Chantal Sutherland ‘In A Zone’ With Five Straight Multi-Win Days At Gulfstream Park

Chantal Sutherland is riding a streak of five consecutive multi-win days at Gulfstream Park while continuing her inspired resurgence by climbing into second place in the jockey standings for the fall meeting.

“I feel like I am in a zone. I'm super-happy. When you have a lot of experience, you go to bed early, take care of your body,” the 46-year-old jockey who launched her career in her native Canada in 2000. “I live an actual boring life, other than racing. I'm so focused on racing. I'm so happy here. I'm in a good place.”

The multiple Grade 1 stakes-winning jockey with nearly 1150 career victories, has ridden 12 winners over the past five racing days at Gulfstream, including a pair of three-win days and three days with two winners.

Sutherland's winning mounts have produced a $12.30 average win payoff, by far the highest average in the Top 10 standings.

Sutherland, who had a four-win day Oct. 24, returned to Gulfstream after a long absence to ride full time during the Spring/Summer Meet, during which finished seventh with 46 winners. With her double on Sunday, Sutherland pulled into second place in the jockey standings with 22 winners, good for second behind perennial leader Edgard Zayas' 30 victories.

“I feel more into it. I'm watching the races, studying my replays. I'm so much more present to everyone and everything,” Sutherland said. “I'm trying to learn Spanish as fast as I can. Communication is everything. If a trainer can feel like they can communicate with me, they'll feel like I'm listening and giving 150 percent. I know how hard they work.”

Sutherland has ridden more winners in 2021 than in any year since 2010 while developing a rabid fan base at Gulfstream Park, where she is routinely greeted back to the winner's circle with cheers and applause and where she graciously grants fan requests for photos and selfies on her way back to the jockey's room.

“I'm just so grateful and proud,” Sutherland said. “It's so good to see everyone happy in racing. I love it here.”

Pudding Much The Best In Handicap At Gulfstream

During her five-plus years of training on her own, Elizabeth Dobles has demonstrated a deft hand in bringing out the best in old-warrior Thoroughbreds.

The proof was in Pudding Sunday at Gulfstream Park, in Hallandale Beach, Fla., where she saddled the 6-year-old gelding for late-rallying victory in the featured $60,000 handicap for older horses, three weeks after claiming him for $25,000 for herself.

Pudding's upset victory over odds-on favorite Double Crown in the six-furlong race for 3-year-olds and up was Dobles' second high-profile success of the weekend with a recent claim. Saturday, Dobles saddled Harry's Ontheloose for a triumph in Saturday's $60,000 Miami Beach Handicap at Gulfstream three starts after claiming the 5-year-old campaigner for $35,000 for Imaginary Stables LLC.

“Pudding caught my eye. He had won a couple in a row, and he had some back class. Those are the ones that I really get attracted to,” said Dobles, who has enjoyed success with veteran performers, War Story, Royal Squeeze and My Point Exactly, among others, in the past.

Pudding broke from the No. 1 post position and saved ground under Chantal Sutherland along the backstretch, as One Fast and Jackson contested the pace during the first quarter of a mile in :22.26 seconds. Double Crown, a multiple-stakes winner who has been graded stakes-placed twice, raced a few lengths behind the pace into the far turn before making a three-wide sweep to the lead on the turn into the homestretch, as Pudding remained trapped behind the tiring pacesetters at the top of the stretch.

Just as Double Crown appeared on his way to victory, Sutherland sent Pudding through an opening that had developed inside the 1/8th-pole, and the son of Two Step Salsa accelerated quickly to catch the favorite by three-quarters of a length.

“I thought we were in a horrible spot to be in, but when it opened up, it was heaven,” Dobles said.

Pudding ran six furlongs in a swift 1:09.94 to win his fourth straight race. Double Crown, who was ridden by Luca Panici, finished 2 ½ lengths clear of third-place finisher Tonalism.

Key Biscayne’s Win In Monroe Caps Four-Win Saturday For Sutherland

Arindel's Key Biscayne rallied from well off the pace to capture Saturday's $75,000 Monroe Stakes at Gulfstream Park, providing jockey Chantal Sutherland with her fourth victory of the day.

“I'm so grateful. I'm grateful to God, and I'm grateful to Gulfstream for being so amazing,” said Sutherland, who was greeted by an enthusiastic round of cheers from fans in the grandstand and on the apron upon her return to the winner's circle. “It's been really nice here.”

Riding for the first time during the Spring/Summer Meet at Gulfstream, Sutherland continued to make her presence felt Saturday with victories aboard Hot Babe ($5.20) in Race 3, Hard Ten ($2.80) in Race 8, and Clapton ($20.20) in Race 9 prior to her victory aboard Key Biscayne ($14.40) in the Race 10 feature. The 45-year-old native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, who has ridden more than 1100 winners during her career, sits seventh in the Spring/Summer Meet standings with 30 wins.

“I'm so happy it's worked out the way it did. Thanks to [trainer] Kenny McPeek, who helped me get fit to do this during the winter,” said Sutherland, who had taken time off due to the Covid-19 pandemic before galloping and breezing horses for McPeek during Gulfstream's Championship Meet.

Key Biscayne, who raced in tough stakes company on turf last year while finishing fourth in the Grade 2 Lake Placid, third in the Saratoga Oaks, and fifth in the Grade 1 Belmont Oaks Invitational, was hardly disadvantaged when the Monroe, a 1 1/16-mile race for fillies and mares, was transferred to the main track. The homebred 4-year-old daughter of Brethren was previously undefeated in two races transferred to dirt, having broken her maiden over a fast Gulfstream Park track and rolling to a dominating allowance victory at Belmont last year.

Key Biscayne settled of a solid early pace set by Thissmytime, the 3-5 favorite, who showed the way during fractions of :22.80 and 46.10 seconds for the first half-mile. Starship Nterprise made a strong move on the turn into the homestretch to pull alongside the tiring pacesetter and took a lead into the stretch. Meanwhile, Key Biscayne was making a three-wide sweep on the final turn to enter contention. Starship Nterprise, who captured the Martha Washington on turf last time out, kicked in nicely in the stretch but would prove unable to hold off the wide-and-driving Key Biscayne, who scored by a neck in her second start of the year.

“I had worked her and I worked another horse I've won on for Arindel. I loved how they worked,” said Sutherland. “I had so much confidence going into the race. I just love the way she handles everything.”

Key Biscayne ran the one-turn mile over a fast track in 1:36.90. Global Brand finished third, 2 ¼ lengths behind Starship Nterprise. Thissmytime finished fourth.

Key Biscayne and Clapton were two of three winners that were owned and bred by Arindel. They also won the fourth race with Gilligan.

Sutherland Logs Her 1,100th Career Win

After notching her 1,100th career victory Sunday at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla., Chantal Sutherland had no doubts whatsoever that she had made the right career choice when she opted to return to South Florida to ride full time during the Spring/Summer Meet.

The multiple Grade 1 stakes-winning jockey, who rode Kathy Mongeon-trained Anonymous Source ($34) for a rallying victory in Race 3, has certainly been well received by horsemen and fans alike.

“I'm very grateful to Kathy and all the trainers who are supporting me. I love Gulfstream. Everyone is amazing,” said Sutherland, while making her way to the jockey's room, stopping several times to accommodate fans' requests for selfies. “This is a special day to win 1100 because it's Sunday. I went to church this morning. I was hoping, but I didn't ask for it. I just said I want to have a safe, wonderful day.”

The 45-year-old native of Windsor, Canada has ridden 16 winners while being supported by a wide range of trainers during the Spring/Summer Meet.

“I love it here. It feels a lot like L.A. I feel like California is really my home, but not much anymore. I love Canada, but it's too cold,” Sutherland said. “I love Florida, and Gulfstream's amazing.”
