Wootton Bassett’s American Flag Dominates The Fontainebleau

With Ballydoyle's Victoria Road (Ire) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}) and Juddmonte's Halfway Line (GB) (Zoffany {Ire}) missing from the line-up for Sunday's G3 Prix de Fontainebleau, Malcolm Parrish's American Flag (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}–Tres Americanqueen {Fr}, by American Post {GB}) occupied pole position for ParisLongchamp's time-honoured course-and-distance trial for the G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains and he did not disappoint with another sharp display. Gaining a following with a six-length win over a mile at Saint-Cloud in November and a smooth three-length success in the Listed Prix Omnium II over the same track and trip Mar. 18, the Yann Barberot-trained relative of the G2 Grand Prix de Deauville winner Tres Blue (Ire) (Anabaa Blue {GB}) was held up at the tail of the five-runner field early by Christophe Soumillon.

Unleashed out wide to take command a furlong from home, the 9-10 favourite was soon clear and could again coast to the line for a comfortable 2 1/2-length verdict over Marhaba Ya Sanafi (Ire) (Muhaarar {GB}) as Rajapour (Ire) (Almanzor {Fr}) surrendered his unbeaten record a short neck away in third. “It could be that I can finally train the top horse I have been dreaming of,” Barberot said. “This is why we wake up every morning. He has a lovely temperament and does everything easily and it all starts from there.”

American Flag will be one of the leading French runners in the upcoming Classics here and at Chantilly and his trainer added, “I have never pushed him hard, this was not a target and I wanted to keep something in the tank for the major races to come. First, it will be the [May 14] Poule d'Essai des Poulains and then the [June 4 Prix du] Jockey Club if he shows us that he can stay. The only answer I don't have yet is which ground he prefers. He has always run on soft or very soft, so good is a question mark.”

Pedigree Notes
American Flag, who was a €102,000 purchase at the 2021 Arqana Deauville August Sale, is out of a daughter of the dual group-placed Tres Ravi (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}) whose six black-type performers include the aforementioned Tres Blue who was also runner-up in the G1 Deutsches Derby. She also produced Tres Blue's G2 Prix de Royallieu-placed full-sister Tres Rapide (Ire), who is the second dam of the G2 Prix Eugene Adam and G3 Prix Exbury winner and G1 Prix Ganay runner-up Pretty Tiger (Ire) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) and the G3 Prix Thomas Bryon runner-up Pretty Boy (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}). Tres Americanqueen's 2-year-old colt American Thunder (Fr) is by Night Of Thunder (Ire).

Frankel Filly Excites at ParisLongchamp

As the only inexperienced member of the line-up for Sunday's G3 Prix Vanteaux, Al Shira'aa Farms' Jannah Rose (Ire) (Frankel {GB}–Sophie Germain {Ire}, by Indian Ridge {Ire}) had her work cut out but after her command performance in ParisLongchamp's Classic pointer all were left pondering where her considerable talent will take her. Off the mark in professional if not flashy fashion over a mile at Chantilly in September, the Carlos Laffon-Parias-trained half-sister to the G2 Lanwades Stud S. winner Creggs Pipes (Ire) (Rip Van Winkle {Ire}) was nevertheless not missed in the market as the 5-2 second favourite for the nine-furlong test. Racing under early restraint early from Christophe Soumillon with one behind, the bay who was a €650,000 Goffs Orby purchase made her move wide in early straight and struck the front 300 metres out en route to a comfortable 1 3/4-length success from Sea The Lady (Fr) (Sea The Moon {Ger}).

“She is a very nice filly and considering what she does in the mornings, it was not a problem for me to run her in this group race on only her second career start,” Laffon Parias explained. “She has the speed for a race like the [G3] Prix de la Grotte next week, but I made the choice of this one thinking that it would be easier. She settled well in a race with a good rhythm and showed us all her quality in the straight. Now it looks like the [G1 Prix] Saint Alary and the [G1 Prix de] Diane, but an alternative is the [G1] Poule d'Essai [des Pouliches] and the Diane.”

Pedigree Notes
Jannah Rose, who becomes the 78th group winner for her sire, is out of the unraced Sophie Germain whose aforementioned daughter Creggs Pipes improved beyond all recognition from three to five years of age and also captured the Listed Cairn Rouge S. as well as placing in the G3 Fairy Bridge S. and G3 Blue Wind S. Also responsible for the listed-placed Silver Spear (Ire) (Clodovil {Ire}), Sophie Germain is a daughter of the G1 Oaks d'Italia heroine Hydrion (Critique) from the family of the GI Breeders' Futurity hero and G1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile runner-up Square Eddie (Smart Strike) and the GI Personal Ensign H. heroine Pompeii (Broad Brush). Next up from the dam is a 2-year-old filly by Invincible Spirit (Ire) who was bought by David Redvers for €280,000 at the most recent Goffs Orby.

Lope De Vega Filly On The Classic Trail

Into black-type company on her second start after a winning debut over 7 1/2 furlongs at Saint-Cloud in October, Peter Savill's Autumn Starlight (GB) (Lope De Vega {Ire}–Falling Leaves {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}) emerged from Saturday's Listed Prix la Camargo at that venue with her perfect record maintained and reputation enhanced. Tracking the early leader Heavenly Breath (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}) in third under Christophe Soumillon, the 14-5 second favourite looked to have it to do a furlong from home as that 8-5 market-leader who had run second to Blue Rose Cen (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}) in the G3 Prix d'Aumale gained what appeared to be a decisive advantage. Finding a late surge, the €150,000 Arqana Deauville August graduate overhauled the English raider in the final stride for a nose verdict to provide her jockey with a third black-type win on the card.

“This race was not a target, just a reintroduction and we hoped that she would run well,” trainer Stephane Wattel said. “We didn't expect to see her win, so that is probably a very good sign. She has done well physically during the winter and will come on for that. We will see about her next start, but it is not hard to imagine that it could be the [G3] Prix de la Grotte.”

Autumn Starlight is the second foal and first runner for the dam, a daughter of the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas and G1 Moyglare Stud S. heroine Again whose 2-year-old son of Kingman (GB) was a €260,000 purchase by Paul Nataf at the Arqana Deauville August Yearling Sale. Again was responsible for a trio of Galileo black-type performers in the G1 British Champions Fillies & Mares S. and G1 Prix de Royallieu runner-up Delphinia (Ire), the Listed El Gran Senor S.-winning sire Indian Maharaja (Ire) and Delano Roosevelt (Ire) who was placed in four group races. The third dam Cumbres is kin to the mighty Montjeu (Ire) linked to top-level scorers and sires Aclaim (Ire) and Galileo Gold (GB).

Wootton Bassett Colt Looks Classic Material

Having wowed with a six-length win over a mile at Saint-Cloud in November, Malcolm Parrish's exciting colt American Flag (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}–Tres Americanqueen {Fr}, by American Post {GB}) returned to the same course and distance on Saturday to put his name among the 2023 Classic hopefuls with an impressive success in the Listed Prix Omnium II. Held up initially by Christophe Soumillon, the Yann Barberot-trained relative of the G2 Grand Prix de Deauville winner Tres Blue (Ire) (Anabaa Blue {GB}) was cajoled forward nearing the end of the back straight. Seizing the advantage passing the two-furlong pole, the even-money favourite was soon clear and was eased late on to register a three-length verdict over Kendly (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}).

“Last year after his win over the course and distance he showed us that he could be a horse with a great potential,” the trainer said of the €102,000 purchase at the 2021 Arqana Deauville August Sale. “He confirmed that today, even though he was not fully fit having only had an easy piece of work on the grass last Tuesday. That opens up possibilities, but so far he has only raced on soft ground and I don't know how he will do over good or faster. The [G3] Prix de Fontainebleau is an option, but we won't commit at this stage.”

The dam is a daughter of the dual group-placed Tres Ravi (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}), whose six black-type performers include the G2 Grand Prix de Deauville winner and G1 Deutsches Derby runner-up Tres Blue (Ire) (Anabaa Blue {GB}) and the multiple group-winning sire Tres Rock Danon (Fr) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}). Another of her progeny, Anabaa Blue's G2 Prix de Royallieu runner-up Tres Rapide (Ire), is the second dam of Pretty Tiger (Ire) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) who excelled here when capturing the G2 Prix Eugene Adam and G3 Prix Exbury and was second in the G1 Prix Ganay and Pretty Boy (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}) who was second in this venue's G3 Prix Thomas Bryon. Tres Americanqueen's 2-year-old colt American Thunder (Fr) is by Night Of Thunder (Ire).
