Goldencents Colt Looks To Go One Better at Chukyo

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this Saturday running at Chukyo and Nakayama Racecourses:

Saturday, January 7, 2023
3rd-NKY, ¥11,850,000, Newcomers, 3yo, 1200m
HARDWIRED (c, 3, Hard Spun–Season Maker, by Pioneerof the Nile) is the first foal out of an unplaced daughter of the late French SW & MGSP Season's Greetings (Ire) (Ezzoud {Ire}), whose daughter Grace Hall (Empire Maker) won the 2011 GI Spinaway S. at two and the GII Delaware, Gulfstream and Indiana Oaks as a sophomore. Also the dam of a newly christened juvenile colt by Mendelssohn, Season Maker was sold in foal to Frosted for $55,000 at Keeneland November this past fall. B-Godolphin (KY)

4th-CKO, ¥11,850,000, Newcomers, 3yo, 1800m
HAKAISHIN (c, 3, Runhappy–Elarose, by Storm Cat) looks to become the fifth foal from as many to the races for his dam, a daughter of three-time Grade I winner and foundation mare Take Charge Lady (Dehere). The latter's produce include GISW sires Take Charge Indy (A.P. Indy) and champion MGISW Will Take Charge (Unbridled's Song); GISW As Time Goes By (American Pharoah); and the dams of champion Take Charge Brandi (Giant's Causeway) and MGISW Omaha Beach (War Front); and of GSW/GISP 'TDN Rising Star' Charge It (Tapit). Masatake Iida acquired Elarose for $450,000 in foal to Quality Road at KEENOV in 2018. B-Chiyoda Farm (KY)

MONTE LUNA (f, 3, Union Rags–Light the Sky, by Tapit) cost $75,000 as a KEESEP yearling and is out of a half-sister to champion and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Stevie Wonderboy (Stephen Got Even) and Theyskens' Theory (Bernardini), a Group 3 winner and placed in Group 1 company as a juvenile in England and second to Winter Memories (El Prado {Ire}) in the GI Garden City S. in 2011. B-Peter J Callahan, Runnymede Farm Inc, Enid Cafritz & Haras d'Etreham (KY)

5th-CKO, ¥10,480,000, Maiden, 3yo, 1600mT
AIR METEORA (c, 3, Goldencents–Nokaze, by Empire Maker) turned in a very promising effort on his lone racetrack appearance, making the majority of the running in an 1800-meter newcomers' event Nov. 20 only to be run down close home (see below, SC 8). This slight cutback in trip can only help the half-brother to GSW Air Almas (Majestic Warrior), SW Air Fanditha (Hat Trick {Jpn}) and the talented Air Sage (Point of Entry). Nokaze is herself a half-sister to Yuzuru (Medaglia d'Oro), the stakes-winning dam of GSW Yuugiri (Shackleford), an impressive Oaklawn allowance winner first off a near eight-month absence at Oaklawn Dec. 30. B-Sekie & Tsunebumi Yoshihara (KY)

Weep No More Filly Debuts at Nakayama

In this continuing series, Alan Carasso takes a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this weekend running at Chukyo, Nakayama and Hanshin Racecourses. Juvenile Fillies got their chance at Group 1 glory last weekend and it's the boys' turn this weekend at Hanshin, with the running of the G1 Asahi Hai Futurity:

Saturday, December 17, 2022
5th-CKO, ¥13,400,000, Newcomers, 2yo, 1800m
REGNUM (c, 2, American Pharoah–Big Meesh {Ire}, by High Chaparral {Ire}) was a $170,000 purchase out of the 2020 Keeneland November Sale and was bought back on a bid of $265,000 at KEESEP before fetching $340,000 as an OBS April breezer this past spring (:9 4/5). The colt's dam, a half-sister to MGSW turf distaffer Noble Stella (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}), was acquired by Grantley Acres with Regnum in utero for $250,000 at the 2019 KEENOV sale. B-Grantley Acres & Ryan Conner (KY)

6th-NKY, ¥13,400,000, Newcomers, 2yo, 1800m
KEEP SMILING (JPN) (f, 2, Quality Road–Weep No More, by Mineshaft) is the second foal from her dam, upset winner of the 2016 GI Ashland S. at Keeneland and who produced $400,000 KEESEP grad War Classic (War Front) before being acquired privately by Northern Farm and bred to this successful stallion prior to her export. Weep No More, a half-sister to GSW Current (Curlin) and to the dam of the SW & GSP Half Is Enough (Frosted), is also responsible for a colt by the late Duramente (Jpn) that fetched better than $735,000 as a yearling at this year's JRHA Select Sale. The filly's third dam is 2001 GI Kentucky Oaks victress Flute (Seattle Slew). B-Northern Farm

Sunday, December 18, 2022
11th-HSN, Asahi Hai Futurity-G1, ¥136m, 2yo, 1600mT
FROM DUSK (c, 2, Bolt d'Oro–Foolish Cause, by Giant's Causeway) realized a bid of $200,000 at last year's KEESEP sale before blossoming into a $900,000 OBS March juvenile. A fighting debut winner at Kokura Sept. 3, he was compromised by a slow start first time against winners Sept. 24, but made the majority of the running when last seen in the G2 Keio Hai Nisai S. over seven furlongs and was caught in the dying yards (see below, SC 7). Yutaka Take takes the ride on the colt, whose dam is a half-sister to the treble Grade I-winning turfer Get Stormy (Stormy Atlantic). B-Springhouse Farm (KY)

King Kamehameha’s Jun Light Bolt Crowned At Chukyo

In a dramatic finish to Sunday's G1 Champions Cup at Chukyo, Jun Light Bolt (Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}) collared G2 UAE Derby hero Crown Pride (Jpn) (Reach The Crown {Jpn}) by a neck just before the wire.

Sent off at 6-1 in this 1800-metre contest, the 5-year-old entire settled one off the rail in midpack as Red Soldado (Jpn) (Majestic Warrior) dashed to the front. That rival, setting an uncontested pace, got away with middling fractions on the backstretch, with the first 1000 metres covered in 1:02.40. As a result, the field was keeping closer order and racing room was at a premium as they approached the far turn.

Still on the engine 400 metres from home, Red Soldado was facing a stiff challenge from Crown Pride to his outside. Jun Light Bolt, meanwhile, was within striking distance, and was asked by pilot Yukito Ishikawa shortly after the quarter pole. Rumbling home ominously well, the dark bay set his sights on new leader Crown Pride, as 1-2 favourite T O Keynes (Jpn) (Sinister Minister) was winding up to his inside. The Yasuo Tomomichi runner hit a superior gear however, and thrust his neck in front three jumps from the line. The stalking Hapi (Jpn) (Kizuna {Jpn}) was 1 1/4 lengths back in third, another neck behind T O Keynes, who had covered extra ground in the race.

“I can't find any other word to describe this other than 'happy',” said Ishikawa, who was winning his first Group 1 race in Japan. “I tried to feel the horse's rhythm and was confident that if we can find an open space after entering the lane, he would burst out. The colt responded so well that I knew we could win. Though I have yet to feel my first Group 1 win, I would like to savor this joy from now on.”

Although a four-time winner and listed-placed over the turf, the Northern Farm-bred reinvented himself when trying the dirt for the first time in July, running second in the Listed July S. at Fukushima. He earned his first black-type score outright in the Listed BSN Sho at Niigata in August, and continued his upward trajectory with a three-quarter-length score in the G3 Sirius S. going 1900 metres over this strip on Oct. 1.

Pedigree Notes

The deceased King Kamehameha has left 94 stakes winners and 65 group winners, with Jun Light Bolt his 15th at the highest level. Four of his stakes winners are out of Special Week (Jpn) mares, including G1 Asahi Hai Tuturity S. victor Leontes (Jpn), and G3 Falcon S. scorer Tagano Grandpa (Jpn), besides Sunday's winner.

Despite never finding the winner's circle, Special Groove (Jpn) (Special Week {Jpn}) has done the job as a broodmare, with a pair of stakes winners among her quintet of scorers to show from six runners of racing age. Jun Light Bolt's year-older half brother Groove It (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa {GB}) won at Group 3 level in Japan, and his juvenile half-sister Pure Groove (Jpn) (Drefong) has plenty of time to build on her first two starts. Special Groove foaled colts by Drefong and Lord Kanaloa (Jpn) in 2021 and 2022, respectively.

Third dam Air Groove (Jpn) (Tony Bin {Ire}) was named Japanese Horse of the Year in 1997, and at stud she left fellow Japanese champion Admire Groove (Jpn) (Sunday Silence), herself the dam of Japanese Champion 3-Year-Old Colt and late sire Duramente (Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}). Another of Air Groove's progeny is Shadai stallion Rulership (Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}), who won the G1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup.

T O Keynes Stands Out in Champions Cup

Horse for the course T O Keynes (Jpn) (Sinister Minister) appears a very tough nut to crack in Sunday's G1 Champions Cup (ex Japan Cup Dirt) at Chukyo Racecourse, a race in which he bolted up by a half-dozen lengths over the classy Chuwa Wizard (Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}) twelve months ago.

The 5-year-old earned a berth in the 2022 G1 Saudi Cup with his victory here last year, but he was disappointing in eighth behind Emblem Road (Quality Road) in Riyadh back in February. He regrouped and validated odds-on favouritism in this track's G3 Heian S. in May and was fourth in the Listed Teio Sho June 29 before bouncing back to defeat this year's G2 UAE Derby hero Crown Pride (Jpn) (Reach the Crown {Jpn}) in the valuable Listed JBC Classic over the metric mile and a quarter at Morioka Nov. 3.

“He ran a strong race last year, so I'd like things to be the same this time too,” said jockey Kohei Matsuyama. “His experience overseas has helped him mature more. He took a bit of time to recover from his last race, but just recently in training he's done things in his usual way and has responded well.”

Thirteenth in the GI Kentucky Derby following his Meydan success, Crown Pride was given plenty of time to recover from his travels and resumed with a narrow loss in the Listed Nippon TV Hai at Funabashi Sept. 28. He made the running in the JBC Classic and held well, but was no match for the classy T O Keynes late and will try to even the score while backing up to 1800 metres Sunday.

Vela Azul (Jpn) (Eishin Flash {Jpn}) made a successful switch from dirt to turf to win last weekend's G1 Japan Cup and Jun Light Bolt (Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}) looks an entirely different proposition since moving from the grass to the dirt. A four-time winner and stakes-placed from 21 turf starts, the bay was runner-up in listed company in his main-track bow in July and has since won the Listed BSN Sho in July and the G3 Sirius S. over course and distance Oct. 1, defeating the 3-year-old Hapi (Jpn) (Kizuna {Jpn}) and Auvergne (Jpn) (Smart Falcon {Jpn}).
