Champs Elysees Filly Tops Tattersalls Ireland August NH Sale

A 3-year-old filly by the late Champs Elysees (GB) brought a sale-topping €50,000 from Jeremiah McGrath during Thursday's Tattersalls Ireland August NH Sale. Nina Carberry's Broad Meadow Stables consigned lot 519, who hails from the family of Australian champion Jeune (GB) (Kalaglow {Ire}).

“This is a well-bred filly,” said McGrath. “She has been bought for trainer Lucy Wadham. She trains the Fame And Glory half-sister Game On For Glory, who finished second in a bumper at the Cheltenham April meeting, they think a lot of her. This is a cracking model with some size and scope.”

At the end of Thursday's trade, 170 lots (67%) sold from 254 offered. The gross was €1,062,650, while the average was €6,251 (-27%). The median was €4,500 (-25%).

Tattersalls Ireland CEO Simon Kerins said, “The Derby Sale registering a record average and median, as well as a clearance rate of 86% and 24 horses who sold for over €100,000, was a real highlight and a positive reflection on the premier quality of the Derby Sale and its' graduates who continually perform at the very highest level.

“The sale's top lot, the son of Walk In The Park bought by Noel and Valerie Moran's Bective Stud for €280,000, is this year's most expensive Store horse sold in Britain and Ireland.

“This week's May Store Sale also broke records with its best-ever clearance rate and its' first six-figure sale–a son of Blue Bresil, sold by Rathbarry Stud, bought by agent Aiden Murphy for €115,000, while the new July Store Sale, despite all of this year's difficulties, got off to a strong start with a session of highly satisfactory trade and a top price of €50,000.

“There was an extensive range of buyers involved across all the sales and at all levels, and horses were bought in numbers by Irish and English trainers and agents, new Irish and British-based owners and breeders, as well as point-to-point consignors, who have reinvested as strongly as ever.

“I would like to express gratitude to our clients who have been incredibly patient and supportive throughout, and we can all look forward to a return to the original sales calendar in 2022.”

Way To Paris and Yafta Have Their First Mares In Foal

Group 1 winner Way To Paris (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}) has his first mares scanned in foal, Coolagown Stud announced on Monday. The winner of the G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud covered Cliff Avenue (Ire) (Canford Cliffs {Ire}), herself out of G3 Prix de Lutece victress Street Shaana (Fr) (Darshaan {GB}); Greatest Dancer (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}), a half-sister to stakes-placed Perfect Casting (Diesis {GB}); and MSW Trip To Glory (Fr) (Where Or When {Ire})'s daughter Wadacre (GB) (Camelot {GB}), with the trio carrying to the charismatic grey.

“Way To Paris has settled into his new home and taken to his job very well, and is showing particularly good libido,” said Coolagown's David Stack. “He has proven very popular and has a high number of bookings, which isn't surprising as he's a big, good-walking horse. Everyone who has seen him has loved him.”

Also a winner of a brace of Group 2s, Way To Paris stands for €3,500 at Coolagown in 2021.

Another first-season sire with his first mares in foal is Group 3 hero Yafta (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}) at Haras de Saint Arnoult. Idiosa (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}), from the family of German Group 1 winner Temida (Ire) (Oratorio {Ire}); and the French stakes-placed Marvellous Night (Fr) (Captain Marvelous {Ire}) were both scanned in foal, the stud announced on Monday.

“It's surprising to see that a new stallion such as Yafta, who is one could say a “budget” sire, manages to attract mares of such high quality for his first covering season,” said Haras de Saint Arnoult's Larissa Kneip of the €2,500 first-season sire. “There is quantity, with over 50 bookings by now, as well as quality. Yafta has got the looks, the pedigree and the performances which a speed sire needs all rolled into one-and that attracts breeders more and more here in France.”

Billesdon Brook to Visit Dubawi

Classic heroine and MG1SW Billesdon Brook (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}-Coplow {GB}, by Manduro {Ger}) will visit Darley stallion Dubawi (Ire), Racing Post reported on Sunday. Retired after her eighth-place finish in defense of her G1 Kingdom of Bahrain Sun Chariot S. in October, the Richard Hannon trainee was named an English highweight at seven to 9 ½ furlongs in 2019.

“Billesdon Brook is going to Dubawi, I know it's expensive but I think she deserves it, so I'm just waiting for her to be ready to go off to Newmarket,” owner Jeanette McCreery told Racing Post of the 2018 G1 1000 Guineas heroine. “I'd always thought I'd send her to Dubawi, I think he's a wonderful stallion so I thought 'why not', she deserves the best. She hurt herself in the last race she ran in, it was very wet in the Sun Chariot. She's been home, had box rest, now she's out in the paddock and is fine, so we've something to look forward to in a couple of years anyway.”

A winner of seven of her 26 starts with 10 more placed runs and earnings of $982,087, the chestnut also scored in a trio of Group 3s.

Way To Paris ‘a Real Coup for Irish Breders’

The evergreen Way To Paris (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}-Grey Way, by Cozzene), who has proved better than ever this year, is finally to relinquish the service of his venerable owner Paolo Ferrario on the racetrack for a fresh start at Coolagown Stud in 2021.

The popular grey, who has one last assignment in the G1 Japan Cup later this month, made a deserved Group 1 breakthrough this summer in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, having failed by just a head to run down subsequent Arc winner Sottsass (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) in the G1 Prix Ganay on his previous start. But he had already extended an unbroken seam of high-class form through five seasons and, backed up by one of the most aristocratic families in the American Stud Book, will go to market as a highly eligible heir to his much-lamented sire.

The deal to stand Way To Paris in Co. Cork was brokered by Richard Venn, who extended his thanks to Ferrario’s manager Paolo Picchi “for making the dream a reality.”

The agent added, “Way To Paris had been on my radar for some time. As you can imagine, we had to fight off determined interest from several French studs. So to start off his stud career in Ireland is a real coup for Irish breeders. As his race record shows, he is a sound, consistent and talented individual at the highest level. In addition, he is an exceptional looker and has an excellent pedigree–he could be very interesting for Flat mares as well.”

Way To Paris will be launched at €3,500, live foal, with a 50% concession for fillies. “His introductory fee really reflects what is currently going on in the world,” Venn said. “And the ramifications it is having on our industry.”

Way To Paris, bred by the Vittadini family of Grundy fame, is certainly eligible to prove influential in both codes. His sire, of course, belonged to one of the most remarkable group of siblings in the history of the breed; and his third dam is a full sister to champion Numbered Account. This is the Ogden Phipps family that has also produced Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver (Maria’s Mon) and important earlier stallions in Woodman and Private Account. His first four dams, moreover, are by Cozzene, Nureyev, Buckpasser and Swaps, so really his genes are inlaid with Classic quality.

His own mother was herself a Group 2 winner in Italy, where she was anointed champion 3-year-old filly, and had already produced a dual Group 1 winner in Distant Way (Distant View). Significantly, while that horse registered his elite wins over 10 furlongs at the ages of five and six, he was already posting high-class form at three when a strong-finishing fourth of 15 in the G1 Derby Italiano. So the template was there for his half-brother.

Carrying the yellow and light blue silks long esteemed in his homeland, through Scuderia Fert, Way To Paris has banked over £560,000 in prizemoney. In the hands of trainer Andrea Marcialis, and previously his father Antonio, Way To Paris has maintained his soundness and zest in beating 13 individual Group 1 winners while himself winning or placing 15 times at group level; and 21 times from 36 starts overall. Perhaps his most flamboyant performance came in May, when he stormed home by 4 1/2 lengths in the G2 Grand Prix de Chantilly.

Pierre-Charles Boudot, who rode him that day and most of this season, said, “Way To Paris a strong horse who stays well and has a great turn of foot. He is a beautiful individual, a handsome grey with a lovely coat and a powerful physique. He is a determined horse who handles all types of going. His strength is in his acceleration in a finish.”

Champs Elysees, who sired elite winners on the Flat in Billesdon Brook (GB) and Trip To Paris (Ire), died in 2018 after his transfer to Castlehyde Stud had been avidly subscribed. Little wonder if Coolagown Stud manager David Stack is so enthused about his new recruit.

“I’m very grateful to Mr. Ferrario and Mr. Picchi for entrusting Way To Paris to Coolagown,” he said. “When you speak to breeders they are looking for tough, honest, sound consistent horses and Way to Paris epitomised all these traits. If his offspring get a hint of his class and durability, then he will be a top-class sire.

“He’s also a gorgeous-looking horse who stands 16.1 hands and has a wonderful temperament. I can’t wait to show him off to breeders.”
