Cracksman Colt Passes Jockey Club Test At Chantilly

Handed his chance at black-type after impressive wins over 10 furlongs at Cagnes-sur-Mer in January and over 9 1/2 furlongs at Bordeaux-le-Bouscat last month, Ecuries Serge Stempniak's Ace Impact (Ire) (Cracksman {GB}–Absolutly Me {Fr}, by Anabaa Blue {Ire}) showed his Classic hand in Thursday's 10-furlong Listed Prix de Suresnes at Chantilly. Again exhibiting early keenness as Cristian Demuro sought cover towards the rear, the G1 Prix du Jockey Club and G1 Grand Prix de Paris entry was far from compromised by that initial expenditure of energy as he swamped the leaders approaching the furlong pole and galloped to the line with relish to win comfortably by 1 3/4 lengths from Maniatic (Ire) (Intello {Ger}).

Trainer Jean-Claude Rouget has no doubt where the winner is heading. “This horse has everything it takes to make a good one,” he stated. “We went step-by-step with him with this race in mind as a final prep for the Prix du Jockey Club. These races are important, because if you lose and show nothing you lose your illusions. He quickened brilliantly and now we have to try to finish the job. We will be back at Chantilly on the first Sunday in June.”

The dual listed-placed dam, who has produced two other listed-placed performers in Apollo Flight (Fr) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}) and Alessandro (Fr) (Australia {GB}), also has the 2-year-old colt Arrow Eagle (Fr) by Gleneagles (Ire). Her family includes the top-class British-trained stalwarts Teleprompter (GB), Ibn Bey (GB) and Roseate Tern (GB) and the talented Red Camellia (GB) (Polar Falcon), who took the G3 Prestige S. and was third in the G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches before producing the G1 Fillies' Mile heroine Red Bloom (GB) (Selkirk).

Partnership Off To Flying Start With No Nay Never Rising Star In France

Craig Bernick and Haras d'Etreham's hitherto untested 2-year-old filly Les Pavots (Ire) (No Nay Never–Sparrow {Ire}, by Oasis Dream {GB}) was hammered down to 5-2 favouritism at the tills for Thursday's €30,000 Prix des Closeaux at Chantilly and returned home with a 'TDN Rising Star' badge after making all for an impressive success in the straight six-furlong newcomers' test. Breaking smartly to seize an immediate lead, she was in command throughout and kept on powerfully under pressure inside the final quarter-mile to easily outclass Freville (Fr) (Gleneagles {Ire}) by 3 1/2 lengths in taking fashion. Les Pavots becomes the seventh 'TDN Rising Star' for No Nay Never (Scat Daddy) and joins an honour roll which includes Ten Sovereigns (Ire) and Little Big Bear (Ire).

Nicolas de Chambure told TDN Europe that the partnership (Haras D'Etreham and Craig Bernick) had privately purchased three yearling fillies from Coolmore last year, one of which was Les Pavots.

“We do all these deals through Hubie De Burgh and it was a big team effort with Hubie and Craig to buy those fillies from Coolmore,” de Chambure said. “It's the first one of the three to race, and it's a great start to that partnership.”

The other fillies were also by No Nay Never, one out of Believe'N'Succeed (Aus) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) making her a half-sister to Anthony Van Dyck (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and the other is out of G1 Irish Oaks winner Bracelet (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}).

“Coolmore breed such brilliant horses, and it was great to be able to buy some of those well-bred fillies with long-term plans,” he added. “The filly out of Believe'N'Succeed is with Fabrice Chappet and the Bracelet filly is with Christophe Ferland.”

Les Pavots is the fifth of six foals and fourth scorer from as many runners produced by G3 Ballyogan S. third Sparrow (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}), herself out of G3 Middleton S. victrix and G1 Oaks second All Too Beautiful (Ire) (Sadler's Wells). All Too Beautiful, in turn, is a daughter of storied matriarch Urban Sea (Miswaki). The March-foaled chestnut is a half-sister to G1 Cox Plate and G1 Tancred S. hero Sir Dragonet (Ire) (Camelot {GB}), dual stakes-winning G3 Gordon S. and G3 N E Manion Cup placegetter Sir Lucan (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) and a yearling colt by Camelot (GB).

Harry Angel’s Marshman Makes All For Sigy Success

Nick Bradley Racing and Elaine Burke's Marshman (GB) (Harry Angel {Ire}–White Rosa {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}) had twice knocked on the door as a juvenile last year and delivered a first black-type triumph, tackling his third such contest, in Monday's G3 Prix Sigy at Chantilly. The Karl Burke trainee debuted with a six-furlong maiden win at Ayr in July, doubling up with an 8 1/2-length rout at Thirsk one month later, before running second in York's Aug. 19 G2 Gimcrack S. and a below-par fifth in Newmarket's Sept. 24 G1 Middle Park S. when last seen.

The well-backed 6-5 favourite broke sharply and raced on the front end from flagfall in this sophomore bow. Holding sway throughout, he was shaken up approaching the final furlong and kept on strongly under continued coaxing in the closing stages to easily hold the late threat of Irish raider Wodao (Fr) (Showcasing {GB}) by 1 1/4 lengths for a career high.

“He's a very nice horse and ran some lovely races last year, but we were a bit disappointed with his run in the Group 1,” the winning trainer said. “He was probably a little over the top at the end of a long season for him. Our horses haven't been running particularly well, we've had a bad six weeks and they're just beginning to come back now. It's a relief to get one of the good ones in and a win under our belt. He's a very good horse and will defintely come on for the run.”

Burke has prior experience of charting a passage from the Sigy to Royal Ascot's G1 Commonwealth Cup, via Haydock's G2 Sandy Lane, and he is eyeing the same winning path taken by former stable star Quiet Reflection (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) in 2016. “He is in the [G2] Duke of York at York [in May], but he will probably go for the Sandy Lane at Haydock, which is a stepping-stone race to the Commonwealth Cup. I won this race with Quiet Reflection, then she won the Sandy Lane and then won the Commonwealth Cup. Hopefully, this fellow can take the same route.”

Pedigree Notes
Marshman, half-brother to a 2-year-old colt by Zoustar (Aus) and a yearling colt by Mehmas (Ire), is the second of three foals and lone scorer produced by a winning daughter of G3 Sirenia S. victrix and G1 Cheveley Park S. second Dhanyata (Ire) (Danetime {Ire}). Dhanyata's siblings include the stakes-placed Guinea Hunter (Ire) (Pips Pride {GB}), the dam of G2 Gran Criterium third Gerrard's Quest (GB) (Captain Gerrard {Ire}) and the second dam of G1 Irish 2000 Guineas placegetter Decrypt (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}). Black-type descendants of another half-sister, Miss Brief (Ire) (Brief Truce), include Listed Prix du Cercle victrix Riskit Fora Biskit (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), G2 Gimcrack S. second and G2 Mill Reef S. third Crown Prosecutor (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) and the Group 3-placed duo Fox Trotter (Ire) (Bushranger {Ire}) and Mur Hiba (Ire) (Helmet {Aus}).
