Godolphin’s Eternal Hope Completes Turf Triple European Invasion in JC Oaks

After then-Irish-based Aspen Grove (Ire) (Justify) took the GI Fasig-Tipton Belmont Oaks and French filly Elusive Princess won the GIII Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Oaks, it was only fitting another European, Godolphin homebred Eternal Hope (Ire) (f, 3, Teofilo {Ire}–Voice of Truth {Ire}, by Dubawi {Ire}), should capture the GIII Fasig-Tipton Jockey Club Oaks Invitational S. Saturday for her first graded/group win. Last-out Parx stakes winner Neecie Marie (Cross Traffic) was second, while Leopardstown G3 winner Speirling Beag (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {(Ire}), sixth in the Belmont Oaks behind Aspen Grove, finished third.

Sporting that distinctive Godolphin blue, Eternal Hope dismissed her usual in-touch style and surprised with a trailing trip. She bided her time at the very back of the pack while Stephanie's Charm (Distorted Humor), intent on the lead, opened up by as many as 15 lengths through early fractions of :24.12 and :47.52. After the mile marker passed in 1:38.71, the field began reeling in the frontrunner, but it was Eternal Hope who caught the eye, kicking it into gear and sprouting wings down the center of the lane to gut out a last-strides win in the Belmont at the Big A feature. The winning margin may have been only a neck, but it didn't tell the whole tale with Eternal Hope's wide and fast charge from as many as 25 lengths back.

“It wasn't the plan to be that far back, but thankfully we have a world class jockey like Jamie [Spencer] on her and we were able to go to 'Plan B' or 'C' and ride a race from there,” said Chris Connett, assistant to trainer Charlie Appleby. “Ideally, we'd be in the box seat right off the pace and start making a run a little earlier. But she was a bit tardy and Jamie lost a bit of ground going wide, but he needed to get her rolling because it's quite sharp around here. When she straightened up and leveled out, she ran to the line so that was good.

“Very happy to get the win on the board. Jamie came back and said the ground is a bit on the quick side for her, so it was nice that she was able to put forth a performance on ground that's probably not ideal for her.”

Fresh off a third-place finish Aug. 20 in the G2 Sumbe Prix Alec Head at Deauville, Eternal Hope never got going in Soul Sister (Ire) (Frankel {GB})'s win in the GI Epsom Oaks. She had won two in a row on the synthetic earlier this year in England, including the Fitzdares Oaks Trial Fillies S. Connett said she is scheduled to travel back to Appleby's yard early in the week, with no plans regarding a next start yet set.

Pedigree Notes:

Kildangan Stud's Teofilo (Ire) may be one of several top-class Galileo (Ire) sire sons across the pond, but he is making a name for himself in America. In addition to Eternal Hope, he has also sired his share of U.S. winners, topped by 2022 GI Caesars Saratoga Derby and GIII Caesars Jockey Club Derby winner Nations Pride (Ire). Overall, Teofilo counts 50 graded/group winners among his 93 Northern Hemisphere-foaled black-type winners.

Eternal Hope is one of seven of Teofilo's stakes winners out of a Dubawi (Ire) mare. Dubawi, one of Europe's elite stallions, has 63 black-type winners out of his daughters. Interestingly, Teofilo also has one stakes winner out a mare by Dubawi's grandsire, Seeking the Gold, but none out of any Dubai Millennium (GB) mares. The latter's daughters are incredibly scant due to his tragic and abbreviated single season at stud.

Voice of Truth (Ire), the Jockey Club Oaks winner's dam, was a €35,000 purchase at the 2021 Goffs November sale while carrying a full-sister to Eternal Hope, who was a yearling at the time. Gary Mullins signed the ticket. The mare delivered an Australia (GB) colt for Mullins Feb. 24. Her 2-year-old filly, Word's Out (Ire) (Blue Point {Ire}), has not been sold publicly by Godolphin. Voice of Truth is a half to French G1SW Rio de la Plata (Rahy) and Argentinean G1SW El Expresivo (Arg) (Candy Stripes).

Yibir Punches Ticket To Breeders’ Cup Turf With Win In Jockey Club Derby At Belmont

In last place with a quarter of a mile to go, winning looked out of reach for Yibir, but the English bred went three-wide into the final turn of the 1 1/2-mile Jockey Club Derby Invitational and found running room on the far outside of the bunched field in the Belmont stretch to take the race and earn a spot in the starting gate for the Breeders' Cup Turf.

After breaking slow, jockey Jamie Spencer settled Yibir into last of eight early, with Tango Tango Tango and Slicked Back running one-two into the first turn of the 12-furlong Jockey Club Derby. Bolshoi Ballet, winner of the Grade 1 Belmont Derby in July, was third, Ryan Moore putting his colt in an ideal stalking position. With early fractions of :25.37 for the first quarter, :49.45 for the half-mile, and 1:14.46 for the six furlongs, Tango Tango Tango maintained his lead through the first mile, but Slicked Back took over after 1 1/4 miles.

Around the final turn, Spencer took Yibir wide, seeking a running lane, and then went wider still in the stretch as the field bunched up in the closing furlongs. Six wide, down the middle of the turf course, Yibir finally found a running lane and took the lead, winning the Jockey Club Derby by 2 1/2 lengths. Soldier Rising rallied from midpack to finish second with Slicked Back holding on for third.

The final time for the 1 1/2 miles was 2:26.23. Find this race's chart here.

Yibir paid $7.30, $3.50, and $3.40. Soldier Rising paid $3.00 and $2.80. Slicked Back paid $6.40.

The Jockey Club Derby Invitational Stakes is a Win and You're In Event for the Breeders' Cup Turf. Winners received a fees-paid, guaranteed spot in the corresponding race at the Breeders' Cup World Championships, scheduled for Nov. 6 at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in Del Mar, Calif.

Bred in England by owner Godolphin, Yibir is a 3-year-old gelding by Dubawi out of the Monsun mare Rumh. He is trained by Charles Appleby. Yibir has three wins in seven starts in 2021, for a lifetime record of five wins in 11 starts and $815,580 in career earnings.

Rebel’s Romance Out of Belmont

Godolphin's Rebel's Romance (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), winner of the G2 UAE Derby in March, will be forced to miss Saturday's GI Belmont S. due to an infection in a hind leg, according to a tweet from Godolphin Tuesday morning.

“We hope this is only a minor setback and we look forward to seeing him back on the racecourse in the near future,” the tweet read.

With his UAE Derby victory, Rebel's Romance had qualified into the field for the May 1 GI Kentucky Derby, but connections decided to bypass that race and aim for the Belmont. The Godolphin homebred, trained by Charles Appleby, most recently worked six furlongs in 1:14.29 (1/2) at Belmont Park May 26.

Godolphin is expected to be represented in the Belmont by last year's champion 2-year-old Essential Quality (Tapit).

Irish-Bred Space Blues Proves For Godolphin In Saudi Turf Sprint

Despite a layoff since August, some 11th-hour rain and a minor delay to the start of the race, form rang true in the US $1,000,000 1351 Turf Sprint sponsored by stc when Godolphin's Charlie Appleby-trained Space Blues (IRE) asserted himself in the final 200m.

Ridden to perfection by William Buick, the compact 5-year-old son of Dubawi broke from barrier two and sat comfortably in the second flank as early fractions were carved out by Krispen (IRE) and Urban Icon (GB).

Always keeping an eye on the Allan Smith-trained defending champion Dark Power (USA) and jockey Frankie Dettori – galloping just ahead – Buick leaned the Group 1 Prix Maurice de Gheest winner to the outside, joining Appleby stablemate Glorious Journey (GB) as they commenced four and five-wide rallies around the bend.

Hitting the stretch with a couple of lengths to find on the leaders, Space Blues accelerated nicely in the final 300m, overpowering last year's victor over the unique 1351m distance. The final margin was three-quarters of a length back to Dark Power, with a neck back to Urban Icon and Joel Rosario in third. The win was a bit of redemption for Appleby, whose Mubtasim and Glorious Journey were second and third to Dark Power in 2020's inaugural running.

Quotes:

Charlie Appleby, trainer, Space Blues, 1st: “Absolutely delighted with that. We knew he was a class horse coming into the race and he had a lovely draw. I could see (the ground) was a bit loose for him and our concern was that he might just spin a bit on it, but he's come back on the bridle turning in like a class horse and put the race to bed at the right time. He travels for fun, watching the race there. I'll be interested to see what William has to say because obviously Dubai World Cup night has to be taken into consideration.”

William Buick, jockey, Space Blues: “We had a great run through. He broke well and I didn't want to be too close to the pace. The pace was perfect. It wasn't too hot or too slow. I followed Frankie (Dettori) before the split in the straight. It was how I hoped the race would pan out. He was the best horse and I didn't want to go for any heroics. You'd imagine this would set him for the Al Quoz.”

Frankie Dettori, jockey, Dark Power, 2nd: “I had a good race. I got the cover and we ran pretty much the same race as last year. He ran well and I was delighted to have him back in great form. The winner is a Group 1 horse, let's not forget. There is just some water on the track, it still rides beautifully.”

Allan Smith, trainer, Dark Power: “Charlie's horse was always coming, but no disgrace for Dark Power. He ran a fantastic race and Frankie gave it a good run. It was pretty much copybook to last year. He ran a little bit with the choke out early on, but Frankie got him settled. He got into a nice rhythm around the bend and I was delighted with him. And good luck to Charlie. We'd done him last year and he's done us this year. We've been invited to the Dubai World Cup meeting for the Al Quoz and I suppose if anything that'll be his next move.”

Joel Rosario, jockey, Urban Icon, 3rd: “That was good – he broke well; it took him a little bit to get a position, but turning for home, for a second I thought he was going to go on, but there were strong horses coming at the end there, the first two. He ran good, though.”

Rest of jockey quotes:

James Doyle, jockey, Glorious Journey, 4th: “He ran a good race. He got a little bit restless in the gates so we started a little bit slow but we ended up being in a nice position. When Space Blues came past me I just struggled to keep tabs with him, but he ran well and it was a great result for the team.”

Adrie de Vries, Land of Legends, 5th: “I jumped well. I got on for the speed a little bit then I lost a bit of position. He came back good in the straight. He could do with a little bit further, he's a seven-furlong (1400m) horse. This was a bit short for him.”

Cristian Demuro, Momkin, 6th: “He ran good but he stopped a little bit.

Alexis Moreno, Krispen, 9th: “My horse had good speed but he did not finish well.  The best horse won the race. Best of luck for everybody.”
