SWEET ZAZ (f, 3, Nyquist–Century Park, by General Meeting) was beaten double digits into 12th when debuting in a nine-furlong turf event in March, but switches to perhaps a more suitable surface for this second go. A $67K Keeneland September buyback, the late April foal is out of the winner of the 2009 GIII Santa Ysabel S. (synthetic) who was purchased by Narvick International out of the 2017 KEENOV sale and produced a filly by Exaggerator in Kentucky that was subsequently exported to Japan. Century Park dropped Sweet Zaz in the Bluegrass and has also since been sent to Japan, where she foaled a colt from the first crop of GII Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint winner Four Wheel Drive (American Pharoah) Mar. 25. 5th-CKO, ¥13,400,000 ($100k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1200mT
PROTOPOROS (JPN) (c, 2, War Front–Cavale Doree {Fr}, by Sunday Break {Jpn}) debuts in the Carrot Farm green-and-white hoops and is the first foal from his dam, a Group 3 winner in France and third in the 2016 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies' Turf for trainer Christophe Ferland. Cavale Doree was purchased by Katsumi Yoshida for 650,000gns ($883,272) with this colt in utero at the 2019 Tattersalls December Mares Sale. B-Northern Racing

 

ART PEPPER (c, 2, Frosted–Tim's Girl, by Broken Vow) cost trainer Hideyuki Mori $150K at KEESEP last year and is out of an unraced full-sister to Grade I-placed juvenile filly Broken Spell–the dam of SW Lord Dragon (Oxbow)–and a half-sister to recent Horseshoe Indianapolis S. winner Heavenly Hellos (Overanalyze). The gray colt's third dam Be a Prospector (Mr. Prospector), a half-sister to the important sire Belong to Me, produced MGSW Away (Dixieland Band), the dam of MGSW/GISP Eight Belles (Unbridled's Song). Notable US-Bred and -Sired Runners in Japan: June 4-5, 2022

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this weekend running at Chukyo Racecourse. The penultimate Group 1 event of the spring racing calendar is set for Sunday at Tokyo, which hosts the G1 Yasuda Kinen. Two-time G1 February S. hero Cafe Pharoah (American Pharoah) tries the grass for just the second time in his career, while the bonny mare Lotus Land (Point of Entry) tries to improve on her cracking runner-up effort when last seen in the G1 Takamatsunomiya Kinen in late March. Elsewhere in Japan over the weekend are the first foals to race by the expatriated Beach Patrol and Mind Your Biscuits, among other Japanese stallions:

SATONO MISCHIEF (JPN) (c, 2, Into Mischief–Play Pretty, by Indian Charlie) is out of a daughter of Broodmare of the Year Oatsee (Unbridled), whose notable produce include treble Grade I winner Shackleford (Forestry); GISW Lady Joanne (Orientate); MGSWs Baghdaria (Royal Academy) and Afleeting Lady (Afleet Alex); and SW/MGSP Stephanoatsee (A.P. Indy). Shadai Farm acquired dam Play Pretty for $750K with this colt in utero at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton November Sale. Satono Mischief is bred on the same cross as Grade I-winning juvenile filly Dayoutoftheoffice. B-Shadai Farm

MANIBHADRA (c, 2, Speightstown–Trini Brewnette, by Milwaukee Brew) is the first foal from his dam, a two-time Ontario-bred stakes winner and daughter of Sovereign Award winner Dancing Allstar (Millennium Allstar), herself the dam of Canadian champion female sprinter Summer Sunday (Silent Name {Jpn}). Corser Thoroughbreds purchased Trini Brewnette for $195K at Keeneland November in 2019 and this colt paid most of that bill when hammering to Hideyuki Mori for $225K at KEESEP last fall. Speightstown's 35 winner from 43 Japanese starts includes G1SW Mozu Superflare and GSW Matera Sky. B-Corser Thoroughbreds (KY)

Katsumi Yoshida acquired My Happy Face for $425K with this colt in utero at Keeneland November in 2018 and the Mar. 25 foal debuts in the colors of Yoshida's wife Kazumi, with top jockey Takeshi Yokoyama in the irons. 6th-CKO, ¥14,250,000 ($111k), Allowance, 3yo, 1200m
CLOS DE MESNIL (f, 3, Practical Joke–Valiant Emilia {Per}, by Pegasus Wind), the $750K topper at the 2021 OBS March sale, opened her account at first asking last November (see below, SC 7) and gets back onto what appears to be her preferred footing after finishing down the field in a six-furlong turf allowance when last seen Jan. 10. A daughter of Peru's champion older mare of 2014, Clos de Mesnil was bought back on a bid of $65K at KEENOV in 2019 and was a $120K KEESEP grad before lighting up the tote in Ocala. The filly's third dam produced GSW & G1SP Thundering Emilia (Thunder Gulch), the dam of 2021 GII Tampa Bay Derby hero Helium (Distorted Humor). B-Teneri Farm (KY)

CORDON ROUGE (f, 3, American Pharoah–Champagne Room, by Broken Vow) is the first foal from her dam, the Eclipse Award-winning filly of her generation in 2016 on the strength of her victory in that year's GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Filles. Champagne Room was acquired privately by Northern Farm in 2018, foaled this filly Feb. 24, 2019, and was covered by Justify before being exported to Japan. Cordon Rouge, who is inbred 4×3 to 1990 GI Kentucky Derby hero Unbridled, has one start to her credit, a near-miss second going this course and distance Mar. 13 (video, SC 8). The filly's second dam, Lucky to Be Me (Bernstein), was sold to Katsumi Yoshida for $1.25 million in foal to Uncle Mo at Keeneland November in 2017 and is alread the dam of the Group 3-placed Fidele (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}).
