Verry Elleegant Retired As European Chapter Comes To A Close

Verry Elleegant (NZ) (Zed {NZ}–Opulence {NZ}, by Danroad {Aus}), the darling of Australian racing with 11 top-flight successes under her belt in that jurisdiction, has been retired following her run in the G1 British Champions Fillies & Mares S. at Ascot on British Champions Day.

The 7-year-old won all of her Group 1 races for Chris Waller before being transferred to Francis-Henri Graffard this summer in preparation for an audacious European campaign, which was focused around the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

Last year's G1 Melbourne Cup winner did not sparkle in the Northern Hemisphere, however. She failed to win on her first two starts and subsequently missed the cut for the Arc.

Instead, she ran in the G1 Prix de Royallieu on the same weekend at ParisLongchamp, finishing seventh. Verry Elleegant made her final appearance on the track with a ninth-place finish behind Emily Upjohn (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) on Champions Day.

A statement from her owners, Jamara Bloodstock Ltd, said, “Verry Elleegant will rightfully take her place among the pantheon of Australia's champion racehorses, with a record that compares favourably with any stayer of the modern era.

“Throughout her career, she demonstrated remarkable durability and consistency at the highest-level winning Group 1s as a 3-year-old filly through to a 6-year-old mare, at 1400m through to 3200m.

“She accumulated a staggering 11 Group 1 victories (equal 12th all time in Australia) and almost A$15 million in prizemoney (fourth all-time in Australia).

“Her lasting legacy won't be measured by her prize-money or Group 1 tally but more so by the joy and happiness she brought her legion of fans. Her indomitable will to win inspired us all.

“There were so many individuals that played a massive role in her success but we would like to particularly thank Chris Waller and his entire team, including track rider Chris Harwood and groom Rocky Mangat, jockey James McDonald and Francis Graffard and his stable.

“Rest assured though, the Verry Elleegant story is far from over and we now look forward to the next chapter in her remarkable story, her life as a mum. The plan is to keep her in the pristine fields of France until she can be served by a leading European stallion in Northern Hemisphere time next year. We wish to thank everyone for their love and support over the years.”

Verry Elleegant Set To Begin European Campaign In Prix Rothschild

Verry Elleegant (NZ) (Zed {NZ}) could make her first European start in August as her new trainer Francis-Henri Graffard revealed he is considering a bid for the G1 Prix Rothschild at Deauville.

A sensation in Australia, Verry Elleegant won 11 Group 1 races–including the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup–under the care of Chris Waller before it was announced in May that she would continue her career in France.

The G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and the G1 Fillies & Mares Stakes on QIPCO British Champions Day at Ascot were mentioned as possible targets when Verry Elleegant was transferred to Graffard's base.

However, Graffard is keen to take the wraps off Verry Elleegant in the Prix Rothschild before committing to plans beyond Deauville.

He said, “She is well, she might be ready for the Prix Rothschild at Deauville on Aug. 2. That will be her first start and then we will take it from there.”

Home Affairs Retires to Coolmore Australia

Dual Group 1-winning sprinter Home Affairs (Aus) (I Am Invicible {Ire}) has been retired from racing to join Coolmore Stud in Australia.

Trained by Chris Waller, the 3-year-old was down the field in his final race in Saturday's G1 Platinum Jubilee S. at Royal Ascot, his first start outside his home country, and was found to be not “100 per cent sound” after his run.

“Home Affairs has been retired from racing and will come straight to Coolmore from quarantine following his return to Australia,” said Coolmore's principal Tom Magnier.

“He wasn't 100 per cent sound after the race on Saturday which may explain his disappointing effort. It was a great shame he didn't give his true running as the form he showed in both of his Group 1 wins would have entitled him to win.”

Home Affairs had the Platinum Jubilee third Artorius (Aus) (Flyting Artie {Aus}) behind him when winning the G1 Coolmore Stud S. at Flemington in October, and he narrowly beat the G1 King's Stand S. winner Nature Strip (Aus) (Nicconi {Aus}) when landing the G1 Black Caviar Lightning S. on his next start.

Waller, who also trains Nature Strip, said,”Home Affairs is a fantastic-looking individual and was a joy to train. He had everything we look for in a racehorse.”

King’s Stand Winner Nature Strip Won’t bid for Royal Ascot Double

Nature Strip (Aus) (Nicconi {Aus}), a brilliant winner of Tuesday's King's Stand S. at Royal Ascot, will not bid to double up in the Platinum Jubilee S. on Saturday.

Trained by Chris Waller, Nature Strip slammed his King's Stand S. rivals by over four lengths and, despite pulling out of the race in rude health, will not bid to emulate the great Choisir (Aus), who was the last Australian-trained horse to complete the King's Stand and Platinum Jubilee double in 2003.

Nature Strip's managing owner Rod Lyons told Racing.com, “No [he won't run]. I think there was a fair bit of pressure on the boss to get him to run, but he said he's done his job, let's get him quarantined, get him home and get him ready for The Everest.”

Waller will be represented in the Platinum Jubilee instead by Home Affairs (Aus) (I Am Invincible {Aus}), and the legendary trainer described himself as proud of Nature Strip on Wednesday.

He Tweeted, “Our king Nature Strip has pulled up a treat and we are so proud of him. He's certainly made us very proud. It was a memorable moment for everybody.”
