Lope de Vega’s La Barrosa Takes the Tattersalls

The subject of a gamble into 4-7 favouritism for Thursday’s G3 Tattersalls S. at Newmarket, Godolphin’s TDN Rising Star La Barrosa (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) duly delivered with a workmanlike success to back up his debut win over this seven-furlong trip at Ascot Sept. 4. Racing behind the leaders Dark Lion (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and Qaader (Ire) (Night of Thunder {Ire}) throughout, the bay had to squeeze between them coming out of the “dip” but had the gears to get to the front with half a furlong remaining en route to a length defeat of the former. “I was quite pleased to see where he was, even if William wasn’t as comfortable as me, as I knew it would help him get into a nice rhythm,” Charlie Appleby said. “James Doyle rode him at Ascot and said to make sure we park him up in behind so he doesn’t over-race. He showed bit class there and quickened up, but he’s still learning and was quite raw. I won’t be bold and say we’ll definitely throw him into a [G1] Dewhurst or something like that, but he’s a nice horse going forward and if we take the right steps with him he’ll be a nice 3-year-old.”

There is a chance that La Barrosa could be supplemented for the Oct. 10 Dewhurst according to Appleby, who added, “Coming into today, we felt we would see what kind of performance he put up whether we contemplate supplementing for a Dewhurst and from what we have seen today, it is up for discussion. I feel he has learnt again today and he is entitled to come forward a bit more. He travels very well and I wouldn’t want him to be doing it the wrong way round yet. I think seven is his trip for the moment, though I’m not saying he won’t get a mile in time. While he is learning, I think this is his right trip for the moment. This horse is a work horse, whereas [the G2 Superlative S. winner] Master of the Seas is not a work horse. Master of the Seas just goes about his work and he would go past you in the string and you wouldn’t take much notice, whereas this horse has got a bit of presence about him and spring in his step.”

A 750,000gns Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1 graduate, La Barrosa is a son of the G3 Prix de Psyche and G3 C.L. Weld Park S. runner-up and G3 Sandown Classic Trial third Bikini Babe (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}). She is a daughter of the multiple stakes winner Zeiting (Ire) (Zieten) before producing a total of six black-type performers including the group scorers Combat Zone (Ire) (Refuse To Bend {Ire}), Scottish (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) and Royal Empire (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}). Zeiting’s G3 Prix Miesque-placed Zut Alors (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}) was in turn responsible for four black-type performers headed by the G1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches and GIII Honey Fox S. winner Precieuse (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}) and the listed-placed sprinter Baccarat (Ire) (Dutch Art {GB}). Among Zeiting’s half-siblings is the G3 Prix du Bois scorer Dolled Up (Ire) (Whipper) and Madany (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) who is the dam of the G2 Hungerford S. winner and G1 2000 Guineas S. runner-up Massaat (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) and the G1 Commonwealth Cup winner Eqtidaar (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}). Next up from Bikini Babe is a yearling filly by Tamayuz (GB) named Once (Ire).

Space Blues Done For The Season

Godolphin’s ‘TDN Rising Star’ and last-out G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest victor Space Blues (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) will miss the Oct. 4 G1 Prix de la Foret and the remainder of the season after meeting with a setback.

The 4-year-old Space Blues won all four starts in Europe this season, including the G3 Prix de la Porte Maillot and the G2 Lennox S. prior to his Group 1 breakthrough.

“We are obviously very disappointed that we will not see Space Blues line up in the Prix de la Foret next month, but look forward to seeing him back on the racecourse in the new year,” said trainer Charlie Appleby.

La Barrosa Centre Stage On Cambridgeshire Opener

Newmarket’s three-day Cambridgeshire meeting starts on Thursday, with Godolphin’s ‘TDN Rising Star’ La Barrosa (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) lined up for the card’s sole pattern race, the G3 Tattersalls S. Impressive on his winning debut over this seven-furlong trip at Ascot on Sept. 4, the bay is certain to start at cramped odds after two winners have boosted that form.

“La Barrosa produced a very pleasing debut at Ascot and has come out of the race well,” Charlie Appleby said. “We felt that he has shown us enough to merit the step up to pattern company and this should tell us more about his future.”

He meets Middleham Park Racing’s Ventura Tormenta (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), who faces a stiff task under a five-pound penalty for his success in the six-furlong G2 Prix Robert Papin at Chantilly on July 19. Sixth last time in the G2 Flying Childers S. over five at Doncaster on Sept. 11, the versatile bay needs the forecast rain to be light. “We’ve gone up and down in trip with him a bit, but the guys that ride him think that this trip is what he wants,” trainer Richard Hannon said. “He was the last off the bridle over seven furlongs in a Group 2 on the July Course [when fifth in Superlative S.], so let’s hope we have made the right decision. I hope the ground isn’t too soft. He has been busy all season and he ran a good race last time out at Doncaster.”

Magical Could Target Breeders’ Cup After Defeating Ghaiyyath In Irish Champion Stakes

If you get into a battle with Magical you better bring everything you've got because she's a formidable force and proved it once more in this weekend's Irish Champion Stakes, writes Bradley West.

Having been beaten by fierce rival and pre-race favorite Ghaiyyath at York last month, the five-year-old mare exacted revenge by winning a straight fight against Charlie Appleby's star in the showpiece race on Day One of Longines Irish Champions Weekend.

The victory, Magical's second consecutive success in the 1m2f bout, means Aidan O'Brien extends his record as the leading trainer in the race with his ninth triumph.

But O'Brien reserved all his praise for the sire of Galileo highlighting how, in the heat of battle, there are very few better than her.

“What she wants is to always eyeball a horse in battle,” O'Brien said. “Seamie [Heffernan] was happy to make the running today, if William [Buick] was going to go then Seamus was going to go and keep her interested. He gave her a brilliant ride.

“She's one serious mare, when you get into a battle with her. It's really when you get into a battle with her when you really see what she can do.

“We're learning about her all the time. If you get away from her she gets a bit lazy, if you get into a fight with her very few will eyeball her. That's what she did with the colt.

“She's a great filly. It wasn't a big field but my god they were good horses in it.”

Ever the fast starter, Ghaiyyath took to the front in the early running deploying his legendary cruising speed to good effect.

But it didn't take long for O'Brien duo Magical and Japan to enter the fray, as the front three pulled away from the rest.

With not long to go it became a straight shootout between Magical and Ghaiyyath, one which saw Buick ease O'Brien's star away to double up at Leopardstown.

The victory gave veteran Seamie Heffernan another high-profile success in what has been an outstanding season for the 48-year-old.

Having already won the Irish 1,000 Guineas with Peaceful and the Irish Derby with Santiago in 2020, Heffernan crowned a third prestigious Irish showpiece win of the year – with the focus now turning to a potential crack at the Breeders' Cup.

O'Brien added: “We were very happy after York with what she was able to do. She just lost interest a little bit.

“I think so [she'll have a crack at the Breeders Cup]. Something like that would suit her really well.

“But this is a massive race. Of all the European races, prestige-wise, this is probably one of the most, if not the most.

“It's the highest rating race over a ten-year period and it comes out on top of all the races. All the high rating horses turn up here.

“It's the perfect place on the calendar, the perfect ground, the perfect mile and a quarter the perfect distance.”
