Godolphin’s Triple Group 1 Winner And Classic Hero Native Trail Retired

Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), an unbeaten champion 2-year-old and brilliant winner of the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas last year, has been retired.

The Charlie Appleby-trained colt won three times at the highest level and will embark on a stud career next year, according to Godolphin's Director Of Studs, Liam O'Rourke.

He said, “Native Trail has had an exceptional career and owes us nothing. We feel now is the time to retire him and he will take up stud duties in 2024.”

Native Trail was last seen finishing eighth in Tuesday's G1 Queen Anne behind Triple Time (Ire) (Frankel {GB}).

Along with his Irish Guineas success, he landed two Group 1 races as a juvenile–the National S. at the Curragh followed by the Dewhurst at Newmarket. The Le Haras d'Haspel-bred was also second in the G1 2000 Guineas in 2022.

The 4-year-old retires having won six of his 11 starts and has amassed over £1 million in prize-money. He was a €50,000 Arqana December foal, 67,000gns Tattersalls October Book 1 yearling, and a 210,000gns Tattersalls Craven Breeze-Up 2-year-old.

The son of Needleleaf (GB) (Observatory), herself a full-sister to Group 1-winning sprinter African Rose (GB) and G3 Prix d'Aumale heroine and Classic-placed Helleborine (GB), is from the extended family of G1 Dewhurst S. winner Distant Music (Distant View). Helleborine is the dam of dual group winner Calyx (GB) (Kingman {GB}), who won the G2 Coventry S.

Stud plans will be announced in due course.

Kodiac Filly A New TDN Rising Star

Hot property at 1-3 for Thursday's Broad Oak Fillies' Novice S. at Haydock, Godolphin's Star Of Mystery (GB) (Kodiac {GB}–Mistrusting {Ire}, by Shamardal) made even those odds look generous as she registered a TDN Rising Star performance when breaking her maiden by 11 lengths. Having met a potentially top-class peer in the Crisfords' Carla's Way (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) on debut over nearly 6 1/2-furlongs at Doncaster 12 days previously, the Charlie Appleby-trained half-sister to Dark Angel's GI Summer S. winner Mysterious Night (Ire) and GI Just a Game S. and GI Diana S. heroine Althiqa (GB) looked to have a soft touch here if repeating that form and did so in style under James Doyle.

Keen initially behind the leading pair, the homebred tanked her way to the front at the halfway mark of the six-furlong trip and powered clear with the rail to guide her. The James Ferguson-trained debutante Royal Elysian (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) won the race for second, 1 1/2 lengths in front of the Karl Burke-trained Out Of Line (GB) (Showcasing {GB}). “She ran a nice race on debut and the winner of that race set a decent standard, I thought,” the winning rider said. “It was testament to this filly that she got so close to her and she was green as well. She looks at everything, so I was keen to get her back and my tack shifted back so it wasn't a great first couple of furlongs but she picked up well and there is plenty of improvement to come.”

Pedigree Notes
Star Of Mystery is TDN Rising Star number six for Kodiac, with this year's 2000 Guineas runner-up Hi Royal (Ire) and past G1 Cheveley Park S. heroine Fairyland (Ire) the pick. She is the fifth foal out of Mistrusting, who took the Listed Boadicea Fillies S. before providing the operation with the two Dark Angel luminaries who have racked up six black-type and graded-stakes wins between them including their three at the highest level. The second dam is the G2 Cherry Hinton S. winner Misheer (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), who was also second in the G1 Cheveley Park S. Like Althiqa's first foal born this year, Mistrusting's yearling colt is by the operation's powerhouse Dubawi (Ire).

Arqana €2M Sensation Snags TDN Rising Star In Haydock Debut

Godolphin's Ancient Wisdom (Fr) (Dubawi {Ire}–Golden Valentine {Fr}, by Dalakhani {Ire}) turned heads when selling for €2-million at last year's Arqana August fixture, and he was back in the limelight with a highly polished debut display in Friday's GPW Recruitment Carl Foster Memorial EBF Novice S. at Haydock. The well-supported 6-5 favourite hit the line powerfully and finished clear of Under The Sun (GB) (Golden Horn {GB}), attaining 'TDN Rising Star' status in the seven-furlong heat with an impressive five-length triumph.

Ancient Wisdom settled into a comfortable rhythm behind the leaders in fourth after a sharp exit from an outer stall. Bounding forward in the straight to launch his bid on the bridle passing the quarter-mile marker, he quickened in style to settle the contest in a matter of strides approaching the final furlong and surged clear in taking fashion to rout his rivals by daylight. The April-foaled bay took several furlongs to gear down and was halfway along the backstraight before doing so.

Ancient Wisdom, half to a yearling colt by Lope De Vega (Ire), is the third of four reported foals and second scorer produced by G3 Prix Minerve winner Golden Valentine (Fr) (Dalakhani {Ire}), herself one of seven stakes performers out of G3 Prix Cleopatre victrix Gold Round (Ire) (Caerleon). Golden Valentine's siblings include her G3 Prix du Lys-winning full-brother Goldwaki (Ger), GIII Robert J Frankel S. victrix and GI Rodeo Drive S. runner-up Luck (Kitten's Joy) and the dam of G3 Prix Vanteaux winner and GI E P Taylor S. third Platane (GB) (Le Havre {Ire}). Gold Round, in turn, is a half-sister to storied multiple champion and three-time GI Breeders' Cup Mile heroine Goldikova (Ire) (Anabaa), G1 Prix Vermeille victrix Galikova (Fr) (Galileo {Ire}) and multiple Group 1-placed sire Anodin (Ire) (Anabaa).
