International Cast Nominated for DWC

Over 700 horses have been nominated for the 25th running of the Dubai World Cup night card on Mar. 27. Nineteen countries are represented among the 762 horses which resulted in 1,511 nominations.

Leading the 176 nominations for the $12-million G1 Dubai World Cup over 2000 metres on dirt is GI Pegasus World Cup hero Knicks Go (Paynter) for Brad Cox and GI Runhappy Malibu S. victor Charlatan (Speightstown) for Bob Baffert. MG1SW Code of Honor (Noble Mission {GB}) will also take part, while Godolphin fields undefeated Maxfield (Street Sense) from the barn of Brendan Walsh. Grade II winners Sleepy Eyes Todd (Paddy O'Prado) and Tax (Arch) have also signed on, as has John Gosden's Dubai Warrior (GB) (Dansili {GB}).

The 2410-metre $5-million G1 Dubai Sheema Classic received 167 nominations, led by globetrotting MG1SW Addeybb (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}) for William Haggas. Japan is sending the MG1SW and 2020 G1 Arima Kinen heroine Chrono Genesis (Jpn) (Bago {Fr}) and G1SW Glory Vase (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}). Other top-level winners on the list of nominees include Bill Mott's Channel Maker (English Channel), David Smaga's Nao Da Mais (Brz) (T. H. Approval) and Aidan O'Brien's Mogul (GB) (Galileo {Ire}).

Held over 1800 metres, the $4-million G1 Dubai Turf attracted 209 nominees led by Group 1 winner Lord North (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) for John Gosden and GI Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational S. winner Colonel Liam (Liam's Map) for Todd Pletcher. Pletcher also saddles GSW Largent (Into Mischief). G1 Queen Anne S. hero Lord Glitters (Fr) (Whipper) is also part of the field for David O'Meara.

Americans have won 13 of the 24 editions of the $1.5-million G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen, and Grade I winner C Z Rocket (City Zip) is the leading light for trainer Peter Miller of the 184 nominees. Steve Asmussen's Yaupon (Uncle Mo) has saluted at Grade II level, while 2019 Golden Shaheen runner-up Matera Sky (Speightstown) returns from the yard of Hideyuki Mori. Japan also has Yoshito Yahagi's Justin (Jpn) (Orfevre {Jpn}), while Gladiator King (Curlin) represents the locals in the 1200-metre test.

The fifth Thoroughbred Group 1 on tap for the evening is the $1-million Al Quoz Sprint, with 178 horses named as hopefuls for the six-panel turf dash. Aussie MG1SW Bivouac (Aus) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) flies the flag for Godolphin and James Cummings. Fellow Aussie Oleksandra (Aus) (Animal Kingdom) moved to the barn of American Neil Drysdale, but also is signed on, as is Roger Teal's G1 July Cup victor Oxted (GB) (Mayson {GB}) among others.

The G2 UAE Derby drew 148 prospective sophomores and Steve Asmussen's MGISW Jackie's Warrior (Maclean's Music) leads the way. Doug O'Neill sends GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile bridesmaid Hot Rod Charlie (Oxbow), and Bob Baffert's duo of GSW & GISP Spielberg (Union Rags) and recent GSW Medina Spirit (Protonico). Listed UAE 1000 Guineas heroine Soft Whisper (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) could also make some noise.

In the $750,000 G2 Godolphin Mile, Hong Kong sends Elusive State (Aus) (All American {Aus}), while MGSW Mr Freeze (To Honor and Serve) represents Dale Romans. The 237 nominations also see Fawzi Nass's Port Lions (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) set to run.

Rounding out the Throughbred races is the $750,000 G2 Dubai Gold Cup over 3200 metres on grass. The 121 nominees features G1 Melbourne Cup placegetter Prince of Arran (GB) (Shirocco {Ger}), Jamie Osborne's Mekong (GB) (Frankel {GB}), and French Group 1 winners Call the Wind (GB) (Frankel {GB}) and Subjectivist (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}), the latter for Mark Johnston.

Chrono Genesis on Time in Arima Kinen

The fans’ selection proved spot on in Sunday’s G1 Arima Kinen at Nakayama, with 3-2 favourite Chrono Genesis (Jpn) (Bago {Fr}) snapping up her third Group 1 by a neck. The field is selected by fan poll, and Sunday Racing’s mare defeated Salacia (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), with that foe a neck in front of Fierement (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), second on the morning line. MG1SW Lucky Lilac (Jpn) (Orfevre {Jpn}) ran fourth, another 2 1/2 lengths back.

Well back in midpack passing the winning post for the first time as Babbitt (Jpn) (Nakayama Festa {Jpn}) led, the grey filly started to advance during the backstretch run. Still well off the fence, Chrono Genesis continued to make inroads towards the vanguard and was within a length of new leader Fierement close home, before matching strides with that foe and asserting for a narrow victory. Salacia also showed good late dash to nip Fierement for second. In her final race, Lucky Lilac plugged on to take fourth. Blast Onepiece (Jpn) (Harbinger {GB}) went amiss on the backstretch and did not finish the race.

“All I wanted was her to be relaxed and her break wasn’t that bad, she was in hand and ran in the same rhythm as before,” said pilot Yuichi Kitamura. “Yesterday and today, I was in 2500-metre races here at Nakayama which enabled me to get warmed up with a good idea of how I wanted her to run. We haven’t faced the two Triple Crown winners yet, but I hope she performs well and stays in the spotlight next season.”

Added trainer Takashi Saito, “She was in good form and gave us a great impression before the race. I was worried that Yuichi might have made a too early bid, but he was confident and rode her beautifully, holding off the others. This is a dream come true and I have a feeling there will be many more.”

Runner-up in the 2018 G1 Hanshin Juvenile Fillies after two unbeaten runs including the Listed Ivy S., Chrono Genesis captured the G3 Daily Hai Queen Cup last term and was third in both the G1 Japanese 1000 Guineas and G1 Japanese Oaks before a win in the G1 Shuka Sho. Unplaced in her 3-year-old finale in the G1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup last November, she returned at four with a win in the G2 Kyoto Kinen and played bridesmaid in Lucky Lilac’s Osaka Hai in April. Back on top in the G1 Takarazuka Kinen on June 28, she went missing until a third in the G1 Tenno Sho (Autumn) behind Almond Eye (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}) on Nov. 1 last out.

Pedigree Notes

One of two Group 1 winners for her sire after Big Week (Jpn), the winner is among Bago’s 11 black-type winners, seven at the group level. The eighth foal and eighth winner out of the winning Chronologist, Chrono Genesis is also her dam’s second offspring to win at least two Group 1s after the grey mare Normcore (Jpn) (Harbinger {GB}). At the beginning of December, the grey Normcore padded her resume with a win at Sha Tin in the G1 Longines Hong Kong Cup after saluting in the G1 Victoria Mile earlier in her career. The duo are followed by the unplaced 3-year-old filly Clotho Nona (Jpn) (Rulership {Jpn}), an unnamed juvenile colt by Maurice (Jpn), a yearling by Drefong and a weanling filly by Maurice. Chronologist visited the court of 2017 G1 Japanese Derby/Tenno Sho (Autumn) hero Rey de Oro (Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}) this spring.

The extended family of the 2020 Arima Kinen heroine features Japanese MSW Fusaichi Airedale (Jpn) (Sunday Silence), in turn the dam of Japanese Champion 2-Year-Old Colt Fusaichi Richard (Jpn) (Kurofune), MSW Lailaps (Jpn) (French Deputy), and the G1 Hanshin Juvenile Fillies third Beach Samba (Jpn) (Kurofune). Another half-sister to Fusaichi Airedale, Bellagio (Jpn) (Mejiro Ryan {Jpn}), saluted in the Listed Topaz S., while yet another half-sister was the dam of G3 Sapporo Nisai S. victor Admire Eikan (Jpn) (Heart’s Cry {Jpn}).

Almond Eye Seeks 8th Group 1 Win in Tenno Sho

Seven-time Group 1 winner Almond Eye (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}) will attempt to add another top-level score to her already impressive record in Sunday’s 2,000-meter G1 Tenno Sho (Autumn) at Tokyo. Winner of the filly Triple Crown in 2018 before scoring in the G1 Japan Cup, the 5-year-old mare added a pair of Group 1 wins in 2019 in the Dubai Turf and last fall’s Tenno Sho, beating Danon Premium (Jpn). A lack-luster ninth in the 2,500-meter G1 Arima Kinen in December, she made a belated start to the 2020 season following the cancellation of the Dubai World Cup Carnival in March, winning the May 17 G1 Victoria Mile over 1,600 meters. In her latest start, she finished second over slightly heavy going behind Gran Alegria (Jpn) in Tokyo’s G1 Yasuda Kinen June 7.

According to trainer Sakae Kunieda, Almond Eye has had the same schedule as she did last year, getting some down time over the summer at Northern Farm Tenei in Fukushima before returning to the training center Oct. 2.

“Last week she looked a bit heavy, but her breathing wasn’t bad. Her movement was the usual,” said Kunieda. “With this field, I expect the pace to be slow, so I’m hoping she’ll leave the gate relatively well and have a smooth trip.”

Almond Eye has finished in the top three in all her seven starts at Tokyo and won five times, four of those in Group 1s. Christophe Lemaire, who has ridden all but one of the mare’s 13 career outings, is slated to ride Sunday.

Facing the mighty mare Sunday is 4-year-old filly Chrono Genesis (Jpn) (Bago {Fr}), victorious over the re-opposing Kiseki (Jpn) (Rulership {Jpn}) in the G1 Takarazuka Kinen at Hanshin June 28. Last season’s G1 Shuka Sho hero kicked off 2020 with a win over the yielding turf in the 2,200-meter G2 Kyoto Kinen in February before finishing second in the G1 Osaka Hai in April.

Also looking to add a second straight victory is Fierement (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), who successfully defended his title in the G1 Tenno Sho (Spring) last May. The three-time Group 1 winner will receive the services of Yuichi Fukunaga in this return.

‘Lilac’ Poised to Bloom in Takarazuka Kinen

Lucky Lilac (Jpn) (Orfevre {Jpn}) attempts to add a fourth career win at the highest level in Sunday’s 2,200-meter G1 Takarazuka Kinen at Hanshin Racecourse. Having proven herself consistent at a high level, Lucky Lilac, who recorded her initial Group 1 victory in the Hanshin Juvenile Fillies in 2017, won last fall’s G1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup at Kyoto in November before finishing runner-up in Sha Tin’s G1 Longines Hong Kong Vase the following month. Second behind Danon Kingly (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) in the G2 Nakayama Kinen in her seasonal return Mar. 1, the 5-year-old returned to best Danon Kingly, who finished third, in the 2000-meter G1 Osaka Hai over this course Apr. 5.

“After her last race, she went to Northern Farm Shigaraki, and although restrictions on movement meant I wasn’t able to check on her, she has come back looking really well,” said trainer Mikio Matsunaga. “Her form is good, and she has filled out in a way that really makes her look bigger and stronger.”

Mirco Demuro, who will accompany Lucky Lilac, gets the chance to win his third Group 1 title this year.

Chrono Genesis (Jpn) (Bago {Fr}) recorded her most important career win in Kyoto’s G1 Shuka Sho last October before crossing the wire fifth-behind winner Lucky Lilac-in the Queen Elizabeth II Cup. Bouncing back over a yielding turf course to take the Feb. 16 G2 Kyoto Kinen, the 4-year-old found only Lucky Lilac a neck too good in the Osaka Hai and looks to turn the tables on that rival here.

“Last time she drew a wide gate, but quickly got into a position where she settled into stride well. She finished second in the end, but showed her ability, which has definitely improved as she’s gotten older,” said trainer Takashi Saito. “She returned from the farm on June 5, and is the type to pick up quickly in training.” The Sunday Racing Co.’s runner will once again be accompanied by her regular rider, Yuichi Kitamura.

Last season’s G1 Satsuki Sho hero, Saturnalia (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}) added a win in Hanshin’s G2 Kobe Shimbun Hai later in September before finishing sixth behind winner Almond Eye (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}) in the G1 Tenno Sho (Autumn) in October. Well behind Lys Gracieux (Jpn) (Heart’s Cry {Jpn}) in the G1 Arima Kinen Dec. 22, he appreciated the time, returning a winner in the Mar. 15 Kinko Sho at Chukyo.

“He was helped last time by the lack of noise due to no spectators, and everything went smoothly before the race. He adjusted well to the slow pace, and ran out a comfortable winner,” said assistant trainer Takashi Kotaki of the 2018 G1 Hopeful S. victor. “He’s been at the farm since, but on his return to the stable, he’s been his usual self as he prepared for this race.” Jockey Christophe Lemaire returns on Saturnalia.
