Flurry Of Breeders’ Cup Potentials Work At Keeneland Saturday

Seven horses with aspirations to compete in the Nov. 5-6 Breeders' Cup World Championships – including four stakes winners during Keeneland's Fall Stars Weekend on the opening weekend of the Fall Meet – worked over a turf course labeled good Saturday morning at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Ky.

Peter Brant's Blowout (GB), winner of the Grade 1 First Lady Presented by UK HealthCare and a candidate for the $2 million Grade 1 Maker's Mark Filly and Mare Turf on Nov. 6, worked a half-mile on her own in :50.80 for trainer Chad Brown.

Phoenix Thoroughbred III's Tiz the Bomb, winner of the Grade 2 Castle & Key Bourbon and a candidate for the $1 million Grade 1 Juvenile Turf on Nov. 5, worked five furlongs on his own in 1:01.80 for trainer Kenny McPeek.

Also working for McPeek was Arriba Arequipa's Reina de Mollendo (ARG) who covered five furlongs in 1:06.40 on her own in preparation for a possible Filly and Mare Turf start.

Trainer Wesley Ward worked a trio of runners headed by Mrs. John Magnier, Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith, and Westerberg's Golden Pal, winner of the Grade 2 Woodford Presented by TVG.

Winner of last fall's Grade 2 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint and a candidate for this year's $1 million Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint, Golden Pal drilled five furlongs in 1:00.80 with splits of :24.20, :37.20, :49, and 1:00.80. (Click here for a video of the work.)

Other Ward workers were Hat Creek Racing's Averly Jane, winner of the Indian Summer Presented by Keeneland Select, and Gregory Kaufman's Kaufymaker, second in the Indian Summer. Working together for possible starts in the $1 million Juvenile Turf Sprint, the undefeated Averly Jane covered five furlongs in 1:03.40 and Kaufymaker went the distance in 1:03.80.

Calumet Farm's Channel Cat, prepping for a possible second start in the $4 million Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Turf, worked five furlongs on his own in 1:02.20 with splits of :25.20, :38.60, :50.40 and 1:02.20 for trainer Jack Sisterson.

Three other possible Breeders' Cup runners posted works on the fast main track.

Also working for Calumet and Sisterson was Lexitonian, who covered 5 furlongs in 1:00.60. Winner of the Grade 1 Alfred G. Vanderbilt two starts back, Lexitonian is a candidate for the $2 million Grade 1 Qatar Racing Breeders' Cup Sprint.

Peter Brant's Dunbar Road, runner-up to Letruska in the Grade 1 Juddmonte Spinster, worked a half-mile in :49 for trainer Chad Brown in preparation for a likely third start in the $2 million Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1).

Dare To Dream Stable's American Sanctuary, fourth in the Grade 1 Claiborne Breeders' Futurity, worked a half-mile in :48.40 for trainer Chris Davis. He is possible for the $2 million TVG Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) Presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance.

Ghostzapper Filly Impresses at Keeneland

7th-Keeneland, $83,921, Msw, 10-22, 3yo/up, f/m, 6f, 1:09.85, ft, 8 1/2 lengths.
GOODNIGHT OLIVE (f, 3, Ghostzapper–Salty Strike {MGSW, $485,266}, by Smart Strike) was second as 11-5 chalk at Keeneland back at Gulfstream in March, and proved worth the wait Friday with an impressive belated maiden breaker. Backed as the 2-5 chalk facing mostly firsters and a couple who had had plenty of chances, the FTKOCT grad showed good speed to vie for early command before being taken back adeptly by Tyler Gaffalione to let the top two go at it down the backside. She ranged up again out in the clear to under very confident handling into the stretch, and poured it on when called upon to run up the score to a widening 8 1/2 lengths. Newcomer Oscarette (Firing Line) was best of the rest. The winner's dam was a MGSW sprinter/miler who was acquired by Stonestreet for $800,000 at the 2013 Keeneland January sale. Public Sector Leads Brown Hill Prince Trio

Trainer Chad Brown will saddle a trio of runners–led by 5-2 morning-line favorite Public Sector (GB) (Kingman {GB})–in Saturday's GII Hill Prince S. at Belmont.

Second behind subsequent GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf upsetter Fire At Will (Declaration of War) in Belmont's GII Pilgrim S. last fall, the Klaravich Stables runner enters riding a hot hand off consecutive graded wins in Saratoga's GII National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame S. Aug. 6 and a one-length score over the re-opposing Never Surprised (Constitution) in the GIII Saranac S. Sept. 4.

Brown will also tighten the girth on Saratoga last out Better Talk Now S. winner Sifting Sands (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) and Monmouth's Tale of the Cat S. winner and Saranac fifth Founder (Upstart).

Soldier Rising (GB) (Frankel {GB}), drawn widest of all in post 11, figures to vie for favoritism following second-place finishes going longer in his first two starts on these shores in the 1 3/16-miles GI Saratoga Derby Invitational S. Aug. 7 and 1 1/2-miles Jockey Club Derby Invitational S. at Belmont Sept. 18.

MGISW Raging Bull to Gainesway in 2022

Multiple Grade I winner Raging Bull (Fr) (Dark Angel {Ire}–Rosa Bonheur, by Mr. Greeley) will stand the 2022 season at Gainesway Farm following his retirement from racing. The winner of this season's GI Maker's Mark Mile is expected to make his final start in the GI Breeders' Cup Mile. Raging Bull will enter stud in 2022 with an advertised fee of $10,000 LFSN.

“Raging Bull is a knockout physically,” said Gainesway General Manager Brian Graves. “His six triple digit Beyer speed figures and his performances over 14 Grade I events are impressive. His sire, Dark Angel, has become one of the most influential sires in International racing.”

Included among his black-type victories at three, Raging Bull took the GII National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame S., GIII Saranac S. and Del Mar's GI Hollywood Derby. At four, he made five starts, all in Grade I company, placing in the GI Manhattan S., GII Fourstardave H. and GI Woodbine Mile. The Chad Brown trainee returned last season to capture the Shoemaker Mile in addition to placing in the Maker's Mark Mile and GI Shadwell Turf Mile S. at Keeneland.

“Raging Bull (FR) is the best-looking horse I have ever trained,” said Brown. “He has run fast numbers at many different tracks, winning Grade I's in three different years, the ultimate confirmation of incredible soundness.”

Bred by Dayton Investments Limited, he was campaigned by by Peter Brant. The French-bred accounted for seven wins from 21 lifetime starts, encompassing 18 consecutive starts in graded stakes company, and finishing in the top three in nine of 14 Grade I events.

“I am extremely bullish on his chances at stud. We are excited to be partnering with Gainesway on Raging Bull and will be supporting him strongly with our mares,” said Brant.
