‘Wizard’ Works His Magic in Champions Cup

Chuwa Wizard (Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}) posted a mild upset as the 12-1 fourth choice in the G1 Champions Cup at Chukyo on Sunday. The 1800-metre race was the second group win for the 5-year-old entire.

The Northern Farm-bred sat in between horses in midpack while Air Almas (Majestic Warrior) and Inti (Jpn) (Came Home) duked it out on the front end. The first 1000 metres was covered in 1:00.30. Gradually improving three deep on the bend, Chuwa Wizard was within striking distance in fifth at the quarter pole. However, he had more to give and inched up to Inti, passed that foe in deep stretch and burst away to win. Inti was relegated to third late by Gold Dream (Jpn) (Gold Allure {Jpn}), who was 2 1/2 lengths behind Chuwa Wizard. A neck separated second and third, with last year’s winner and heavy favourite Chrysoberyl (Jpn) (Gold Allure {Jpn}) only fourth another three-quarters of a length behind after stalking in third for much of the trip.

“The horse was in very good condition and felt really good,” said pilot Keita Tosaki. “With Chrysoberyl traveling in front, I was able to feel his response while marking the race favorite. As it takes time for him to accelerate, I urged him to go early and the horse responded with great strength.”

A winner at first asking in February of 2018, by the end of that season he signed off with a victory in the Listed Nagoya Grand Prix over 2500 metres that December from eight starts as a 3-year-old. At four in six starts, Chuwa Wizard took the Listed Diolite Kinen and G3 Heian S. in consecutive starts and was back in the winner’s circle two starts later in the Listed JBC Classic. He ran fourth in the 2019 edition of this race to Chrysoberyl to end his season on Dec. 1. The Listed Kawasaki Kinen went his way on Jan. 29, and he rolled a pair of threes going 2000 metres, both to Chrysoberyl, in the June 24 Listed Teio Sho in the slop and last out in the Nov. 3 Listed JBC Classic on Nov. 3. His next start is likely to be the $20-million 1800-metre Saudi Cup in February

The Florida-bred is the first foal from his dam, an unplaced half-sister to SP Lucky Peridot (Itsmyluckyday), and cost $100K at this year’s OBS March Sale after breezing an eighth of a mile in :10 flat. SKY NILE (f, 2, Pioneerof the Nile–Joyful Victory, by Tapit) is the final US-bred produce for her Grade I-winning dam, whose foal of 2017, the colt Saqqara King (American Pharoah) was stakes-placed three times in France as a juvenile. Joyful Victory was acquired privately by this breeder after being withdrawn from Fasig-Tipton November in 2017, dropped this foal and was covered by Kitten’s Joy before being exported. That produce, a colt, fetched ¥105 million ($982,202) as a yearling at this year’s JRHA Select Sale. Joyful Victory produced a colt by Daiwa Major (Jpn) this year. B-Teruya Yoshida (KY)

Pharoah Rules in Sirius S.

Café Pharoah (Jpn) (American Pharoah) dispatched his elders with deceptive ease when taking Saturday’s 1900-metre G3 Sirius S. at Chukyo. Pounded down to 70 cents on the dollar, the son of 2015 American Triple Crown winner American Pharoah was taking his second Japanese group race.

The favourite settled in midfield while Chimera Verite (Jpn) (Kizuna {Jpn}) opened up several lengths on the chasing pack. Still eighth on the far turn, Café Pharoah swung wide into the homestretch. Fanned out to the centre of the track for the stretch drive, the Koichi Nishikawa colourbearer took dead aim on Sakura Allure (Jpn) (Gold Allure {Jpn}) as Chimera Verite folded and bounded away to win by a length. Sakura Allure was 3/4 of a length to the good of Acorn (Jpn) (Furioso {Jpn}), while Danon Splendor (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}) was another 1 1/4 lengths back in fourth.

A winner of a 2-year-old newcomer affair at Nakayama last December, Café Pharoah added the Listed Hyacinth S. at Tokyo this February and the G3 Unicorn S. there in June. He lost his unbeaten record to Danon Pharoah (Jpn) (American Pharoah) when seventh in the slop at Oi in the Listed Dirt Derby on July 8 and was subsequently benched.

Café Pharoah is one of 10 black-type winners and seven at group level for his Ashford Stud-based sire. He shares his damsire More Than Ready with GII Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint and GIII Futurity S. hero Four Wheel Drive (American Pharoah). GII Mrs. Revere S. and GIII Boiling Springs S. heroine Mary’s Follies foaled a colt by Uncle Mo that later died in 2018. She has a yearling colt by Candy Ride (Arg) and a Connect colt of this year born Apr. 16. She was bred back to Curlin. The winner’s third dam was a four-time black-type winner on the Louisiana circuit.

The half-sister to champion sprinter and Japanese-based sire Drefong (Gio Ponti) was a $300K KEESEP acquisition and was successfully resold for $675K at last year’s OBS March Sale. CAFE PHAROAH (c, 3, American Pharoah–Mary’s Follies, by More Than Ready) assumed the mantle as Japan’s top 3-year-old dirt horse earlier this year with victories in the Listed Hyacinth S. in February and in the G3 Unicorn S. (see below, gate 16) in June, both at Tokyo, and with it locked up the Japan Road to the Kentucky Derby. But he stubbed his toe when a well-beaten seventh to Danon Pharaoh (Jpn) (American Pharoah) in the Listed Japan Dirt Derby in July and resumes against his elders here. A $475K graduate of last year’s OBSMAR sale, Cafe Pharoah is a half-brother to ‘TDN Rising Star’ Regal Glory (Animal Kingdom), who recently padded her resume with a win in the GIII Kentucky Downs Ladies’ Turf S.
