John Gosden Crowned Champion Trainer

John Gosden was on Monday named champion flat trainer for the third year running and fifth time overall. Gosden’s runners earned £3,114,226 on the racecourse in 2020, more than £650,000 ahead of Aidan O’Brien. Gosden’s stable took home seven Group 1 trophies this year, including a third win in the G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. for Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) and for Stradivarius (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) in the G1 Gold Cup at Royal Ascot.

“I would like to thank all of my staff for all of their endeavours in this most difficult of years,” Gosden told Great British Racing. “My thanks to our owners, who have been so supportive, and to the whole racing industry for pulling together so effectively.”

Sheikh Hamdan was named champion owner, his flagbearers including the Gosden-trained G1 Falmouth S. and G1 Sun Chariot S. scorer Nazeef (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), G1 King’s Stand S. and G1 Nunthorpe S. winner Battaash (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and G1 Sussex S. scorer Mohaather (GB) (Showcasing {GB}). Sheikh Hamdan’s prizemoney total in 2020 was £2,309,194 from 112 wins.

Sheikh Hamdan’s racing manager Angus Gold said, “To win the champion owner title is a fantastic achievement for everyone involved, it’s what we all work hard for and strive to achieve. It’s been a difficult year for everyone, but we have been blessed on the track this year with some amazing horses. While it was sad for Sheikh Hamdan not being able to come over to the likes of Royal Ascot to see them in the flesh, he is incredibly enthusiastic, and winning the champion owner title means the world to him and all the team.”

Ben Curtis took the 2020 annual flat jockeys’ title with 170 wins. Curtis won a pair of Group 3s in June before a career high with Dandalla (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}) in the G3 Albany S. at Royal Ascot, on whom he also won the G2 Duchess of Cambridge S. the following month.

“Given the lockdown in March, I set out to pass the 100 winners mark, so to have surpassed that along with the many other talented jockeys in the weighing room at the moment, such as Hollie [Doyle] and Tom [Marquand], is a great achievement,” he said. “For us to have reached those figures, all things considered, is fantastic for British racing.”

Magical 1000 Wins For Moreira

Hong Kong champion jockey Joao ‘Magic Man’ Moreira became only the third jockey in Hong Kong history to ride 1,000 winners on the island. The Brazilian was successful aboard Incanto Prepared (NZ) (Per Incanto) in the Class 4 Uranus H. over 1650 metres at Happy Valley on Wednesday. He joins 13-time champion Douglas Whyte (1813) and fellow champion Zac Purton (1209) in this elite millennial club.

“I can only describe it as a dream come true because I never dreamed that, to be honest, and I would never think that I could get to that mark in Hong Kong, knowing the place is such a tough place,” Moreira told the Hong Kong Jockey Club notes team. “I didn’t get there by myself–I had great support behind my back, pushing forward in all ways.

“Of course, good horses make the jockeys’ life much easier and I would describe the horses as the ones who make my life such a special life. I really enjoy doing what I do and I’m very pleased and glad to get to such a mark, a mark I never dreamed to get to–it’s very meaningful.

“I must dedicate this to my family, my wife [Taciana], my kids, my brothers and sisters and my mum, who are no doubt cheering for me to get to this mark and without their support, I would say I could never reach to this mark. Support is always the main thing behind the scenes.”

Moreira currently is on top of the Hong Kong jockey standings with 56 wins this season. Earlier in his career, he hit the 1000-win mark in South America, and was also a four-time Singapore champion reinsman from 2010-2013. He earned his first Hong Kong laurel in 2014/15 and repeated twice more so far, in 2015/16 and 2016/17.

Oisin Murphy Crowned Britain’s Champion Jockey For Second Straight Year

Oisin Murphy signed off his British racing campaign with a double at Southwell Racecourse on Tuesday, Nov. 3 and it has proved enough to win him a second jockey's title.

The 25-year-old Irishman finishes the season on 142 winners, maintaining a healthy lead over his closest challenger William Buick until the very end.

On winning a second successive Champion Flat Jockey title, Murphy said: “I'm incredibly proud to have won a second Champion Jockey title and I'm extremely thankful for the team around me that have enabled me to do so – my agent, manager, driver, form-man, and family.

“It's huge to win two jockeys' championships in two years and beyond my wildest dreams. I tried my absolute best to do so and thank you to everyone who has helped along the way.

“I'm particularly proud of my strike rate for Andrew Balding. Sheikh Fahad allowed me to go wherever I wanted to and for that I must thank him and all the team at Qatar Racing too.”

Amongst his 142 wins, Oisin Murphy claimed his maiden Classic success when securing the QIPCO 2000 Guineas with Kameko in a scintillating performance.

In total, Murphy claimed seven UK Group wins this season and earned over £2.2 million in prize money. His top performing racecourse has been Kempton Park where he has enjoyed 16 wins.

Amongst the personal milestones achieved by jockeys this season, Murphy claimed his 1000th British winner Perfect Sign at Southwell Racecourse.

Oisin Murphy Earns Second Champion Jockey Title

Last year’s champion jockey Oisin Murphy earned his second crown with 142 wins in 2020. William Buick closed to within nine wins, but could ultimately not make up the deficit at Newcastle on Friday. Murphy is currently at the Breeders’ Cup meeting at Keeneland. The retained rider for Qatar Racing, Murphy booted home Kameko (Kitten’s Joy) in the G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas in June.

“I’m incredibly proud to have won a second champion jockey title and I’m extremely thankful for the team around me that have enabled me to do so–my agent, manager, driver, form-man, and family,” Murphy told Great British Racing. “It’s huge to win two jockeys’ championships in two years and beyond my wildest dreams. I tried my absolute best to do so and thank you to everyone who has helped along the way.

“I’m particularly proud of my strike rate for Andrew Balding. Sheikh Fahad allowed me to go wherever I wanted to and for that I must thank him and all the team at Qatar Racing too.”

Cieren Fallon won his second consecutive champion apprentice jockey title. It was the first time an apprentice earned back-to-back titles in 32 years. Fallon’s highlight was undoubtably Oxted (GB) (Mayson {GB}) in the G1 July Cup. Fallon is the retained second jockey for Qatar Racing.

“It’s an amazing achievement for me, it is something I set out to do after the success of last year,” said Fallon. “I’ve been very lucky to have the people I have around me to help me achieve these goals–my jockey coach, nutritionist, a great boss in Sheikh Fahad, William and Maureen Haggas, my mum and dad.

“They are all the best at what they do, so I’m very lucky to be in the position. Winning the July Cup with Oxted is obviously the greatest highlight of my year and a memorable day.”
