Medoro Stays Perfect In Blue Norther

Medoro's first stakes race looked eerily similar to her Del Mar debut Dec. 1 with both resulting in narrow, hard-closing wins. Stretching out from five furlongs to one mile Friday, the Peter Eutron trainee broke from an outside gate and was content to settle off the speed while kept wide and in the clear by Antonio Fresu. Racing in the back half of the field of nine, the 2-1 favorite began to make up ground into leader Chatalas and drew alongside that rival at the head of the lane. Unleashed into the final furlong, Medoro swept onto even terms on the outside and just out-dueled the runner up for the win. The stewards looked into a pair of events during the race, one involving Zona Verde (Ire) (Calyx {GB}) and the third-place runner Mo Fox Givin in the stretch, but opted to let the order of finish stand.

“I would have liked to stay third or fourth and not wide,” said Fresu. “Unfortunately I was caught wide around the first turn and I didn't have any place to go, so I just tried to reduce pace, just to hold her there to save some energy and just give her a breather. At the quarter pole, I asked her because at Del Mar she had an exceptional turn of foot, so I just wanted to see if today at a mile she would have the same. When she switched leads, she just flew home.”

One of 18 stakes winners for sire Honor Code, Medoro is the first foal out of a half-sister to the dam of Perryville S. record-setter and new sire Nashville (Speightstown). Further back in the family is GI Kentucky Derby upsetter Giacomo (Holy Bull) along with MGISW Tiago (Pleasant Tap) and GSW/MGISP Stanwyck (Empire Maker). The winner has a Speightstown yearling half-brother and a weanling half-brother by Honor A.P. while her dam is pregnant to Not This Time. Baffert Wins Seventh Straight Starlet With Nothing Like You

Nothing Like You (Malibu Moon) gave Hall of Famer Bob Baffert a seventh straight victory in the GII Starlet S. at Los Alamitos Saturday evening.

Drawn on the rail in the field of six, the last-out Desi Arnaz S. winner was sent to the front by Juan Hernandez and was pressed through an opening quarter in :23.24. She gained some separation through a half mile in :47.40, let it out a notch on the far turn and ran up the score in the stretch to win by 5 1/4 lengths over Great Forty Eight (Constitution).

The latter was disqualified from second and placed fourth after shifting out and interfering with favored GII Chandelier S. winner Chatalas (Gun Runner) in the stretch. The maiden Flynn's Chance (Medaglia d'Oro), third across the line, was elevated to second.

Nothing Like You, a $67,000 KEENOV weanling, $20,000 KEESEP yearling and $190,000 OBSAPR juvenile, is campaigned in partnership by Georgia Antley Hunt, Jeff Giglio and John L. Rogitz.

“(Nothing Like You) was pretty fresh today because I backed off on her a bit because I'd just run her at Del Mar,” Baffert said. “Juan (Hernandez) said she popped out of there and he said nobody wanted the lead so he just took it.”

“Once I saw her on the backside with that long stride you could tell she was in control of the race,” Baffert said. “It took Nothing Like You a while to come around. She wasn't real quick. We knew once we stretched her out that would be her game. The longer the better for her.”

Nothing Like You earned her diploma by 6 1/2 lengths over the aforementioned Great Forty Eight while making her two-turn debut at fourth asking at Santa Anita Oct. 14. She turned back to seven furlongs to narrowly annex the Desi Arnaz S. at Del Mar last time Nov. 18.

“She's improving with every race and a distance is what she has always wanted,” Hernandez said. “She relaxed perfectly. I let her go at the head of the stretch and she took off.”

Pedigree Notes:

Nothing Like You, a $190,000 OBS April breezer (:10), becomes the 55th graded/group winner worldwide for the late leading sire Malibu Moon. She is the first graded winner and one of three stakes winners for her broodmare sire Brother Derek. A three-time stakes winner at Hastings, Nothing Like You's dam Miss Derek has also produced Tepin S. winner South of France (Quality Road). Nothing Like You is her most recent produce.

Baffert Has Two Chances at Seventh Straight Starlet

Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert will have two opportunities to win his seventh straight GII Starlet S. at Los Alamitos Saturday. The 1 1/16-mile feature has attracted a field of six.

The rail-drawn, 9-5 morning-line favorite Nothing Like You (Malibu Moon) enters for Baffert riding a two-race winning streak, including a nose victory in the seven-furlong Desi Arnaz S. at Del Mar last time out Nov. 18. She previously graduated by 6 1/2 lengths over next-out winner Great Forty Eight (Constitution) going a two-turn mile at Santa Anita Oct. 14.

Baffert will also saddle the green-but-good debut winner Grazia (Uncle Mo), who earned her diploma going six furlongs at Del Mar Nov. 12.

Chatalas (Gun Runner), a front-running winner of the GII Chandelier S. at Santa Anita Oct. 7, looks to get back on track following a ninth-place finish in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Nov. 3.

Geaux Rocket Ride Returns To the Worktab

Pin Oak Stud LLC's Geaux Rocket Ride (Candy Ride {Arg}), winner of the GI TVG.com Haskell S. ahead of a runner-up effort in the GI TVG Pacific Classic, breezed three-quarters of a mile in 1:13.80 over the Santa Anita main track Friday morning as he resumed his serious preparations for the GI Breeders' Cup Classic Nov. 4.

Taking to the track at around 7:45 a.m. PT, the $350,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga graduate was put through his paces by regular rider and four-time Classic winner Mike Smith, who pronounced himself pleased with the move.

“It was a good work, especially for him,” Smith said of Geaux Rocket Ride. “He's never been the flashiest horse in the morning.”

Geaux Rocket Ride breezed five furlongs in 1:00.20 (3/11) Oct. 3 and also went six panels on Oct. 9, but a time was not recorded owing to heavy morning fog. Trainer Richard Mandella said that the colt spiked a bit of a temperature out of that work, but recovered quickly.

“We had to put him on an antibiotic,” said the conditioner, who saddled Pleasant Perfect (Pleasant Colony) to victory in the 2003 Classic, one of an historic four wins on the program. “Luckily, he got right through it. It didn't amount to much. We're happy. Next week he'll have a better work.”

Three stakes winners from two weekends ago also returned to the tab Friday morning. Chatalas (Gun Runner), victorious in the GII Chandelier S. for trainer Mark Glatt, drilled a half-mile in :47.40 (3/48) and is expected to make her next appearance in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Nov. 3. Amerman Racing's Endlessly (Oscar Performance), who remained unbeaten in three starts in the GIII Zuma Beach S., geared up for the GI Juvenile Turf with a four-furlong move that was timed in :48.20 (19/48). Slider (Jimmy Creed), who earned a berth in the field for the GI Juvenile Turf Sprint courtesy of his score in the Speakeasy S., went a similar distance in :47.40.
