Impeccably Bred Justify Colt Debuts at Chukyo

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this weekend running at Chukyo Racecourse. Top-level racing makes a much-anticipated return to Japan this weekend with the running of the G1 Sprinters' S. at Nakayama, where the fairer sex looks to hold all the aces:

GOLDEN MIC (c, 2, Justify–Sambuca Classica, by Cat Thief) seeks to become the seventh winner from eight foals to the races for his dam, who accounts for GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile and Eclipse Award winner Classic Empire (Pioneerof the Nile), making a name for himself alongside this colt's freshman sire at Coolmore America. The $625,000 Keeneland September yearling is also a half-brother to SW Anytime Magic (Fusaichi Pegasus) and to MSW Uptown Twirl (Twirling Candy), whose son Presidential (Pioneerof the Nile) just missed in this year's Texas Derby. Golden Mic's yearling full-brother fetched $575,000 from Maverick Racing and Siena Farm at the just-concluded September Sale. Golden Mic has drawn widest in a field of 10 with Yasunari Iwata at the controls for Hideyuki Mori. B-CHC Inc (KY)

 

 

 

RED KHAFRA (c, 2, American Pharoah–A. P. Dream, by A. P. Indy) is out of a daughter of Kinsman Farm's MGISW Dream Supreme (Seeking the Gold), the dam of GISW sire Majestic Warrior (A. P. Indy) and his SW full-sister Crystal Current–dam of three stakes horses including GSP Crystal Glacier (Curlin)–as well as SW & GSP Evolutionist (El Prado {Ire}). Red Khafra, who was bought back on a bid of $245,000 at KEESEP last year, counts fellow GI Ballerina S. heroine Spinning Round (Dixieland Band) as his third dam. Hayato Yoshida, best known for his association with champion white filly Sodashi (Jpn), has the call from gate one. B-Kinsman Farm (KY)

KAUPILI (Frosted) is out of a winner of North Hills' Tenno Sho (Autumn) heroine Heavenly Romance (Jpn) (Sunday Silence), but may not have taken to the turf when beaten just under 10 lengths in ninth on career debut at Hanshin in June. The grey switches to the dirt for this and has a license to appreciate the change, as the filly is a half-sister to Awardee (Jungle Pocket {Jpn}), twice a winner and Group 3 level and twice Group 1-placed on the surface; five-time dirt stakes scorer Amour Briller (Smart Strike); and a close relative of G2 UAE Derby hero and GI Belmont S. placegetter Lani (Tapit). Mendelssohn Represented By First Japanese Winner

Coolmore America's Mendelssohn, a son of the much-missed sire of sires Scat Daddy, was represented by his first Japanese winner and 16th overall from his first crop when the 2-year-old filly Celadonite (Jpn) turned in a professional debut effort over 1400 meters on the dirt Saturday at Chukyo Racecourse.

Drawn widest in a field of 10 in a rare sex-restricted event for first-time starters, the early April foal jumped alertly and was part of the early mix, then eased back to sit a midfield trip in the clear while racing several paths away from the inside. Gradually working her way into contention on the turn, Celadonite was poised to strike three deep on the swing for home, accelerated nicely when asked by Christophe Lemaire with a little more than an eighth of a mile to race and stayed on well to record a 1 1/4-length victory as the 19-10 second favorite (see below, SC 10). It was the 1,600th winner on the JRA circuit for the French reinsman.

 

 

Celadonite, who races in the colors of the Silk Racing syndicate, is the third winner from four to race for his dam Celadon (Gold Halo {Jpn}), whose best produce to date is the hard-knocking Copano Kicking (Spring At Last), a three-time Group 3 winner on the dirt in Japan who added a thrilling success in the $1.5-million Riyadh Dirt Sprint in 2021. Fourth in the latter event this term, he was an intended runner in the G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen, but suffered a career-ending injury in the days leading up to the race.

Celadon was acquired by Indian interests in 2015 and was exported to that country in foal to Elusive Quality. She produced two winners from two to race in India, but was returned to the U.S. in 2019, where she was covered by Mendelssohn and subsequently sent to Japan. She was barren to Drefong for 2021 and slipped her foal by champion dirt horse Le Vent Se Leve (Jpn) this season.

Mendelssohn, the half-brother to Into Mischief and Beholder, has 12 winners stateside, including the stakes-placed Miracle. His other winners have come in France, Ireland and Saudi Arabia. He is also the sire of the juvenile colt Tomodachi, a $1.3-million purchase by Japan's joint-second leading trainer Mitsu Nakauchida at this year's OBS April Sale.

CELADONITE (JPN) (f, 2, Mendelssohn–Celadon, by Gold Halo {Jpn}) is the first Japanese-foaled produce for her well-traveled dam, whose best produce to date was the very talented Copano Kicking (Spring At Last), a three-time Group 3 winner in Japan and a veteran of three starts overseas, including a thrilling victory in the Riyadh Dirt Sprint in 2021. A sound fourth in defense of that title this past February, he was injured in the days leading up to this year's G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen and was retired. Celadon was sent to India in 2016 and produced two winners from as many foals in that country, then returned to the U.S. in 2019 where she was covered by this sire and subsequently exported to Japan. Celadonite debuts in the colors of Silk Racing and has Christophe Lemaire in the irons. B-Northern Racing

RAIJIN (JPN) (c, 2, Speightstown–Kensington, by Kitten's Joy) is the first foal from a winning daughter of Irish Group 3 winner Rum Charger (Ire) (Spectrum {Ire}), who counts four-time Grade I winner Winchester (Theatrical {Ire}) and dual Grade III winner Middleburg (Lemon Drop Kid) among her seven to taste victory at least once. Kensington was purchased for $130,000 with this foal in utero at the 2019 Keeneland November Sale, was shipped to Japan and produced this chestnut colt on St. Patrick's Day 2020. Raijin was offered at the 2021 JRHA Select Sale, where he was hammered down for the equivalent of $245,095. B-Yuki Dendo

9th-NKY, ¥30,400,000 ($213k), Allowance, 2yo, 1200mT
FROM DUSK (c, 2, Bolt d'Oro–Foolish Cause, by Giant's Causeway) may not have been at his very best over a yielding turf course on Kokura debut Sept. 3, but managed to tough it out for a 3/4-length victory (video, SC 6). The April foal, a half-brother to SW Foolish Humor (Distorted Humor), is out of a half-sister to the late MGISW Get Stormy (Stormy Atlantic) and fetched $900,000 from trainer Hideyuki Mori at this year's OBS March Sale after making $200,000 as a Keeneland September yearling last fall. Bred on the enormously successful cross of this late sire over Danehill-line mares, the May 10 foal is out of a daughter of multiple Group 3 winner Dietrich (Storm Cat), the dam of Irish champion Beauty Bright (Ire) (Danehill) and MSW/G1SP Aloft (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). PINK SOLEIL (c, 2, American Pharoah–Stoweshoe, by Flatter) is out of a dual stakes-winning full-sister to the late 'TDN Rising Star' and GISW Taris, the dam of GSW King Fury (Curlin); and out of a half to SW & MGSP Theatre Star (War Front). Pink Soleil cost trainer Hideyuki Mori $200,000 at KEESEP last fall and looks to become the 27th winner from 32 starters in Japan for his sire. Pink Soleil's Curlin half-brother is consigned by Eaton Sales as hip 461 at KEESEP next week B-Doug & Felicia Branham (KY)

ISAIAS (c, 2, California Chrome–Above Heaven, by Mr. Greeley) is out of an unraced daughter of GI Alabama S. winner Lady Joanne (Orientate), who was acquired by Dr. Masatake Iida for $320,000 at KEENOV in 2013 and was RNAd for $575,000 at Fasig-Tipton November the following fall. Lady Joanne, who was purchased by Iida for $1.6-million in foal to Tiznow at FTKNOV in 2009, is a half-sister to GI Preakness S. hero Shackleford (Forestry) and MGSWs Baghdaria (Royal Academy) and Afleeting Lady (Afleet Alex), among others. RYUNO RAFALE (JPN) (c, 2, Blame–All Flags Flying, by War Front) is the first Japanese-foaled produce for his dam, a daughter of GI E.P. Taylor S. winner Volga (Ire) (Caerleon), who was acquired by JS Company with this colt in utero for $100,000 at KEENOV in 2019. The late March foal was sent through the ring a bit more than three months after his birth, realizing a final bid of $139,807 at the JRHA Select Sale. The colt's champion third dam Verveine (Lear Fan) dropped G1 Hong Kong Vase heroine Vallee Enchantee (Fr) (Peintre Celebre). B-Tobino Bokujo
