Belardo’s Lullaby Moon Powers To Miesque Triumph

Ralph Beckett trainee Lullaby Moon (GB) (Belardo {Ire) bagged two of her first three outings before hitting the board in Ayr’s Sept. 19 G3 Firth of Clyde Fillies’ S. and broke through for a first black-type success in Redcar’s Oct. 3 Listed Two-Year-Old Trophy last time. Sent postward as the 11-10 odds for Saturday’s G3 Prix Miesque at Chantilly, she overcame a troubled passage to justify favouritism and earn a career high in the seven-furlong contest. The eventual winner was swiftly into stride and on the lead early, but was shuffled back to race fifth along the rail as keener rivals set each other alight up front after the initial exchanges. Slipping down to seventh and boxed up along the far-side fence in the straight, she made smooth headway to seize the moment when an opening appeared inside the final quarter mile and quickened clear once seizing control with 150 metres remaining to register an ultimately emphatic two-length success from Asterella (Fr) (Olympic Glory {Ire).

Lullaby Moon, who becomes the third pattern-race winner for her freshman sire (by Lope de Vega {Ire}), is one of five scorers from as many runners and the lone stakes representative for Bold Bidder (GB) (Indesatchel {Ire}), herself kin to two black-type performers headed by Listed St Hugh’s S. third Right Answer (GB) (Lujain), who in turn produced the dual stakes-placed Galtymore Lad (GB) (Indesatchel {Ire}). Descendants of her third dam Aryaf (Vice Regent) include MGSW sire Mind Games (GB) (Puissance {GB}) and Listed Taby Open Sprint Championship third Better Built (GB) (Xaar {GB}). Bold Bidder, whose fourth dam is Irish 1000 Guineas heroine Front Row (Ire) (Epaulette {Ire}), has a yearling colt by Ribchester (Ire) and a colt foal by Washington DC (Ire) to come.

Gregorian’s Plainchant Makes All in the Criterium

Plainchant (Fr) (Gregorian {Ire}), who registered a May 17 debut third tackling five furlongs at La Teste de Buch, broke through over six furlongs back there in June and followed up with a first black-type score there once more in the July 26 Listed Criterium du Bequet. Narrowly defeated over six in Deauville’s Aug. 22 G3 Prix du Calvados, she returned with a five-length triumph in Chantilly’s Sept. 18 G3 Prix Eclipse and returned to that Paris venue to make all for a career high in Saturday’s G2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte. The even-money favourite was sharply into stride and seized immediate control of the straight dash. Sent clear either side of the quarter-mile marker, she was not for catching thereafter and kept on well under mild coaxing in the closing stages to comfortably hold the late rally of Go Athletico (Fr) (Goken {Fr}) by 3/4-of-a-length. The pair were seven lengths clear of the remainder, headed by Kalahara (GB) (Frankel {GB}).

Plainchant, half-sister to a yearling filly by Reliable Man (GB), is the sixth of seven foals and one of three scorers out of a winning half-sister to three black-type performers, namely G3 Prix de Sandringham winner Laugh Out Loud (GB) (Clodovil {Ire}), Listed Pinnacle S. and Listed Chalice S. victress Suzi’s Decision (GB) (Act One {GB}) and G3 Glorious S. third Baghdad (Fr) (Frankel {GB}). Laugh Out Loud is herself the dam of GII San Marcos S. and G3 Gallinule S. winner Platinum Warrior (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), from a family featuring G1 Derby Italiano-winning sire White Muzzle (GB) (Dancing Brave).

Bated Breath’s Makaloun Has Conde Rivals For Lunch

Fresh from victory in last month’s Listed Criterium du Fonds Europeen de l’Elevage going one mile at Deauville, His Highness The Aga Khan’s Makaloun (Fr) (Bated Breath {GB}) was in no mood to relinquish his perfect record and dominated all seven rivals in Monday lunchtime’s G3 Prix de Conde at Chantilly. He had debuted with a June 12 seven-furlong tally at Toulouse and doubled up over the same trip in a July 15 conditions heat at Mont-de-Marsan in his penultimate start. Breaking well to lead after the initial strides of this nine-furlong slog in deep mud, the 11-10 pick was never in danger on the front end and glided clear under mild coaxing inside the final quarter mile to easily outpoint Anasia (GB) (Intello {Ger}) by an impressive five lengths for a first pattern-race score. Kergrist (Fr) (Milanais {Fr}) was best of the rest and an additional four lengths adrift in third.

“This is a nice one, a real nice one,” proclaimed trainer Jean-Claude Rouget. “He has so many qualities and has showed speed earlier, that he stays and that he handles all types of ground. You can also make the running with him or adopt waiting tactics, he is the real deal. Today was very deep and he displayed a lovely fluent action. It’s nice to have a talented juvenile undefeated in four starts and, if all is well, he will have one more run this year in the [G1] Criterium de Saint Cloud.”

Makaloun is the latest of four foals and one of three winners from as many runners out of a dual-winning half-sister to Listed Prix Omnium II victor Markazi (Fr) (Dark Angel {Ire}). The May-foaled homebred’s fourth dam Mariyada (Diesis {GB}), from the immediate family of G1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches heroine Riverqueen (Fr) (Luthier {Fr}), is kin to G3 Prix d’Hedouville winner and G2 Prix Niel runner-up Malakim (Blushing Groom {Fr}) and also the granddam of Listed Fleur de Lys S. victress Mayonga (Ire) (Dr Fong).

What’s In a Name: Plainchant (Fr)

The very fast and now Group 3 winner 2-year-old filly Plainchant (Fr) (Gregorian {Ire}-Nadinska {GB}, by Doyen {Ire}) has a learned name straight out of the Early Middle Ages. “Plainchant is a form of medieval church music that involves chanting or words that are sung, without any instrumental accompaniment”, according to Wikipedia, and a Gregorian chant is its more popular and famous variation, often credited by legend to Pope Gregory I (590-604). The stallion Gregorian is by Clodovil (Ire), whose name may be an alteration or a reference to the name of Clovis, the first king of the Franks (died 511) and founder of the Merovingian dynasty (later maligned as les rois fainéants). This talented young filly is trained by Maurizio Guarnieri, a member of the up and coming group of Italian trainers in France–a migration phenomenon that, in general terms, is both new and old: some Latin cousins from beyond the Alps have historically done well in France. Napoleone Buonaparte, Amedeo Modigliani and Yves Montand come to mind.
