Impeccably Bred Into Mischief Shines at Keeneland

Hip 356, a striking daughter of Into Mischief out of 2015 GI Alabama S. winner Embellish the Lace (Super Saver), was hammered down to Spendthrift Farm for $1.25 million, the second filly to eclipse the seven-figure threshold Tuesday as the fireworks continued at Keeneland September. The bay was consigned to the sale by Bluewater Sales on behalf of China Horse Club International, which paid $2.4 million for Embellish the Lace, in foal to Uncle Mo, at Fasig-Tipton November in 2016. It is the second produce from the mare to make better than $1 million at public auction, as the 2-year-old filly Tap the Faith (Tapit) was purchased by Claiborne Farm for the identical $1.25 million at this sale last year and returned to the worktab at Belmont Park Sept. 11. The 3-year-old filly Classique (Pioneerof the Nile) realized $700,000 at Fasig-Tipton Saratoga in 2019.

Malathaat to Target Alabama

Shadwell Stable's Malathaat (Curlin), who suffered her first career defeat when second behind Maracuja (Honor Code) as the heavy favorite in the four-horse GI Coaching Club American Oaks Saturday, will be aimed at a likely rematch with that filly in the Aug. 21 GI Alabama S.

“We had a difficult time analyzing the race beforehand and how we thought it might unfold,” admitted trainer Todd Pletcher. “There wasn't a lot of speed on paper and we were in the one post with a target on our backs, so our strategy was to let her run away from the gate and try to establish a position into the first turn, or if someone was to clear us, hopefully move out into the clear.

“Everyone left there with the same intention and by the time we got to the first quarter, we'd gone :23 and 1, which is fine if we could have a little breather along the way,” Pletcher continued. “But as soon as we got on the backside, Irad [Ortiz, Jr. aboard Clairiere] made a move and put pressure on her. She kind of had to fight off the whole field. When you're a heavy favorite in a race like that with a short field, those things can happen. I'm not disappointed with the filly at all. I thought she ran bravely considering everything that was thrown at her off the layoff. If she comes back well, we'll point towards the Alabama.”

Pletcher said CHC and WinStar Farm's Life is Good (Into Mischief), a recent addition to his New York-based stable, could make his next start in the Aug. 28 GI H. Allen Jerkens Memorial S. or in the Aug. 24 GIII Smarty Jones S. at Parx following a four-furlong drill in :48.88 (5/27) at Saratoga Saturday.

“He's a very impressive horse to watch train. He did that well in hand throughout,” Pletcher said of the work. “We'll play it by ear, but we have a couple of options with the Allen Jerkens here and the Smarty Jones at Parx would be a possibility if we needed more time. He's a super talented horse and we're fortunate to have him.”

Unbeaten in three lifetime starts, Life is Good has not started since romping to an eight-length victory in the Mar. 6 GII San Felipe S. for trainer Bob Baffert.

Harvard Has Them Seeing ‘Red’ In Maiden Romp

3rd-Indiana Grand, $31,000, Msw, 5-12, 3yo/up, 1m 70y, 1:43.45, ft, 4 1/2 lengths.
HARVARD (c, 3, Pioneerof the Nile–Sambuca Classica, by Cat Thief) finished second behind a good-looking debut from American Prince (Liam's Map) at Gulfstream Feb. 28 and was stretching out to two turns off a distant runner-up effort behind Triple Crown winner Justify (Scat Daddy)'s 'TDN Rising Star' half-brother Stage Raider (Pioneerof the Nile) in a sloppy seven-furlong maiden at Keeneland Apr. 10. Stage Raider, incidentally, is the morning-line 2-5 favorite for a one-mile Belmont allowance Friday afternoon. Pounded into 1-2 favoritism with blinkers going on for the first time, Harvard was urged along early between rivals to lead heading into the first turn and was allowed to dictate a very easy pace while traveling comfortably. Asked for his best in upper stretch, the bay put the race to bed within a few strides, accounting for 23-10 second pick W W Crazy (Jess's Dream) by 4 1/2 very comfortable lengths. Harvard is a full-brother to Classic Empire, Ch. 2yo Colt, MGISW, $2,520,220; and a half-brother to Exclamation Point (Concord Point), SP, $290,540; Anytime Magic (Fusaichi Pegasus), MSW, $202,945; and Uptown Twirl (Twirling Candy), MSW, $170,714, and is a maternal grandson of SW & MGISP In Her Glory (Miswaki). Sambuca Classic aborted to the late Pioneerof the Nile in 2019, but foaled colts by Justify in each of the last two years. Lifetime Record: 3-1-2-0, $42,800. Click for the Equibase.com chart.

Surgery for Life is Good

WinStar Farm and CHC's Life is Good (Into Mischief) has officially been taken out of consideration for the GI Kentucky Derby, trainer Bob Baffert confirmed on Los Angeles radio Sunday morning.

“He couldn't have worked more beautifully,” Baffert told Mike Willman on Thoroughbred LA radio. “It was a great, nice cruising work like he usually does. He's so light on his feet. He came back, the rider said he felt great…Then all of a sudden later in the morning, you could tell something was bothering him in the hind leg. He took a couple funny steps, so that's when we realized he had done something to his hind leg. He'll be fine, he'll be back. It wasn't anything serious, but it's enough that he'll need some time off.”

Later Sunday, XBTV's Millie Ball quoted Baffert in a tweet, “He has a very small chip in his left hind ankle. Dr. [Larry] Bramlage will do the surgery on Friday in Kentucky at Rood & Riddle.”

Life is Good is unbeaten in three starts, most recently romping by eight lengths in the Mar. 6 GII San Felipe S.

With Life Is Good out of the GI Runhappy Santa Anita Derby, Baffert said he's planning on running San Felipe S. runner-up Medina Spirit (Protonico) and possibly Defunded (Dialed In), a Mar. 6 maiden winner at Santa Anita in the Apr. 3 race.
