Malibu Moon Filly Always in Command at Big A; Earns Rising Stardom

Cheyenne Stables LLC’s Harper’s in Charge (Malibu Moon) ran to advanced billing to post an extremely easy debut victory worthy of the ‘TDN Rising Star’ distinction. Pounded all the way down to 7-5 off an 8-1 morning line, the $220,000 KEESEP yearling zipped out of the gate and was immediately a length in front. She cruised along through splits of 22.83 and :46.84, and continued into the lane in complete command as Manny Franco peeked back for competition. Nobody could run with the leader, and she hit another gear for good measure in midstretch while running up the score to 6 1/2 lengths. Chad Brown/Klaravich firster Commandandcontrol (Quality Road) was second best.

The winner’s unraced dam Azara (More Than Ready) is a half-sister to superstar Tepin (Bernstein) and MGSW Vyjack (Into Mischief). She sold for $875,000 in foal to Into Mischief at KEENOV ’16. The resulting foal, I’ll Fight Dempsey, was a $300,000 yearling and debut winner at Gulfstream in February. Azara produced a Flatter colt earlier this term before being bred back to Into Mischief.

Big Finish Nets Article Schiller Triumph For Therapist

Oak Bluff Stables' Therapist sat well off the pace and displayed a devastating turn-of-foot down the lane to secure a neck win in scoring his eighth stakes victory in Saturday's sixth running of the $100,000 Artie Schiller going one mile over the good inner turf at Aqueduct Racetrack in Ozone Park, N.Y.

Never worse than fourth in his last dozen starts, the New York-bred 5-year-old son of Freud notched his sixth stakes win against open company, scoring at such caliber in each of his years in training, dating back to his 2-year-old year in 2017, where he won the Laurel Futurity at Laurel Park and the Awad at Belmont Park.

In the money in all five of his starts this season, Therapist arrived at the Artie Schiller off a runner-up effort to graded stakes winner Somelikeithotbrown in the Mohawk on Oct. 24, part of Empire Showcase Day at Belmont Park.

Breaking from post 8 under Hall of Fame jockey Javier Castellano, Therapist was angled to the two-path at the back of the pack as New York-bred multiple restricted stakes winner Rinaldi led the field into the first turn through an opening quarter-mile in 24.43 seconds and the half in 48.50, with Grade 1-winner Valid Point tracking in second.

Castellano nudged his charge around the far turn racing five lengths behind Rinaldi, who maintained his advantage as the field hit the top of the stretch. Castellano angled Therapist four wide and found a seam in between runners and began making up significant ground. Rinaldi was then confronted by Chad Brown trainees Valid Point and Delaware in the final sixteenth, but Therapist's turn of foot was too good for them as he was first on the wire in the nick of time, stopping the clock in 1:37.16. Valid Point finished second, a head in front of Delaware.

Rounding out the field were Rinaldi, Clear Vision, Ninety One Assault, Hawkish and Ballagh Rocks.

Hembree and main track only entrants Backsideofthemoon, Sea Foam, Chilly In Charge and Compound It were scratched.

Returning $8.30 as the lukewarm favorite, Therapist upped his lifetime earnings to $653,345 through a record of 21-9-2-5, having won at five different tracks.

Trainer Christophe Clement, who also bred Therapist in partnership with the owner, expressed a strong sense of pride in conditioning such a consistent state-bred.

“He's the perfect advertisement for the New York bred program; he's very consistent and can win at a high level against open company,” Clement said. “I think he's a very honest horse. He's a lovely horse and I'm lucky to train him. I'm the co-breeder, alongside the owner, Mr. Richard Leahy [of Oak Bluff Sables].”

Castellano climbed aboard Therapist for the first time on Saturday afternoon, but said that he had been observing the horse from afar.

“I've been watching this horse and following his races,” Castellano said. “He's the type of horse that likes to come from behind and can't be too close to the pace or he'll hang. Today, it worked out perfect. I had an outside post and saved all the ground and he finished really strong. I like the way he finished today.”

Patience was key for Castellano, who said the strategy was to save ground and roll home late.

“This time, I took my time,” Castellano said. “A few horses had the speed, so I had to do the best I could to save ground on the first turn. Even out of the last turn, I was feeling really good and was watching [and waiting] for the hole. It paid off.”

Clement did not rule out one more 2020 start for Therapist.

“Therapist has been very good to us over the years. He might go for one more race this year or he could wait until next year,” Clement said. “I haven't decided yet, but we'll see how he comes out of the race.”

Live racing resumes on Sunday at the Big A with a 10-race card highlighted by the $100,000 Winter Memories for 3-year-old fillies in Race 9 at 3:47 p.m. Eastern and the $100,00 Key Cents for New York-bred juvenile fillies going six furlongs in Race 2 at 12:22 p.m. First post is 11:50 a.m.

Clement, Hoping For First Breeders’ Cup Win, Works Pair For Future Stars Friday Races

Trainer Christophe Clement sent out a pair of Breeders' Cup probables to the main track at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y., early Sunday, with Plum Ali [Juveniles Fillies Turf] breezing three-eighths in 36.11 and Momos [Juvenile Turf Sprint] clocked in 35.20 over a Big Sandy track labeled fast.

Clement said he was pleased with both efforts before the pair ship to Lexington, Ky., for the Breeders' Cup Future Stars Friday at Keeneland. Plum Ali galloped out in 48.37 while Momos went in 49.22, according to DRF.

“They had an easy work on dirt and looked great,” Clement said. “I'm very happy with the two of them. They came back in good shape. Now, it's just about keeping them happy as they ship off to Kentucky tomorrow, and we'll go from there.”

The duo will look to give Clement his first career Breeders' Cup win after a slew of close calls, with the conditioner saddling six runners-up, six third-place finishes and eight fourth-place efforts in 38 previous starts entering this year's World Championships from November 6-7.

Owned by Michael Dubb, Madaket Stables and Bethlehem Stables, Plum Ali will put her 3-for-3 record on the line in the $1 million contest going one mile. The First Samurai filly made a successful debut on July 23 at Saratoga, posting a come-from-behind two-length victory going 1 1/16 miles. Cut back to the Juvenile Fillies Turf distance in her stakes debut, she again tracked the early speed before showing great closing speed, powering home a 2 ¾-length victor in the Mint Juvenile Fillies on September 7 at Kentucky Downs.

Stepping up to graded stakes company, Plum Ali improved her Beyer Speed Figure for a third consecutive race, netting an 82 for her 2 1/4-length win in the 1 1/16-mile Grade 2 Miss Grillo on October 4 over firm Belmont turf.

Momos, owned by Ironhorse Racing Stable and Secure Investments, also posted a debut win at the Spa, winning by 6 ½ furlongs over the main track on July 18. The son of Distorted Humor stayed on the same surface for a third-place finish in the Grade 2 Saratoga Special on August 7 before making his turf debut last out with a third-place effort – one length behind winner Second of July – in the Grade 3 Futurity going six furlongs on October 11 at Belmont.

Decorated Invader Turns Back for Hill Prince

West Point Thoroughbreds, William Sandbrook, William Freeman and Cheryl Manning’s Decorated Invader (Declaration of War), a close fifth as the 4-5 favorite in the 1 3/16-mile Saratoga Derby last time Aug. 15, resurfaces in Sunday’s GII Hill Prince S. at Belmont Park.

Last term’s GI Summer S. winner and unlucky GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf fourth-place finisher kicked off his sophomore campaign with three straight ultra-impressive victories, including Belmont’s GII Pennine Ridge S. at this same one-mile distance June 20 and Saratoga’s GII National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame S. July 18.

“He didn’t run great going a mile and three sixteenths, but he only got beat three quarters of a length,” West Point’s Terry Finley said. “He’s getting a bit of a breather here. He’s been at it once a month pretty much since the end of March when he made his 3-year-old debut and [trainer] Christophe [Clement] and his staff have done a great job with the horse.”

Decorated Invader is the even-money morning-line favorite for the Hill Prince.

The speedy Get Smokin (Get Stormy) figures to be on the engine once again from his rail draw. He was a good second after opening a lengthy early lead in the Hall of Fame, and most recently tired to eighth after setting the pace in the Saratoga Derby.

Buy Land and See (Cairo Prince), last fall’s Awad S. winner over this same course and distance, enters off a third-place finish going 5 1/2 furlongs in Saratoga’s Mahony S. Aug. 26.
