Feed the Flame to be Supplemented to Prix du Jockey Club

Undefeated Feed the Flame (GB) (Kingman {GB}) will be supplemented to the June 4 G1 Prix du Jockey Club, confirmed racing manager Gerard Larrieu, who purchased the colt for €270,000 at Arqana August on behalf of Jean-Louis Bouchard.

Named a TDN Rising Star following an eye-catching 5 1/2-length victory going 10 1/2 furlongs at ParisLongchamp on Apr. 9, the Pascal Bary trainee returned to make it two straight with a victory at that same venue on Apr. 27.

Christophe Soumillon, who was aboard for both of the colt's prior wins, is slated to ride in the French Classic.

“The foal turned out to be very late [Apr. 4] but Pascal Bary has always loved him,” Larrieu told Jour de Galop. “He thought he would run as [a] 2-year-old, then he grew a lot and we gave him time. We didn't consider him for the Classics because we thought, at the time of registration, that it would happen too quickly. But he has developed very well in a short time. It's rare to see a foal able to change so quickly. Feed the Flame is still very immature and he will face the Jockey Club with several questions. We don't know what he has beaten. But the visual impressions [of his prior races] were magnificent. They can be subjective but his [limited body of] work has been excellent. We don't know what it's worth, so his limits are unknown.”

Hoping that history will repeat itself, Larrieu recalled another late foal that took the G1 Prix de Diane in June following only two prior starts.

“And if the Jockey Club becomes a kind of preparatory to the [G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe] as was the case for Treve (Fr) [Motivator (GB)], that's fine with me!”

Frankel’s Jannah Rose Takes The Saint-Alary

Sent off the 8-5 favourite for a competitive renewal of ParisLongchamp's G1 St Mark's Basilica Coolmore Prix Saint-Alary, Al Shira'aa Farms' Carlos Laffon-Parias-trained Jannah Rose (Ire) (Frankel {GB}–Sophie Germain {Ire}, by Indian Ridge {Ire}) duly affirmed her abundant quality with a success that was as smooth as it gets in these demanding conditions. Switched off early by Christophe Soumillon, the unbeaten G3 Prix Vanteaux winner was coaxed to the front 300 metres from the line and asserted for a 3/4-of-a-length verdict over Elusive Princess (Fr) (Martinborough {Jpn}), who in turn avenged her G3 Prix Cleopatre defeat by Crown Princesse (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}) by a short head.

“She is a top filly,” trainer Carlos Laffon Parias said of the €650,000 Goffs Orby purchase. “To win that group 3 last time out on only her second start was already an accomplishment and I knew she would have no problem staying an extra furlong. She looked the winner two out and I had some thoughts earlier in the week to run her in the Pouliches, but this race looked weaker and obviously the winner of the Guineas is a very good one. If the Guineas winner runs in the Diane, we will meet her there and it will be a sensational Classic. She is learning and is more relaxed–she is gaining experience and this will only make her stronger.”

Pedigree Notes
Jannah Rose is a half-sister to the G2 Lanwades Stud S. winner Creggs Pipes (Ire) (Rip Van Winkle {Ire}) out of the unraced Sophie Germain, who is also responsible for the listed-placed Silver Spear (Ire) (Clodovil {Ire}). A daughter of the G1 Oaks d'Italia heroine Hydrion (Critique) from the family of the GI Breeders' Futurity hero and G1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile runner-up Square Eddie (Smart Strike) and the GI Personal Ensign H. heroine Pompeii (Broad Brush), she also has a 2-year-old filly by Invincible Spirit (Ire) who was bought by David Redvers for €280,000 at last year's Goffs Orby.

Lope De Vega Colt Earns TDN Rising Star in Chantilly Debut

Philippe Allaire's Beauvatier (Fr) (Lope De Vega {Ire}–Enchanting Skies {Ire}, by Sea The Stars {Ire}) landed  Tuesday's €50,000 Prix du Coq Chantant at Chantilly, the latest in France Galop's series of premium races for unraced 2-year-olds, earning in the process a 'TDN Rising Star' badge after posting an impressive 5 1/2-length triumph in the five-furlong dash.

Beauvatier broke from the outside stall and raced in rear while working his way across to the stands' side rail. Making smooth headway from halfway, the 23-10 second favourite cruised to the front on the bridle approaching the furlong marker and quickened again when changing leads inside the final 100 metres, surging clear in eyecatching fashion to mark his debut with a daylight success from Kumite (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}).

“He had not worked a lot before that, but he showed speed and a good attitude in his only serious piece of work so I decided to supplement him for this,” explained trainer Yann Barberot. “Obviously, he has the ability to handle testing ground and we will see how much he improves before deciding on his next race. He has the pedigree to stay further so there is no hurry.”

The February-foaled dark bay becomes the 12th Rising Star for his sire, whose list includes GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf and GI Just A Game heroine Newspaperofrecord (Ire), National Stud resident Lope Y Fernandez (Ire), who placed five times at the highest level, and another GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf victrix in Aunt Pearl (Ire).

Allaire's wife Gitte spoke to TDN Europe on Tuesday, where she revealed that Christophe Soumillon called the couple after the race to compliment them on their bright prospect.

She said, “We are very excited about him. We bought him at the Arqana August Sale with Yann Barberot and he looked to be a very nice prospect. Yann picks out several horses for us at the sales to look at and we are happy to have found this one with him.

“Of course, it is always very exciting to start a young horse after you invest and it's already been a nice return on investment for him after winning a race like that on debut.”

Allaire added, “He has a good pedigree and there was a lot to like about him at the sales. He has good conformation, is a great walker and was very powerful even as a yearling. Lope De Vega is an elite stallion and is very sought after.

“It is the first time that Christophe Soumillon has called us after the race. He was so happy. I think that is a good sign. We have a saying in France that we are floating on a small cloud. We are enjoying the dream with this horse. It's so nice to dream.”

Pedigree Notes

Beauvatier, a €160,000 Arqana August purchase and kin to a yearling filly by Siyouni {Fr}), is the first of two foals produced by Listed Prix de Thiberville runner-up Enchanting Skies (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), herself a sale-topping €500,000 Baden-Baden September yearling when sold by Ronald Rauscher to Peter and Ross Doyle, on behalf of Mayfair Speculators, in 2016. His dam is one of four black-type performers out of Listed Kolner Fruhjahrs-Stuten-Preis third Estefania (Ger) (Acatenango {Ger}), the quartet headed by G1 Preis von Europa victor Empoli (Ger) (Halling). Estefania is out of a multiple-winning half to MG1SW G2 German 1000 Guineas and G2 Preis der Diana (German Oaks) heroine Elle Danzig (Ger) (Roi Danzig).

Saxon Warrior’s Greenland Prevails In Greffulhe Thriller

Aidan O'Brien trainee Greenland (Ire) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}–Aktoria {Fr}, by Canford Cliffs {Ire}) lined up for Monday's G3 Prix Greffulhe coming back off a third in last month's G3 Prix La Force at ParisLongchamp and dipped into deep reserves to prevail in a thrilling finish to the 10 1/2-furlong test. He had concluded a five-race juvenile campaign with a fourth in Newmarket's Sept. 24 G2 Royal Lodge S. in his penultimate start and stalked the pace in second for the most part. Readied for his challenge passing the quarter-mile marker, he joined long-time leader Harry Way (Fr) (Galiway {GB}) approaching the final furlong and was driven out to deny that tenacious opponent by a nose in a nip-and-tuck tussle.

“He is a physically imposing colt who, gave me a great feeling going to post on the dirt surface,” said winning rider Christophe Soumillon. “It wasn't easy on that very soft ground today, which is why I didn't want to come too late and I anticipated the move early in the straight. He will come on for that and no doubt that he will be among the favourites for the [G1 Prix du] Jockey Club.” Coolmore representative Hermine Bastide added, “We are very happy to win as it is quite important for Saxon Warrior. Soft ground is not what he prefers and, all being well, he will come back to France for the Prix du Jockey Club.”

Pedigree Notes
Greenland, who becomes the fourth pattern-race winner for his second-crop sire, is the third of five foals and one of two scorers for Listed Prix Six Perfections victrix Aktoria (Fr) (Canford Cliffs {Ire}). Aktoria is kin to G3 Prix d'Arenberg third Galaktea (Ire) (Statue of Liberty), the dual stakes-placed Now You're Talking (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) and to the dam of stakes-winning GII Santa Ana S. placegetter Sweet Charity (Fr) (Myboycharlie {Ire}). Greenland's stakes-winning third dam Epagris (GB) (Zalazl), who also ran second in the G3 Nell Gwyn S., is the leading performer for Trikymia (Final Straw {GB}) and thus hails from the family of G1 Irish Derby-winning sire Tyrnavos (GB) (Blakeney {GB}), G1 Dewhurst S. hero Tromos (GB) (Busted {GB}) and G1 Middle Park S. victor Tachypous (GB) (Hotfoot {GB}). Aktoria also has the unraced 2-year-old colt Benimaru (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}) and a yearling colt by Starspangledbanner (Aus) to come.
