Medaglia d’Oro Filly Delahaye Impressively Wires Gulfstream Allowance

5th-Gulfstream, $72,000, Alw (NW1$X), Opt. Clm ($25,000), 1-31, 4yo/up, f/m, 1 1/16mT, 1:40.88, fm, 1 1/4 lengths.
DELAHAYE (f, 4, Medaglia d'Oro–Bella Carina, by War Front) sat a no-cover trip three and four wide on her debut over this course last February, but jockey Javier Castellano lost the crop with judgment day approaching and the filly went down to a narrow defeat behind the future MSP Love Appeals (Speightstown). Away for 8 1/2 months thereafter, the $550,000 Keeneland September yearling raced more prominently in an Aqueduct maiden and shot clear late to graduate by a handy 3 1/4 lengths at 65 cents on the dollar when last seen Nov. 5. Favored here at an arguably overlaid 9-10 and carrying the Three Chimneys colors for the first time, Delahaye tugged her way to the front without expending much energy and led her rivals along through sedate fractions of :24.01 and :48.92. Castellano sat hard against Delahaye around the turn, cut the ribbons once heads were turned for home and she easily held sway to the wire. She covered her final 2 1/2 furlongs in :28.20 and sprinted the final sixteenth in a very slick :5.50. Delahaye is the ninth winner worldwide from 11 runners bred on this cross, a number that includes the stakes winners Ticker Tape Home and Golden Canary. Ben Leon's Besilu Stables acquired the stakes-winning second dam Grand Prayer (Grand Slam) in foal to Medaglia d'Oro for an even $1 million from the Ned Evans dispersal at Keeneland November in 2011, a little more than a year after the mare's daughter Malibu Prayer (Malibu Moon) won the GI Ruffian H. for Evans and Mark Hennig. Grand Prayer's value appreciated further still when her Medaglia d'Oro foal of 2010, Valid, became a three-time graded winner and Grade I-placed on the dirt. Malibu Prayer is also the dam of the MGSP Grand Love, whose sire Gun Runner is out of Quiet Giant (Giant's Causeway), a $3-million purchase by Besilu from the same dispersal. Leon also paid a sales-topping $8.5 million for champion Royal Delta (Empire Maker). Bella Carina is the dam of a 2-year-old Not This Time colt that was bought back on a bid of $350,000 at Keeneland September last fall and a yearling colt by Gun Runner. She was not bred last season. Jan. 21 Insights: From Florida to California, Big Pedigrees Galore

RABDAH (Constitution), a half-sister to GSW-Eng Toro Strike (Toronado {Ire}), debuts here for Todd Pletcher and Al Shaqab Racing. Hailing from the immediate female line of Scarlet Tango (French Deputy), who tallies GISW Tara's Tango (Unbridled's Song), herself dam of GSW Capensis (Tapit); GISW Visionaire (Grand Slam); and the dam of SP Ignitis (Nyquist), among others, Rabdah has been given an 8-1 morning line appraisal with jose Ortiz in the irons.

To her outside is Segesta (Ghostzapper), a homebred for Juddmonte, who is out of GI Just A Game victress Antonoe (First Defense). Hailing from a busy European family, and trained by Chad Brown, the filly picks up the riding talents of Irad Ortiz Jr.. TJCIS PPs.

Racing in the colors of John Gunther and Eurowest Bloodstock, TIME STONE (American Pharoah) debuts for the Cherie DeVaux barn in the second of two turf maidens on the card. Out of an unplaced daughter of G1SW-Eng Timepiece (GB) (Zamindar), she's been working steadily at Palm Meadows and before that at Keeneland, albeit over the main track. Time Stone will break from the rail and is 12-1 on the morning line. This is the female family of European champion Twice Over (GB).

On the other end of the gate will go Investment Process (English Channel) for the powerhouse Klaravich-Chad Brown combination. A full-sister to SW Malleymoo, she was a $210,000 FTKOCT yearling purchase in 2022, and her two other siblings to start on the turf have also been winners. This is the family of two-time European champion, and multiple Highweight New Approach (Ire) through his unraced half-sister Park Heiress (Ire). TJCIS PPs.

Late for his debut, but on the cusp of finally getting his career started here, PROSPER (City of Light) will go to post for John Sadler and the ownership group of Talla Racing, West Point Thoroughbreds, and Woodford Racing. A $1.7-million KEESEP pick up three years ago, the 4-year-old has a hefty worktab to his credit and all of them at this track. A half-brother to GSW Abaan (Will Take Charge) and GSP Chip Leader (Giant's Causeway), Prosper is 5-2 on the morning line. This is the family of MGSW & GISP Broken Vow, a leading broodmare sire in Korea since his export, and champion grass mare MGISW Forever Together (Belong to Me). TJCIS PPs.

7th-SA, $65k, Msw, 3yo, f, 6f, 6:41p.m. ET
Carrying the colors of Natalie Baffert and trained by Bob Baffert, BONAQUA (Tonalist) will open her career in this main track dash. A $250,000 KEESEP buy, the filly has been putting up noteworthy efforts in the morning with her most recent being a 4 panel work from the gate in :48 flat (4/91) with the notes describing it as 'handily'. Her dam Ma Mo (Uncle Mo) is a half-sister to MSW Swag Daddy (Scat Daddy) as well as GSP What a Tale (Tale fo the Cat) and SP Anjorie (A. P Jet), herself the dam of SW Fierce Lady (Competitive Edge) and SP Bluegrass Jamboree (Bluegrass Cat).

To the outside of that one will be Show Card (Into Mischief), the Juddmonte homebred hailing from the extended 'TDN Rising Star' family of two-time champion MGISW Malathaat (Curlin) and her full-sister GSW & GISP Julia Shining. The second dam SP Dream Sweeper is a half-sister to Dream Rush, the start of that remarkable line, and Show Card's winning dam is herself a half-sister to MSP Dreams to Reality (Lookin at Lucky). Book-ending the field is MyRacehorse or Platts's runner Simply Enchanting (Byquist), a $475,000 KEESEP buy who is a half to MGSW & MGISP Envoutante (Uncle Mo). TJCIS PPs.

Saturday Insights: Baffert Stablemates Star At Santa Anita

1st-SA, $65K, Msw, 3yo, 6 1/2f, 3:30 p.m.

A pair of pricey Bob Baffert stablemates make their anticipated debuts Saturday to open the card at Santa Anita. NORMANDY LANDING (Gun Runner), out of a daughter of MGISW and Kentucky Oaks heroine Flute (Seattle Slew), brought $1,050,000 from the 'Avengers' as a yearling at Keeneland. Dam Perfect Flute, who has already produced this runner's winning full-sibling, is herself a half to GSW/MGISP Filimbi (Mizzen Mast) and to the dams of GSW Current (Curlin) and GISW Weep No More (Mineshaft).

He'll break outside of stablemate Maymun (Frosted), a successful pinhook who brought a top-five price of $900,000 from Zedan Racing Stables at last year's OBS April sale after selling for just $50,000 as a yearling at Keeneland the year prior. The son of Frosted seems to have plenty of speed, tuning up for this debut with a best-of-65 drill Jan. 13 (four furlongs in :47).

Attempting to split the pair is second-time starter Mc Vay (Constitution), a $1.25m FTSAUG yearling himself who ran greenly in his Del Mar debut behind Wine Me Up (Vino Rosso) Sept. 2. He removes the blinkers in this spot for trainer John Shirreffs. TJCIS PPS

On the East Coast, Coinvest (City of Light) brings yet another million-dollar price tag on the day for Todd Pletcher and the partnership of Repole Stable, St. Elias Stable and West Point Thoroughbreds. The $1.1m KEESEP grad will seek to emulate the success of his half-siblings including MGSW/MGISP Wit (Practical Joke) and GSW Barkley (Munnings).

Opposing him is $600,000 KEESEP yearling and stablemate Linesman (Uncle Mo) along with Peter Brant's European invader Zapata (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) for trainer Chad Brown. TJCIS PPS

Kicking off Lecomte day at the Fair Grounds, Kentucky West Racing homebred Saint Damasus (Justify) debuts for trainer Kenneth McPeek. The colt is a half to GI Caesars Belmont Derby Invitational winner Classic Causeway (Giant's Causeway).

He'll face second-time starter Hall of Fame (Gun Runner), a $1.4m FTSAUG yearling who ran second as the beaten favorite in his Churchill debut Nov. 26 for Steve Asmussen. TJCIS PPS

In the final maiden special weight of the day at Fair Grounds, Exploration (Curlin) starts for a lengthy partnership led by Spendthrift Farm. The $900,000 KEESEP yearling is out of a half to GISW Tara's Tango (Unbridled's Song), who went on to produce GIII New Kent County Virginia Derby winner Capensis (Tapit). This is also the family of GI NetJets King's Bishop S. winner Visionaire (Grand Slam), GSW Scarlet Fusion (Curlin) and GSW/MGISP Scarlet Strike (Smart Strike).

He'll face Godolphin homebred Cornishman (Curlin), a son of GSW/MGISP Penwith (Bernardini). Second dam Composure (Touch Gold), purchased by Godolphin for $3.6m out of KEENOV in 2003, is also responsible for MGISP Centring (A.P. Indy) and GISP Tranquil Manner (A.P. Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance Thanks Supporters Of The Holiday Giving Campaign

From Nov. 28 through Dec. 31, Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance collected over $200,000 in donations from its 2023 Holiday Giving Campaign to raise funds to support thousands of Thoroughbreds at 86 TAA-accredited organizations, the non-profit said in a release Wednesday.

The Holiday Giving Campaign highlighted a different match sponsor each day, offering single-day sponsorships ranging from $500 to $10,000. 2023 Match Sponsors included: Mike Rogers, Reeves Thoroughbred Racing, Yvonne Schwabe, National HBPA, Denali Stud, Siena Farm, Donna Barton Brothers, Jack Damico, West Point Thoroughbreds, Rick Schosberg, Simon Bray, Dan & Denny Piazza and Matt & Amy Webber, Ramiro Restrepo, Dr. Bonnie Comerford, Three Diamonds Farm, Kurtis Coady & Megan Devine, Donato Lanni, Chad Brown, Springhouse Farm, Bloom Racing Stable, StarLadies Racing, The Honorable Earle I. Mack, Jen Roytz & Dr. Stuart Brown, St. Elias Stables, David Anderson, Matthew DeSantis, and Bob & Jill Baffert.
