Lope de Vega’s Half to Pinatubo Debuts at Ascot

Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Friday's Insights features a half-sister to champion juvenile Pinatubo.

13.50 Ascot, Novice, £15,000, 2yo, f, 6fT
PANAREA (IRE) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) is the seventh foal out of Godolphin's Lava Flow (Ire) (Dalakhani {Ire}), responsible for the operation's outstanding champion juvenile Pinatubo (Ire) by Lope De Vega's sire Shamardal. Introduced by Charlie Appleby in an intriguing affair, the April-foaled chestnut gets seven pounds from Fitri Hay's winner Pink Satin (GB) (Churchill {Ire}), the Paul and Oliver Cole-trained half-sister to the GI Man o'War hero Highland Chief (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}) who was third to Thursday's Listed Star S. winner Shuwari (Ire) (New Bay {GB}) at Newbury last month.

HOW THEY FARED
14.40 Sandown, Mdn, £10,000, 2yo, 7fT
Nawara Stud's Reliant (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), a homebred half-brother to MG1SW sire Mishriff (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}), was never a factor on debut and finished 6 1/2 lengths behind the winner in a never-nearer sixth.

18.45 Newbury, Mdn, £10,000, 2yo, f, 7fT
Hot Fashion (GB) (Too Darn Hot {GB}), the half-sister to the G1 Juddmonte International heroine Arabian Queen (Ire), did everything right on debut but was unfortunate to meet one too good on the other side of the track and could have a big future.

18.52 Leopardstown, Mdn, €16,500, 2yo, 8fT
The Equator (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), the son of the G1 Haydock Sprint Cup and G1 Commonwealth Cup heroine Quiet Reflection (GB) (Showcasing {GB}), was up near the pace throughout and after hitting a flat spot in midstraight picked up again late to be fourth in a tight finish.

Kodiac’s TDN Rising Star Star Of Mystery Dominates The Empress

Backing up the impression of her 11-length Haydock novice success last month, Godolphin's TDN Rising Star Star Of Mystery (GB) (Kodiac {GB}–Mistrusting {Ire}, by Shamardal) turned Newmarket's Listed Maureen Brittain Memorial Empress Fillies' S. into another procession on Saturday. Travelling strongly for William Buick throughout the first half of the six-furlong contest, the Charlie Appleby-trained half-sister to Dark Angel's GI Summer S. winner Mysterious Night (Ire) and GI Just a Game S. and GI Diana S. heroine Althiqa (GB) was allowed to stride to the front before two out and was totally dominant from there. At the line, the 4-5 favourite had recorded a fast time for good ground four lengths ahead over Cry Fiction (Ire) (El Kabeir), with the same margin back to Unbreak My Heart (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) in third.

“She's a neat and strong model and has always shown natural pace, but has been a little bit buzzy and not easy so the team has done a great job,” Charlie Appleby said of the winner, who was runner-up to the G3 Albany S. disappointment Carla's Way (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) on debut over nearly 6 1/2-furlongs at Doncaster 12 days before her Haydock romp. “It's great winning by those distances, it's just that sometimes they don't learn a great deal but she can't do any more than she's been doing so we're delighted. My daughter named her, so I've got her to thank. We'll work back from a [G1] Cheveley Park, but where she goes in between I don't know.”

Star Of Mystery is the fifth foal out of Mistrusting, who captured the Listed Boadicea Fillies S. before proving such an important broodmare for the Godolphin via her aforementioned high-class Dark Angel duo who have recorded a total of six black-type and graded-stakes wins between them including their three at the highest level. The second dam is Misheer (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), who was successful in the G2 Cherry Hinton S. over this course and distance before finishing runner-up in the G1 Cheveley Park S. on the Rowley Mile over the way. Like Althiqa's first foal born this year, Mistrusting's yearling colt is by the operation's powerhouse Dubawi (Ire).

Godolphin Colt Becomes Dubawi’s 35th TDN Rising Star

Making his debut in the same seven-furlong Leicester novice contest won 12 months ago by his smart stablemate Naval Power (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}), Godolphin's Great Truth (GB) (Dubawi {Ire})–Beyond Reason {Ire}, by Australia {GB}) created a big impression to become the operation's latest TDN Rising Star. Content to track the leading pair throughout the strongly-run early stages, the Charlie Appleby-trained 8-11 favourite loomed on the front end under James Doyle two out as he received a bump from the front-running Paladin (Ire) (Justify).

Striding on from there, the first foal out of the G2 Prix du Calvados and G3 Prix Six Perfections-winning dam veered right through greenness but still managed to power to a 5 1/2-length success from fellow newcomer Love You Darling (GB) (Land Force {Ire}), with 1 1/4 lengths back to the useful yardstick Phone Tag (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}) in third. Great Truth is the 35th TDN Rising Star for his outstanding sire in a list including Zarak (Fr), Coronet (GB), Benbatl (GB), Wild Illusion (GB), Too Darn Hot (GB), In Italian (GB) and Eldar Eldarov (GB).

“I sat on him last week and he showed that he had ability in his work,” Doyle said. “He was quite green cantering to post today and he took his eye off the ball and had a bit of a wander once he got to the front, but he responded good. That will come with experience and I couldn't be happier. Beyond Reason was a handy mare for us and it'll be interesting to see how far he'll get, as he's quite a reactive horse. I didn't expect him to quicken up quite as much as he did, as at home he had been going through his gears gradually but was probably just sleeping a bit.”

Pedigree Notes

Beyond Reason, a classy juvenile who was also third in the G2 Cape Verdi as a 4-year-old, also has a yearling full-brother to the winner and a colt foal by Lope De Vega (Ire). She is out of No Explaining (Ire) (Azamour {Ire}) who was successful in the GIII Gallorette H. and was third in the GII Dance Smartly S. and GII Lake George S. The family includes the GII American H. scorer Bayamo (Ire) (Valanour {Ire}), who was also runner-up in the GI Eddie Read H. and GI Charles Whittingham Memorial H.

Saturday’s Observations: TDN Rising Stars Back in Action at HQ

Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Saturday's Insights features a pair of TDN Rising Stars in Ancient Wisdom and Imperial Emperor (Ire) in a couple of different Novice races at Newmarket.

13.32 Newmarket, Nov, £8,000, 2yo, 7fT
Godolphin's €2-million Arqana August acquisition ANCIENT WISDOM (FR) (Dubawi {Ire}), a son of G3 Prix Minerve victrix Golden Valentine (Fr) (Dalakhani {Ire}), makes a swift return to action having garnered a 'TDN Rising Star' badge when streaking to an impressive five-length success over seven furlongs at Haydock earlier this month. The Charlie Appleby trainee returns over the same trip here and is opposed by five in a contest the stable has annexed twice in the last three years.

14.42 Newmarket, Nov, £10,000, 3yo, 8fT
Charlie Appleby representative IMPERIAL EMPEROR (IRE) (Dubawi {Ire}), a son of GI Man O' War S. heroine Zhukova (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), is another Godolphin 'TDN Rising Star' tasked with HQ duty in his second start. The February-foaled homebred earned his moniker over this distance at the town's Rowley Mile venue in October and is the only prior winner in a field of six. His rivals include the George Boughey trainee Moonspirit (GB) (Kingman {GB}), who is an unraced half-brother to Godolphin's three-time Group 3 winner Local Time (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}).
