Cigar Mile Winner Americanrevolution to Rockridge Stud

CHC Inc. and WinStar Farm LLC's Americanrevolution (Constitution–Polly Freeze, by Super Saver) has been retired from racing and will stand in 2024 at Rockridge Stud in Hudson, NY, his connections announced in a release late Thursday afternoon. The Todd Pletcher trainee was a four-time stakes winner at three, culminating in the $750,000 GI Cigar Mile H. as he registered a Beyer Speed Figure of 105.

“This is the best horse to retire in New York in a very long time,” said Rockridge Stud's Lere Visagie. “We all know we need top-class horses standing in New York to keep mares home. The winner of one of New York's most historic Grade Is for older horses is the way to do it. We can't wait to get started.”

Based on his Cigar Mile win, as well as wins in the New York-restricted Empire Classic H., Albany S., and New York Derby, Americanrevolution was named 2021 New York-bred Horse of the Year and champion 3-year-old male during the New York Thoroughbred Breeders Inc.'s annual awards ceremony in 2022. During his career, Americanrevolution also placed in the GI Jockey Club Gold Cup S., the GI Pennsylvania Derby, and the GII Stephen Foster S. The chestnut retired with a record of 12-5-2-1 and earnings of $1,286,810. Twice he registered Beyers of 108 and overall secured triple-digit Beyers five times.

“With Belmont being renovated, we feel it is time to re-enter the New York market,” said Elliott Walden, WinStar Farm's president, CEO, and racing manager. “WinStar Farm and CHC Inc. are staying in and committing 10 good mares to Americanrevolution to help launch his career in New York. We hope to breed another Funny Cide, one of the best New York-breds of all time.”

Bred by Fred Hertrich III and John Fielding in New York, Americanrevolution was acquired at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton New York-Bred Select Yearling Sale in Saratoga out of the Taylor Made Sales consignment for $275,000 by CHC Inc. and Maverick Racing. He hails from the same family as MGISW Stop Traffic (Cure the Blues), who produced GISW and sire Cross Traffic (Unbridled's Song).

Americanrevolution will stand as a partnership between WinStar Farm, CHC Inc., Rockridge Stud, Taylor Made Stallions, Mill Creek Farm, and Fortune Farm in a deal brokered by Matt Bowling of Bowling Bloodstock.

“We are thrilled to be a part of this exciting stallion prospect–probably the most exciting stallion to retire to New York in several decades,” said Ben Taylor of Taylor Made Stallions.

Former WinStar stallion and Breeders' Cup winner Tourist (Tiznow) stood his first New York season at Rockridge this year.

“I'm thrilled to see a Grade I winner sired by one of Kentucky's finest stallions retiring to New York,” said Fasig-Tipton's Boyd Browning. “This highlights the growing significance of the racing and breeding industry in the state. I'm eagerly anticipating the opportunity to sell his New York offspring at our Saratoga sales.”

Americanrevollution will stand his initial season for $12,500 S&N. He will be available for viewing at WinStar Farm in Kentucky throughout the November Sale and during stallion shows.

First Foal Is A Colt For WinStar Farm’s Improbable

WinStar Farm's multiple Grade 1 winner Improbable, the 2020 Eclipse champion older male, sired his first reported foal when a colt was born at Bluewater Farm on Monday night, Jan. 10.

Bred by CHC Inc., the colt, who hails from a family replete with black-type, is out of the winning Into Mischief mare Dark Corner, a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Perfect Alibi, winner of the 2019 Grade 1 Spinaway Stakes.

“We've been eagerly anticipating the Improbable foals since retiring him to stud in 2021,” said Liam O'Rourke, WinStar's Director of Bloodstock Services. “We're thrilled for our longtime partner CHC having his first foal. We look forward to welcoming many more foals out of quality mares like Dark Corner.”

Improbable, City Zip's only four-time Grade 1 winner, rattled off three consecutive Grade 1 victories in 2020, taking the G1 Hollywood Gold Cup at Santa Anita, the historic G1 Whitney Stakes at Saratoga, and the G1 Awesome Again Stakes at Santa Anita. In the latter, he defeated champion Maximum Security by 4 1/2 lengths, recording a career-best Beyer Speed Figure of 108.

Undefeated in three starts at two—a pair of them stakes—Improbable reported home a spectacular five-length winner over subsequent Grade 1 winner Mucho Gusto in the 2018 G1 Los Alamitos Futurity, getting the 1 1/16 miles in 1:41.18, the fastest time of the race in over a decade. A stakes winner each season from two to four, Improbable concluded his stellar career with a runner-up finish in the $6 million Breeders' Cup Classic in 2020, earning a 108 Beyer and a 2 Ragozin, the fastest of the field. All told, he won seven starts, six of them stakes, and bankrolled $2,729,520 for owners WinStar Farm, CHC Inc., and SF Racing.

From the immediate female family of Hard Spun, Improbable was booked full in 2021, having bred 177 mares in his initial season at stud. Improbable was the No. 1 Freshman Sire by 2021 CPI (Class Performance Index)—3.80 and number-two sire by CI (Comparable Index)—2.39 in the $25,000-$49,999 stud fee range. Represented in 2021 by first in-foal mares that sold for $550,000, $445,000, $420,000, etc., Improbable was the number-two freshman covering sire by average—$218,187.

Improbable is a complete outcross in his first four generations. His dam, Rare Event, is by A.P. Indy, while his second dam is a half-sister to Hard Spun. Improbable will stand the upcoming breeding season for $35,000 S&N.

Life Is Good Cruises To Victory in Kelso

'TDN Rising Star' Life Is Good got an easy prep for his expected appearance in the GI Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile in Saturday's GII Kelso H. at Belmont Park, scoring virtually untouched and eased down late. Off at 1-20 with $212,404 of the $251,965 win pool and $353,424 of the $389,409 place pool on his nose, the $525,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase easily out-footed distant second choice Chance It (Currency Swap) and led through an opening quarter in a manageable :23.53. Chance It was pulled up and out of the race with about 5 1/2 furlongs to travel, leaving Fort Peck to do the chasing and the half-mile was up in :46.58. Still traveling well within the grasp of Irad Ortiz, Jr. as they neared the quarter pole, Life Is Good received a few cracks of an underhanded crop on his right shoulder in upper stretch and was taken in hand for the better part of the final sixteenth of a mile without truly being asked for a top effort. He returned $2.10 to win and place.

“He's a nice horse,” said the winning pilot. “He went fast and he kept going. He did everything smooth and easy… As soon as I asked him, he took off. He responded really well.”

Life Is Good won his first three trips to the post for Bob Baffert, including an eight-length romp in the GII San Felipe S., but missed the Classics before being transferred to Todd Pletcher in the aftermath of Baffert-trained Medina Spirit (Protonico)'s GI Kentucky Derby positive.

Life Is Good most recently finished runner-up to Jackie's Warrior (Maclean's Music) in the GI H. Allen Jerkens Memorial S. at Saratoga Aug. 28 in his first try for Pletcher.

“He's been training super and we were looking forward to getting him going again. I thought he was very impressive,” Pletcher said. “I left it in Irad's hands. We weren't going to send him away from there, but it looked on paper like he was the main speed. What we were focused on was getting him to settle a little bit, stay on the rail and relax. I thought he did that beautifully today.”

Pedigree Notes:

Life Is Good is one of an ever-growing 85 graded winners for his super sire Into Mischief, who led all sires at Keeneland September by gross with $25,967,000 in total sellers at an average of $418,823 for 62 sold. He is bred on the same cross as MGISW and top young sire Practical Joke.

Life Is Good's dam Beach Walk was a $435,000 KEESEP yearling herself and was on the board in four of five lifetime starts in maiden special weight company. The daughter of SW/MGISP Bonnie Blue Flag also hails from the family of MGISW turfer Diamondrella (GB) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}). She has a yearling filly by Blame and a foal colt by Candy Ride (Arg). Beach Walk was bred back to Into Mischief for 2022.
