Quick Suzy Goes For Prix Morny, BC Juvenile Turf Sprint Berth Sunday

Royal Ascot winner Quick Suzy (IRE) is set to take on 13 rivals in the 6-furlong Group 1 Darley Prix Morny at Deauville on Sunday. The Darley Prix Morny winner will receive an automatic berth into the $1 million Grade 2 Juvenile Turf Sprint through the international Breeders' Cup Challenge Series.

The Breeders' Cup Challenge Series is an international series of 84 stakes races whose winners receive automatic starting positions and fees paid into a corresponding race of the Breeders' Cup World Championships, which will be held at Del Mar racetrack in Del Mar, California, on Nov. 5-6.

Owned by the Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, Quick Suzy blitzed her rivals in the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes at Ascot on June 16 and will be looking to emulate Campanelle (IRE) by completing the Queen Mary-Prix Morny double, which Lady Aurelia also achieved in 2016.

Quick Suzy is trained by Gavin Cromwell in Navan, Ireland. Cromwell commented, “Quick Suzy goes for the Prix Morny. She was entered in the Phoenix Stakes (G1) at the Curragh last week, but we gave her a break after Ascot and the race just came too soon after that break. Fillies have a very good record in the Prix Morny and, on top of that, Queen Mary winners have a great record in it too, so it looks the right race for her. It fits perfectly into her schedule too. Gary Carroll will ride and we're really looking forward to the race. She's in great form.”

The Richard Hannon-trained and Al Shaqab Racing-owned Armor (GB) won the Group 3 Markel Molecomb Stakes at Goodwood by 3 ¼ lengths and steps up to Group 1 company for the first time. The son of No Nay Never will be ridden by Patrick Dobbs.

The unbeaten Velocidad (GB) took out the Group 2 Airlie Stud Stakes at the Curragh on his second start. Trained by Joseph O'Brien, the 2-year-old son of Gleneagles (IRE) will be ridden by Ryan Moore for the first time.

Asymmetric (IRE) is another Group 2 winner in the field. The son of Showcasing (GB) built on his second-place finish in the Group 2 Tattersalls July Stakes at Newmarket to win the Group 2 Unibet Richmond Stakes in his latest start. Runner-up that day at Goodwood in the Unibet Richmond Stakes was Khunan (GB). The son of Twilight Son (GB) is one of two runners in the race for trainer Richard Fahey, who also saddles Group 2 Norfolk Stakes winner Perfect Power (IRE). Hollie Doyle and Christophe Soumillon are booked to ride, respectively.

The French challenge is headed by the Andre Fabre-trained Trident (FR). Impressive on debut, Trident was narrowly beaten in the Group 3 Darley Prix de Cabourg over course and distance. He will be partnered with Mickael Barzalona.

As a part of the benefits of the Challenge series, the Breeders' Cup will pay the entry fees for the winner of the Darley Prix Morny to start in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint, which will be run at five furlongs over the Del Mar turf course. Breeders' Cup also will provide a travel allowance of $40,000 for all starters based outside of North America to compete in the World Championships. The Challenge winner must be nominated to the Breeders' Cup program by the Championships' pre-entry deadline of Oct. 25 to receive the rewards.

Adaay’s Have A Good Day Strikes For Cabourg Triumph

Theresa Marnane's 2-year-old filly Have A Good Day (Ire) (Adaay {Ire}) went postward for Tuesday's G3 Darley Prix de Cabourg at Deauville returning off a fifth to the reopposing Dizzy Bizu (Ire) (Caravaggio) in Chantilly's June 6 Listed Prix La Fleche and exacted revenge on that rival as fillies dominated the six-furlong test. The February-foaled bay had opened up with five-furlong wins at Chantilly and Lyon-Parilly in April before slipping to second when upped to six furlongs for a May 28 conditions heat at Angers in her penultimate start. Have A Good Day was alert from the gates and raced in a handy third through the early fractions. Inching closer once past halfway, the 19-1 chance was rowed along passing the quarter-mile marker and ridden out once making her challenge at the eighth pole to withstand the late surge of Dizzy Bizu by a half length for a first stakes rosette. Coolmore and Westerberg's hitherto undefeated Trident (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) held every chance in the closing stages and was collared for second by a short head on the line.

“This is my first Group 3 win and I am thrilled,” proclaimed trainer Florian Guyader. “She had a problem with her mouth after being struck in her box and was not at her best last time out. We gave her plenty of time and she gave us the right signs recently. We looked at all possible races and decided with her owner to go for this one. Let's see how she comes out of this before commiting to a race. The [Aug. 22 G1 Darley] Prix Morny [over this course and distance] is a possibility.”

Winning rider Christophe Soumillon added, “The trainer seemed very confident beforehand and I had a great trip throughout. We didn't go very fast early, but I had a good position and timed my move on the horse [Trident] of [Mickael] Barzalona on the outside. She seemed to idle a bit in front, but we were clear enough to resist the late finish of the second.”

Have A Good Day, half to a yearling colt by Gustav Klimt (Ire), is the sixth of seven foals and one of two scorers produced by a half-sister to Listed Prix Djebel third Indigo Blue (Fr) (Night Shift) and G3 Concorde S. runner-up Hasanat (GB) (Night Shift), herself the dam of G3 Killavullan S. third Takrice (GB) (Cadeaux Genereux {GB}). Descendants of her third dam Mariakova (The Minstrel), herself full to the GSW dam of sires Zafonic (Gone West) and Zamindar (Gone West), are headed by G1 King's Stand S. hero Prohibit (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}).

Rio de la Plata’s Tahlie Hangs On In The Sandringham

Sent to Sunday's G2 Prix de Sandringham at Chantilly having won the Listed Prix des Lilas over the same course and mile trip May 11, Ecurie Jean-Louis Bouchard and Gerard Augustin-Normand's Tahlie (Fr) (Rio de la Plata) proved up to the task to prevail in a tussle with Kennella (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}). Settled behind the front trio early by Christophe Soumillon, the 13-10 favourite who had the subsequent G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches heroine Coeursamba (Fr) (The Wow Signal {Ire}) back in third when winning a conditions event over this trip at ParisLongchamp Apr. 22 was committed approaching the final 300 metres. Gaining the advantage soon after, the bay held on by a head from the Pouliches third before surviving an enquiry. “She's a tough filly who is still improving,” trainer Pascal Bary said. “I know she beat the Pouliches winner before, but I have no regrets that we passed on that race as it was coming too soon for her and this was the perfect path. We will give her a short break now and aim her at the [G1 Prix] Rothschild [at Deauville Aug. 3].”

Tahlie, who has come a long way since her sixth in the G3 Prix Miesque over seven furlongs here in October, is the last known foal and one of four stakes performers out of the Listed Prix Coronation winner Tianshan (Fr) (Lahint). They include her full-sister Thais (Fr), who also took the Prix des Lilas before finishing third in the GI Beverly D. S. and GI Flower Bowl S. Tianshan, who also produced the G3 Prix des Reservoirs and G3 Prix de Lieurey winner Trixia (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}), hails from the family of the GII Fayette S. winner The Player (Street Hero) and the five-times graded-stakes winner Megan's Bluff (Pine Bluff), who was in turn responsible for the GIII Pilgrim S.-winning sire Elusive Bluff (Elusive Quality).

Wootton Bassett’s Incarville Wins Saint-Alary Thriller

Monday's G1 Saxon Warrior Coolmore Prix Saint-Alary had a wide-open feel beforehand and that was reflected in the finish with less than a length separating the first four home in the ParisLongchamp feature. In the event, it was Gerard Augustin-Normand's Incarville (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) who prevailed in a three-way photo with Cirona (GB) (Maxios {GB}) and Es La Vida (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}) as TDN Rising Star Sibila Spain (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) was a close-up fourth and possibly unlucky. Runner-up in the 10 1/2-furlong G3 Prix Cleopatre at Saint-Cloud at the beginning of May, Incarville was held up in rear early by Christophe Soumillon along with Sibila Spain but whereas she had room for a clear run down the outside at the top of the straight her previously-unbeaten peer was shut in for crucial moments there. Eating into the long-time leader Cirona's advantage with every stride, the winner who returned at 10-1 was able to overhaul her in the final stride. At the line, a head separated Incarville and the G3 Prix de la Grotte scorer Cirona, with the 35-1 shot Es La Vida the same margin behind in third and Sibila Spain only a half-length further away having finished off strongly when granted sufficient racing space.

“I'm so happy, it's been a long time since I won a group 1 and I want to thank Gerard Augustin-Normand for his support as he bought some of the horses in my yard to help me,” trainer David Smaga explained. “Besides her first run when she was unplaced, this filly has never run a bad race and definitely has a preference for soft ground–there is no doubt about that. She has also improved with every run this season and is versatile regarding tactics. Christophe Soumillon gave her a great ride and we will be back in four weeks' time for the [G1 Prix de] Diane [at Chantilly].”

Launched in the hot 7 1/2-furlong Deauville August debutantes contest won by Juddmonte's Petricor (GB) (Frankel {GB}), Incarville was 25-1 and did nothing to show those odds as unrealistic as she beat only one of her 10 rivals with that ironically being the smart Sweet Lady (Fr) (Lope de Vega {Ire}). Later that month, the grey went under to Anasia (GB) (Intello {Ger}) when runner-up over a mile at the same meeting and was not seen until winning by four lengths over that trip on heavy ground at Compiegne at the beginning of October. Four weeks later, she came to this venue to add to her tally over nine furlongs again on a heavy surface and returned from her winter break to be second to Philomene (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in Saint-Cloud's G3 Prix Penelope Apr. 6. Back over the same course and distance for the Cleopatre, she was no match for Harajuku (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) there but found testing conditions much more in her favour to turn things around.

For Cirona's trainer Christophe Ferland, the decision to head to this race was vindicated. “I passed on the Pouliches as I was convinced she would stay this trip and left it to my jockey to ride her as he wished,” he said. “Nobody wanted the lead and she didn't go that fast in front, but it took her a little while to find her best stride. I'm absolutely delighted with the performance and she ran a blinder, so we'll be heading for the Diane now.” Christopher Head was left ruing the fortune of Sibila Spain and said, “Anyone can see she was so unlucky, but I didn't want her to go to the front as she had on her last two runs as I know she can be placed anywhere in a race. Today proved she has the quality to compete at this level and there is the Diane to come, but before we consider that I have to see how she comes out of the race and talk to the owner and see if he wants to supplement again.”

Incarville is the last known foal out of Ilhabela (Ire) (Azamour {Ire}), a 12-furlong Deauville winner who David Smaga bought for €170,000 at the 2009 Arqana August Sale. Her dam Vadsa Honor (Fr) (Highest Honor {Fr}) was the winner of the Listed Prix de Thiberville before producing the classy Vahorimix (Fr) (Linamix {Fr}) who held the unusual distinction of being awarded both the G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains and G1 Prix Jacques le Marois in the stewards' room. Vadsa Honor, who is also the second dam of the G1 Irish St Leger heroine Voleuse de Coeurs (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}), was a half-sister to the listed-placed Vadlava (Fr) (Bikala {Ire}) whose four black-type winners are headed by the GI Breeders' Cup Mile-winning sire Val Royal (Fr) (Royal Academy) and also include the Listed Prix de Lieurey winner Vadlamixa (Fr) (Linamix {Fr}).

Vadlamixa is in turn the dam of the G1 Queen Anne S. and G1 Prix d'Ispahan hero Valixir (Ire) (Trempolino) and is the second dam of the G1 Prix du Mouin de Longchamp-winning sire Vadamos (Fr) (Monsun {Ger}). Her daughter Vadaza (Fr) (Zafonic) was responsible for two winner of this prize in Vadawina (Ire) (Unfuwain) in 2005 and Vazira (Fr) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) in 2014, while her half-sister Vadlawysa (Ire) (Always Fair) produced the Listed Prix Imprudence winner Valima (Fr) (Linamix {Fr}) who is in turn the dam of the G1 Prix de Diane heroine Valyra (GB) (Azamour {Ire}).
