in the $150,000 Grade 3 Winning Colors Stakes, Field Day in the $150,000 William Walker Stakes, and Bango in the $110,000 Kelly's Landing Overnight Stakes.

Following Saturday's closing day card, Gaffalione plans to take some time off in Florida before heading to Saratoga for their meet, which opens July 15.

In the Spring Meet leading trainer race, three-time local champion Brad Cox held a 19-to-17 win advantage over record 24-time winner Steve Asmussen, seven-time leader Mike Maker, and Brendan Walsh. Cox had entries in Races 2, 5, 6, 7, 10, 11, and 12. Asmussen is the only trainer that could pass Cox with horses entered in Races 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, and 12. Maker and Walsh can only tie Cox with two horses entered. Maker had entrants in Races 10 and 11 while Walsh had horses in Races 4 and 11.

In the leading owner race, Kirk Wycoff's Three Diamonds Farm secured at least a share of the title with six wins. He had horses entered in Races 10 and 11. He held a one-win lead over Juddmonte, who had one entrant in Race 10. Calumet Farm, who was two wins behind, had two horses entered in Races 1 and 7. Godolphin recorded three wins with one day remaining of the meet and had horses entered in Races 5, 11, and 12.

Racing in Kentucky will switch to Ellis Park starting Sunday. Live racing beneath the Twin Spires returns Thursday, Sept. 16.

Churchill Downs Spring Meet Concludes on a High

All-sources wagering on Churchill Downs’ abbreviated 27-date Spring Meet totaled $240.5 million, which was a 53.3% increase from the 32 days of racing that followed last year’s Kentucky Derby. Additionally, the average daily handle was up 81.7% from $4.9 million one year ago to $8.9 million this season.

Shortened to seven weeks from May 16-June 28, the 2020 meet was staged under strict government-sanctioned protocols and without spectators because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
This season, Churchill Downs experienced four of the track’s six largest non-Derby, Oaks or Breeders’ Cup betting days in track history, led by a record $19.3 million May 23 (Stephen Foster Preview Day). Other big days: $16.8 million was wagered May 30 (Winning Colors/Old Forester Mint Julep); $14.3 million May 16 (Opening Day); and $13.8 million June 27 (Stephen Foster Day).

A total of 2,536 horses made starts in the 268 races for a substantial average of 9.5 horses per race–up from 8.4 horses in 2019. Purses paid to horsemen totaled $15.6 million and averaged $576,000 per day compared to last year’s $601,000 daily average. The average purse per race was $58,000 compared to last season’s $63,000.

This season, Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen extended his Churchill Downs training title record to 23 with 17 wins, one better than Brad Cox (16), and he overtook south Louisville native Dale Romans as the track’s all-time leading trainer. Asmussen has won 747 career races at Churchill Downs, three more than Romans, who surpassed Bill Mott Nov. 12, 2017 after 31 years in the top spot. Mott, who has 728 career wins at Churchill Downs, became only the seventh trainer in history to record 5,000 career wins when Moon Over Miami won at the Louisville track June 20.

In the jockey’s standings, Tyler Gaffalione easily defeated 19-time local riding champion Corey Lanerie by capturing 31 wins through the meet, seven more than Lanerie who collected 24. In the owner’s race, owners Ken and Sarah Ramsey earned their record 33rd title as the leading owners at Churchill Downs. On May 24, Ramsey’s registered their 500th win beneath the Twin Spires, and finished the season with a total of 504 career Churchill Downs wins. Gayle Benson’s G M B Racing, who campaigns GII Stephen Foster S. winner Tom’s d’Etat (Smart Strike), was the meet’s leading money-earning owner with $368,532.
Racing returns to Churchill Downs in nine weeks for the rescheduled Kentucky Derby Week (Sept. 1-5). The 146th running of the Longines GI Kentucky Oaks and GI Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve will be held with spectators under strict guidelines Sept. 4 and Sept. 5, respectively.
