Bahraini Listed Races Attract Godolphin Participation

A trio of runners bearing the Godolphin royal blue will contest the Listed His Majesty The King's Cup Sponsored By Bapco and the Listed Al Methaq Mile in Bahrain on Friday.

G3 Glorious S. winner and Group 1-placed Passion And Glory (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}), representing Saeed bin Suroor, and First Ruler (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) from the Charlie Appleby yard both line up in the King's Cup. Appleby also saddles listed winner and multiple group-placed Modern News (GB) (Shamardal) in the Al Methaq Mile.

Appleby said, “First Ruler has got a progressive profile. This is his first test at listed level so we will learn a bit more about him. His profile is going the right way that he doesn't look out of place at this level, but we will be wiser afterwards. The track and conditions should suit him.”

On Modern News Appleby added, “Modern News is a solid campaigner; I was delighted with his last start at Meydan and stepping back up to a mile will suit him. With a nice draw, I think he is the one they've got to beat. He has got a penalty, but I think he can overcome that, and conditions will suit him.”

Zagato (GB) (Frankel {GB}), who won last year's edition of the King's Cup, will attempt to defend his crown for trainer Fawzi Nass. Allan Smith has two in the race for Al Adiyat Racing: Rayounpour (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}) and Recovery Run (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}).

Smith said, “Recovery Run and Rayounpour have both been in and out of form this season, but they're both working well so we're hopeful. The competition is getting much better in Bahrain and the strength of the horses is amazing in the last three years. We love the competition that's what it's all about, it makes everyone get better horses and improve their stable.”

Smith added, “This is the raceday of our season. It always has been The King's Cup. It's the equivalent to Royal Ascot; it's the pinnacle of racing in Bahrain.”

The feature race, The King's Cup, will be available to watch live on Racing TV and via live stream on The Bahrain Turf Club website at 12:45 p.m. UK time.

Breeders’ Cup Winner Rebel’s Romance Out Of Super Saturday Due To Setback

Godolphin's Rebel's Romance (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), who won the GI Breeders' Cup Turf at Keeneland in November, will miss an intended start in Saturday's G2 Dubai City Of Gold due to inflammation in his foreleg, the operation announced via Twitter.

Trained by Charlie Appleby, the 5-year-old is still an intended runner in the Mar. 25 G1 Dubai Sheema Classic on the $12-million G1 Dubai World Cup undercard.

“Rebel's Romance was found to have inflammation in his foreleg during a routine inspection this morning and will miss Saturday's City Of Gold,” Godolphin tweeted. “He is still aiming for the Dubai Sheema Classic on World Cup night.”

A winner of all five of his starts last year, the gelding claimed a Newmarket listed affair in June, before adding Goodwood's July 29 G3 Glorious S. and clawed out a neck victory in the G1 Grosser Preis von Berlin on Aug. 14. He added another German top-tier score in the Preis von Europa on Sept. 25, his Breeders' Cup warm up. Saturday's start would have been his first outing in 2023.

Creative Force Rerouted From Saudi Arabia To Al Quoz Sprint After Spiking A Temperature

Godolphin's Group 1 winner Creative Force (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) has been removed from consideration for the $30.35-million Saudi Cup meeting after spiking a temperature, and will instead target the G1 Al Quoz Sprint in Dubai next month.

“Creative Force spiked a temperature earlier today and following unsatisfactory blood tests, it has been decided that he will not travel to Saudi Arabia,” Godolphin tweeted. “He will now be aimed at the Al Quoz Sprint on Dubai World Cup night.”

Trained by Charlie Appleby, the 5-year-old gelding won the G1 British Champions Sprint S. in October of 2021. Last year he placed three times at that tier when second in the Platinum Jubilee S. at Royal Ascot in June second up, then ran fourth in the July S. His latest efforts were a pair of thirds–defending his title on QIPCO British Champions Day, and in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint at Keeneland in November.

Teofilo’s Nations Pride Too Strong In The Dubai Millennium

Reappearing for the first time since his fifth in the GI Breeders' Cup Turf, last year's GI Saratoga Derby Invitational and GIII Jockey Club Derby Invitational winner Nations Pride (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) got his 2023 campaign off to a flyer with a comfortable success in Friday's G3 Dubai Millennium S. at Meydan. The pick of William Buick of the Charlie Appleby duo and marginally the second favourite at 11-8 behind stablemate Ottoman Fleet (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), the homebred travelled notably strongly behind the leading pair throughout the early stages. Rolling to the front 300 metres from the finish, he was pushed out to score by 1 1/4 lengths from Zagrey (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}) as Ottoman Fleet faded late to be a further half length away in third.

Nations Pride has not raced in his native England since finishing eighth in the Derby, his sole blip having come after earning a supplementary for the Blue Riband when beating Hoo Ya Mal (GB) (Territories {Ire}) by seven lengths in the Listed Newmarket S. in April. Highly effective at or around this 10-furlong trip on a conventional track, he is now the winner of this venue's inaugural Jumeirah Derby, the aforementioned Saratoga Derby Invitational and Jockey Club Derby Invitational as well as being a possibly unfortunate runner-up in the GI Belmont Derby Invitational.
Appleby, who was winning this race for the sixth consecutive year, is considering the G1 Jebel Hatta and G1 Dubai Turf. “Immediately, you'd say have a crack at the Dubai Turf, as they'll go a good gallop over the 1800 metres there, but we'll see how the cards fall,” he said.
