Gold Cup Hero Subjectivist Pleases Johnston In Newcastle Spin In Advance Of Red Sea Turf H.

Group 1 winner Subjectivist (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}), who races for Dr. J. Walker, turned in a pleasing work over the Newcastle all-weather under Joe Fanning in advance of a start in the Feb. 25 $2.5-million G3 Red Sea Turf H. in Riyadh during the $20-million G1 Saudi Cup two-day meeting.

“I was pleased with what I saw at Newcastle,” said trainer Charlie Johnston, who has taken over the training of Subjectivist after the retirement of his father, Mark. “The difficulty with any horse is that you don't put really put them into the red zone at home, but particularly with a horse of this nature who runs over these distances.

“We've never gone to the distances which he excels over, and we don't have many 120-rated stayers to work him either, so of course there's that unknown, but both myself and Joe were pleased with how he went.

“Joe knows the horse better than anyone and he said he got better and better the further he went which obviously bodes well for next weekend.”

Although he currently holds a three-race winning streak of the 2020 G1 Prix Royal Oak, the G2 Dubai Gold Cup in March of 2021 and the G1 Gold Cup that same year, the bay has been on an injury-incurred layoff for the past 18 months.

“It's been an 18-month rehab journey, so to have come this far is great and we're all very much looking forward to having him on the track again,” Johnston said.

“It's a bit of an unknown in the sense we aren't entirely sure what we have back, and it will be asking a lot to have the same horse that we had 20 months ago. I sincerely hope we do, but we won't find that out until he runs in Saudi.”

Pair Of Group 1 Winners Nominated To Winter Derby

Group 1 winners Pyledriver (GB) (Harbour Watch {Ire}) and Lord North (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) are two of the 16 nominations for the Feb. 25 £100,000 G3 BetUK Winter Derby at Lingfield.

Last seen winning the G1 King George VI And Queen Elizabeth S., the William Muir and Chris Grassick-trained 6-year-old has been on the bench since that victory. He claimed the 2021 Listed Churchill S. over 10 furlongs at that track, defeating fellow Winter Derby entry Harrovian (GB) (Leroidesanimaux {Brz}).

John and Thady Gosden's Lord North was runner-up in the 2022 Winter Derby to Alenquer (Fr) (Adlerflug {Ger}). He then tied with Panthalassa (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}) in the G1 Dubai Turf in March, before running off-the-board in a trio of Group 1s–the Tattersalls Gold Cup (fourth to Alenquer), the Prince Of Wales's S. (fifth to State Of Rest {Ire} {Starspangledbanner [Aus]}), and the Eclipse S. at Sandown in July, where he was fourth to Vadeni (Fr) (Churchill {Ire}).

Another signed on for the Winter Derby is Charlie Johnston's Living Legend (Ire) (Camelot {GB}), who won the G2 Jockey Club S. in 2022. He was most recently second in the G2 Princess Of Wales's S. in July.

Trainer Charlie Johnston said, “We have given Living Legend a BetUK Winter Derby entry and he has also been nominated for the Amir Trophy in Qatar, which takes place the week before.

“Plans are fluid at the moment. We would ultimately love to take him back to Newcastle for the Easter Classic, although with the way the programme book has fallen this year, it is going to make it difficult to qualify unless we win the Winter Derby.

“The Magnolia S. and Finals Day were three weeks apart last year, whereas this year it is only a six-day gap due to Easter falling earlier, which makes having three qualifying runs very difficult.

“There is plenty to think about and we will decide whether we go for the Winter Derby or take up the Qatar option nearer the time.”

Subjectivist Eyes Return On Saudi Cup Undercard

Not seen since Royal Ascot success two years ago, Group 1 winner Subjectivist (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) could return on the Saudi Cup undercard in Riyadh next month, according to trainer Charlie Johnston.

“Entries closed yesterday morning for the Saudi Cup meeting and Subjectivist has been entered in the [G3] Red Sea Turf H.–[the] 1 mile and 7-furlong race,” Johnston said.

Winner of the 2021 G1 Gold Cup June 17, the now-6-year-old was previously victorious in the 2020 G1 Prix Royal-Oak at ParisLongchamp on Oct. 25 and the 2021 G2 Dubai Gold Cup at Meydan in March of 2021. During his win at the Royal Meeting, he sustained a potentially career-threatening leg injury. While there were initially hopes he would return to defend his Gold Cup crown, it did not happen by the summer.

Subjectivist is now back in full work mode, and while Johnston is taking a day-to-day approach, he is pleased with what he has seen so far.

Reporting on Subjectivist's progress, “He's been back in work since early October and has been cantering all the way through December and into January now. There's still a long way to go–we haven't started to turn the screw just yet with any faster work.

“Every day the fingers are crossed watching him, but so far so good.”

Just this week, Johnston took over the training licence fully from his record-breaking father Mark. He has already celebrated a pair of winners.

‘We Like To Set Targets’ – Charlie Johnston Eyes 200 Winners This Season

Charlie Johnston has revealed that he has ambitions of training at least 200 winners in his own name in 2023 after taking over fully from his record-breaking father Mark at the turn of the year.

After a year sharing the licence with his son, Mark Johnston confirmed that Charlie would take the reins this season, and it didn't take the new master of Middleham long to get off the mark with just his second runner Asdaa (Ire) (Dutch Art {GB}) scoring at Kempton on Wednesday.

That tally was quickly doubled on Thursday when Demillion (Ire) (Roaring Lion) won cosily at Wolverhampton.

Speaking about plans for the season, Johnston said, “As we've said all along, we're not treating it as a huge change, but at the same time there was always going to be more eyes on those early runners than there would be ordinarily at this time of year, so it was good to get off the mark at just the second time of asking.

“With the change will come a greater scrutiny of results for the season ahead, so in that sense there is a bit of added pressure. Any dip in form or standards and people will attribute that to the change in control.”

Mark Johnston is the most successful trainer in the history of British racing in terms of numbers, having blasted through the 5,000-winner mark last summer. He also became the first trainer to saddle 200 winners in a calendar year in 2009, a feat repeated on a further nine occasions, with his tally of 249 victories in 2019 his best.

With a joint-licence, the Johnstons enjoyed 176 winners in Britain last year, as well as three on foreign soil, and Charlie is keen to ensure there is no slipping of standards.

He said, “As I jokingly said yesterday, one down, 4,999 to go-at least he hasn't set the bar too high!

“We'll be setting out to better last year if at all possible. As people probably know, we like to set targets. We set targets for each of our individual yard managers and then a target overall for the yard as a whole.

“It's ambitious to beat the 179 winners from last year, but we'll be targeting 200 winners again this year. That is the standard that we like to set ourselves and that's what we'll be aiming towards.”

Johnston added, “We're not all doing vastly different roles this week to what we were last week. A lot of the day-to-day management of things here at Kingsley Park in terms of what the horses are doing and what horses are galloping and such like, I've been planning the majority of that for a few years now, so in that sense no one's role has really changed.

“No one is taking any feet off the pedal, that's for sure-we're all still full gas to achieve as much as we can in 2023.”

Johnston also had a positive report on his Group 1-winning stayer Subjectivist (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}), who is back in full work and is pointing to the G1 Saudi Cup undercard at the end of February.

Johnston is taking a day-to-day approach, and he is pleased with what he has seen so far.

Reporting on Subjectivist's progress, “He's been back in work since early October and has been cantering all the way through December and into January now. There's still a long way to go–we haven't started to turn the screw just yet with any faster work.

“Every day the fingers are crossed watching him, but so far so good.”
