Boodles To Sponsor Chester Vase

British fine jeweler Boodles will sponsor the G3 Chester Vase, which is set to take place on May 4. Boodles has been the title sponsor of the Boodles May Festival at Chester Racecourse since 2013.

Louise Stewart, chief executive at Chester Race Company Ltd, said, “We are very grateful to Boodles, an iconic British brand founded locally in Liverpool, for their continued commitment to Chester Racecourse. The Boodles Chester Vase is a highlight of the Boodles May Festival, and we are hugely looking forward to this year's renewal which will be run in front of crowds for the first time in two years.”

Galileo’s Armory Clear Best In the Huxley

Like Japan (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) on Thursday, Ballydoyle's Armory (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) also got his campaign off to a flyer on Chester's “Roodee” 24 hours later with a smooth success in the G2 Melodi Media Huxley S. Settled last of the four who tackled the extended 10-furlong contest, last year's G3 Royal Whip S. winner, G1 Cox Plate runner-up and G1 Irish Champion S. third swept around the outside to take over a furlong out en route to a three-length defeat of Sangarius (GB) (Kingman {GB}). “He is a very good colt with a lethal turn of foot,” Ryan Moore said of the 6-5 favourite. “It was a steady pace and a messy race, but he has such a big change of gear he could overcome that.”

One of the best of his stable at two, Armory had won Leopardstown's G3 Tyros S. and The Curragh's G2 Futurity S. and placed in the latter venue's G1 Vincent O'Brien National S. and G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere at ParisLongchamp. Fourth in the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas back at The Curragh last June and in the G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup also there in July, the bay has turned things around from that point and Aidan O'Brien is confident there is more to come. “He's really matured and has an unbelievable turn of foot,” he said. “He's done very well over the winter, he had a lovely run in Australia last year but things didn't really work out for him so we're delighted. We were thinking after this he might go for the [May 23 G1] Tattersalls Gold Cup or the [June 16 G1] Prince of Wales's [at Royal Ascot], but probably the latter. He has plenty of pace, but we always thought he'd get 10 furlongs.”

The dam After (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) descends from De Stael (Nijinsky II) whose descendants include the champion grass mare Wandesta (GB) (Nashwan) and sprinting sire Deportivo (GB) (Night Shift). A smart performer over six and seven furlongs, placing in the G3 Ballyogan S., G3 Anglesey S. and G3 Brownstown S., her first of five foals by Galileo was the useful handicapper Bond Street (Ire) while her third is the stable's 3-year-old maiden colt HMS Seahorse (Ire). A daughter of the GI Garden City Breeders' Cup-placed Noahs Ark (Ire) (Charnwood Forest {Ire}) who also produced the listed scorer Temps Au Temps (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), her 2-year-old daughter of the Coolmore great is as-yet unnamed, while her 2021 progeny is a colt.

More Armory From Ballydoyle

Chester hosts just the one black-type event on Friday, with the G2 Melodi Media Huxley S. over an extended 10 furlongs acting as the first port of call in 2021 for Ballydoyle's Armory (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Surprising a few judges when third at 66-1 and in front of Sottsass (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) and Japan (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) in the G1 Irish Champion S. in September, the bay went on to show that was no fluke when runner-up to Sir Dragonet (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) in Moonee Valley's G1 Cox Plate on soft ground in October. “He is a very classy horse and the one to beat on form, though no more rain would help,” Ryan Moore commented.

Armory's chief threat looks to be Juddmonte's 'TDN Rising Star' Sangarius (GB) (Kingman {GB}), who has undergone a wind operation since beating Bangkok (Ire) (Australia {GB}) in the Listed Quebec S. at Lingfield in December. That was only the second outing for the Sir Michael Stoute-trained homebred since his success in the G3 Hampton Court S. at Royal Ascot in June 2019 and he has all the potential to become another of his trainer's specials in the older horse department. “Sangarius had a bit of a disjointed season last year, but he actually came back and produced a pretty smart performance when he won at Lingfield,” Teddy Grimthorpe said. “We need to get him rolling and get a clean run with him this year, if we can. He certainly has talent, so let's hope things go well for him this season.”

Galileo’s Japan On Top In the Ormonde

First time over further than a mile-and-a-half facing a serious rival in Trueshan (Fr) (Planteur {Ire}) meant that Thursday's G3 Ormonde S. at Chester represented a tough ask for Japan (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), but in the end his class told as the Ballydoyle stalwart opened his 5-year-old campaign on the right note. Enjoying a perfect trip on the rail nestled behind the leading duo early, the 13-8 favourite was angled out by Ryan Moore to come around Trueshan on the home bend and began to assert from the furlong pole for a 3/4-of-a-length success.
