Olympic Glory’s Shiffrin Dominates Prix de Conde Rivals

Haras d'Etreham's homebred Shiffrin (Ire) (Olympic Glory {Ire}–Scruples, by Pioneerof the Nile) followed up a pair of wins at Clairefontaine with a third on stakes bow in last month's Listed Criterium du Fonds Europeen de l'Elevage and stepped forward to notch a career best in Saturday's G3 Prix de Conde at Chantilly. In command after the initial strides, the 3-1 chance was last to come off the bridle in the straight and kept on strongly under a drive inside the final 300 metres to comfortably hold De Sica (Fr) (Demarchelier {GB}) by 1 1/2 lengths. Gold Index (Ire) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) finished a neck adrift in third.

“To win my first Group race here at Chantilly, I am almost speechless,” said trainer Nicolas Le Roch after registering a landmark success. “Thanks goes to my team at home and thanks also to Nicolas de Chambure. He is a super boss and I would not be here without him. We always loved this filly, even though she ran moderately first time out, but we kept the faith and all has gone well since. She did all we expected from her and all we had planned. She stays well, she had a great ride and she will come back for the [Oct. 22 G1] Criterium de Saint-Cloud.”

Pedigree Notes

Shiffrin, who becomes the ninth pattern-race winner for her sire, is the second of three foals and lone scorer out of Scruples (Pioneerof The Nile), herself an unraced half to G3 Gallinule S. victor Crossfirehurricane (Kitten's Joy) and Listed Patton S. victrix My Generation (Speightstown). The January-foaled bay's stakes-winning second dam Louvakhova (Maria's Mon), whose descendants include multiple stakes winner Jack And Noah (Fr) (Bated Breath {GB}), is a half-sister to GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf and G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches heroine Flotilla (Fr) (Mizzen Mast). Louvakhova is a daughter of G3 Prix Miesque winner Louvain (Ire) (Sinndar {Ire}), herself a half-sister to G1 Haydock Sprint Cup hero G Force (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}). Scruples has a yearling filly by Belardo (Ire) to come.

Le Havre’s Casapueblo A New ‘TDN Rising Star’ At Chantilly

Godolphin's €130,000 Arqana October acquisition Casapueblo (Ire) (Le Havre {Ire}–Uruguay {Ire}, by Authorized {Ire}) justified 7-5 favouritism by overcoming traffic issues and was elevated to the 'TDN Rising Star' ranks with a taking display in Wednesday's Prix de la Maniguette at Chantilly.

The eventual winner lobbed along in third through steady early stages, but slipped to fourth when brake-checked and impeded approaching halfway in this debut. Full of run along the rail when encountering heavy traffic passing the quarter-mile marker, he found an open lane inside the final 300 metres and unleashed a powerful turn of foot to win, going away, by a length from Ouro Preto (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}). Casapueblo becomes his sire's third Rising Star and he joins G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches and G1 Prix de Diane runner-up Commes (Fr) and G3 Prix de Guiche third Another Sky (Fr) on the list.

“He had been working well in the mornings and we hoped to see him confirm it on the racecourse,” said Godolphin's Louise Benard. “We really liked what we saw and no doubt he will stay further in due course. Anthony Stroud liked him at the Arqana October sale and bought him, even though this is not the type of horse Godolphin is looking at in a sale. It has paid off and we will now see what Mr Fabre wants to do with him.”

Casapueblo is the latest of five reported foals and fourth scorer from as many runners produced by a winning half-sister to MGSP sire Urban King (Ire) (Desert King {Ire}) and the dual stakes-placed Victoria College (Fr) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}). Victoria College, in turn, is the dam of G2 Prix Chaudenay and G3 Prix de Lutece placegetter Lucky Look (Fr) (Teofilo {Ire}), G3 Prix de Conde runner-up Millfield (Fr) (Whipper) and Listed Prix Volterra third La Poutanesca (Ire) (Falco). Casapueblo's G3 Premio Umbria-winning second dam Uruk (GB) (Efisio {GB}) is a half-sister to stakes-winning G3 Chester Vase and G3 September S. runner-up All The Aces (Ire) (Spartacus {Ire}). The April-foaled bay is a half-brother to G3 Prix Miesque victrix Dame Du Roi (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}).

Marshman Suffers Season-Ending Pelvic Injury

G3 Prix Sigy hero Marshman (GB) (Harry Angel {Ire}) has suffered a suspected pelvic injury after returning sore from a tune-up breeze last week for his intended outing in the G1 Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe S. and will be out for the rest of the season.

Conditioned by Karl Burke, the colt had won three of his nine career jumps and found his first Group black-type victory at Chantilly earlier this season in April when annexing the Prix Sigy. He had last been seen finishing eighth in Sandown's G3 Coral Charge S. in July but hopes were high as the return to York would've meant a return to a course at which he'd already put in two credit-worthy performances.

“He went for a breeze early last week and came back sore,” explained Nick Bradley, managing director of Nick Bradley Racing. “We sent him for a bone scan and it's not conclusive, but it looks like a suspected pelvic injury. I think that will be him done for the year. We'll bring him back next year. Three can be a hard age for sprinters, so we'll try again at four.”
