Arqana December Topper Rougir Runs by Them All in Beaugay

Peter Brant and Chad Brown enjoyed a productive GI Kentucky Derby week with victories in the GIII Modesty S. and GII Churchill Distaff Turf Mile S., and they picked up right where they left off Saturday with Michael Tabor getting in on the action.

Having repeatedly come out on the wrong end of blanket finishes last year while campaigned by trainer Cedric Rossi and Le Haras de La Gousserie, Rougir got her nose down on the line in the G1 Prix de l'Opera Longines at ParisLongchamp Oct. 3 before settling for seventh after a rough journey in the GI Breeders' Cup F/M Turf Nov. 6. She returned to France to top Arqana's December Breeding Stock sale at €3,000,000, and was looking to become the third seven-figure buy from that auction to run back and win, following in the hoofsteps of her Distaff Turf Mile-winning stablemate Speak of the Devil (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) (€1.95 million) and G3 Prix Allex France Longines heroine Grand Glory (GB) (Olympic Glory {Ire}) (€2.5 million).

Dropping out the back early as is typical of this type, Rougir began to inch closer while three deep after a sluggish :52.13 half. She continued to build momentum after six furlongs in 1:16.24, and showed off her closing kick to run up the score.

“I was thrilled with her race,” said Brown. “She showed a nice turn of foot that she shows us in the morning. It certainly looks like she'll stretch out fine. She's proven at a mile and a quarter previously and I think that's where she's headed. We'll take a look at running her back in the [June 10 GI] New York Handicap. There was an easy pace and such and she was still able to overcome and run well.”

Brown added, “I'm the lucky recipient of some nice fillies [Peter Brant] bought over there [in Europe]. Me and my team are very grateful for all the horses Mr. Brant sends us. It looks like we're off to a great season. This is his tenth graded win already this season. He's having a great year and deservedly so. He's done the right thing by his horses [this] winter resting them.”

Winning rider Flavien Prat was coming off a double-digit score in the GIII Peter Pan S. one race earlier.

“I had the chance down the backside and got myself outside the slow pace and it felt like it wasn't going to be any good to stay on the inside,” said Prad. “So, I gave myself the chance to go around and it was a big help for me.”

Prat, who moved his tack from California to New York this spring, has become Brown's go-to rider.

“It's been a pleasure to ride for him,” said Prat. “I just try to do my best. Obviously, he's given me some great horses to ride, so I'm just a really spoiled guy right now.”

Pedigree Notes:
Rougir (Fr) hails from the first crop of Dalham Hall Stud's Territories (Ire) and the French Group 1 winner is his best runner to date. His three Northern Hemisphere black-type winners and additional nine stakes-placed runners include five graded performers. Most are out of European-based broodmare sire lines, but, like Rougir, MGSP-Ire Teresa Mendoza (Ire) has a Gone West-line damsire (Mr. Greeley). Elusive City, the Beaugay winner's broodmare sire, counts 21 stakes winners out of his daughters.

Summer Moon (Fr) was black-type placed in France for Jean-Claude Rouget, then shipped stateside to Chad Brown's barn for one start in 2015 before she was retired and bred to Blame and Mizzen Mast for her first two foals. Shipped back across the pond again, she has switched hands a couple of times, most recently at Arqana December in 2019 for €15,000 to Genovaa. The mare, who has several generations of Aga Khan breeding behind her, has a 2-year-old filly named Benvenuti (Fr) (Style Vendome {Fr}). That one sold at Arqana's October yearling sale last year for €100,000 to Paul Nataf.

Early Voting Puts in Final Preakness Prep

GII Wood Memorial S. runner-up Early Voting (Gun Runner) put in his final breeze ahead of the upcoming GI Preakness S. Friday morning at Belmont Park, going five panels in 1:00.63 in company with SW Miles D (Curlin).

Under jockey Jose Ortiz, The Chad Brown pupil went three-eighths in :36.40 before completing the five furlong move in 1:00.63 and galloping out six furlongs in 1:13 flat over the fast main track.

“He hit the times just as I wanted and he galloped out super,” Brown said of Early Voting. “If he comes out of the breeze in good shape, then he's on to Pimlico. Tentatively, I'm thinking of shipping the horse on Tuesday.”

Early Voting skipped the GI Kentucky Derby in favor of this spot. Brown made a similar move with the Klaravich co-owned Cloud Computing (Maclean's Music) after he finished third in the Wood.

“There's a lot of similarities,” Brown said. “They both are lightly-raced, improving horses that are coming out of the Wood and could use a little more time and experience rather than throw them into a 20-horse field in the Derby.”

Miles D is slated for the GIII Pimlico Special S. Friday.

“Miles D worked inside, he's actually a little better outside, but it set it up that way today,” said Brown. “He got a lot of the work this morning. He missed a little time because he got sick before the Oaklawn Handicap, so we missed that race. He should appreciate the distance of the Pimlico Special.”

Evenly-Matched Eight Try to Punch Belmont Ticket in Peter Pan

It'll be hard to separate the eight-horse field lined up in Saturday's GIII Peter Pan S. at Belmont, the track's traditional prep for the June 11 GI Belmont S., as evidenced by four horses landing between 3-1 and 4-1 on the morning line.

Given the narrowest of nods at 3-1 is WinStar Farm, CMNWLTH and Siena Farm's We the People (Constitution). Making a somewhat belated debut going a mile Feb. 12 at Oaklawn, the $230,000 Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream buy kicked away to an impressive 5 3/4-length romp, and was similarly dominant in five-length success in an allowance there a month later. The bay will look to rebound after finishing a dull seventh as the second favorite in the GI Arkansas Derby Apr. 9.

“The timing is just right,” trainer Rodolphe Brisset told the NYRA notes team. “He broke his maiden five weeks ago. It's five weeks away from the Belmont, and obviously it's a class test. What we want to see is if he can make his run from the middle of the turn to the wire. If he runs anywhere from one to three, we'll take a strong look at the Belmont. Hopefully, we can get some pace in the race and we'll be there that day.”

LNJ Foxwoods' Set Sail (Malibu Moon) looms a dangerous shipper for Richard Mandella. Third as the 9-5 chalk on debut Feb. 26 at Santa Anita, a race out of which the first, second and fourth finishers came back to win, the homebred stretched out to two turns there Mar. 27 and drew off to an auspicious 7 1/2-length graduation. The rail-drawn colt has worked sharply since, recording a pair of :59 flat five-furlong drills at Santa Anita Apr. 17 and 25 before working seven panels in 1:25 4/5 (2/2) there May 7.

Electability (Quality Road) looks for his third straight victory for Klaravich Stables and Chad Brown. A no-impact seventh debuting on the Saratoga lawn last August, the $300,000 Keeneland November purchase returned with a half-length tally going a mile Mar. 5 at Aqueduct and repeated by a head there Apr. 8.

“It's a big test for this horse, but he hasn't done anything wrong yet and he appears to be looking for a little more distance, so we'll see how he steps up,” said Brown, a two-time Peter Pan winning trainer.

Other main contenders include Golden Glider (Ghostzapper), who gets a bit of class relief after running fourth in the GII Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby and GI Toyota Blue Grass S., and Western River (Tapit), who rallied from nearly 20 lengths off the pace to earn his diploma going away by 3 3/4 lengths last out Apr. 2 at Oaklawn.

Rougir Debuts for Brown in Beaugay

French Group 1 winner Rougir (Fr) (Territories {Ire}), who beat elders to capture the prestigious G1 Prix de l'Opera Longines last fall, will look to give trainer Chad Brown his fourth GIII Beaugay S. in the last five years and record fifth overall as a strong favorite in Saturday's renewal of the 1 1/16-mile turf test at Belmont.

Victress of the G3 Prix de Reservoirs in her 2-year-old finale at Deauville in October of 2020, the chestnut finished off the board in her first three sophomore starts before a trio of agonizingly close finishes, running second by a head in the G3 Prix Chloe, fourth by a neck in the G1 Prix Rothschild and third by a neck in the G2 Prix de la Nonette. Undeterred, bettors made her an 11-5 favorite against 13 rivals in the Prix de l'Opera and Rougir obliged, finally ending up on the right side of a photo and getting up by a nose in the last jump. Shipped to Del Mar in her final start for trainer Cedric Rossi, she was seventh with a troubled trip in the GI Maker's Mark Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf.

“She's been training very well,” Brown told the NYRA notes team. “We took the winter to get her acclimated and such and she's been coming along nicely. We know that she has some good form last year and it looked like maybe she needed a break after a long campaign. We gave her extra time and brought her along slow. Her last string of works have been impressive and she has a nice turn of foot. [The Beaugay] might be a touch short for her, but it's a starting point.”

Should Rougir falter, Brown brings backup in last year's Beaugay runner-up Lemista (Ire) (Raven's Pass). Victress of The Curragh's G2 Kilboy Estate S. at three in 2020, the dark bay came up a half-length short off the bench in the Beaugay, earning a 100 Beyer, but failed to build on that in two more starts as a 4-year-old, checking in last of eight in the GI Diana S. and running a non-threatening third in the GI Beverly D. S.

“This filly has come along well. She got sick on us after the Beverly D.,” Brown said. “When she returned home from Arlington she had to go to the shelf for a while, so we took our time and brought her back and she's another one that's been training well.”

Fringe contenders are headlined by Plum Ali (First Samurai), who goes for her third straight stakes victory. Undefeated in three starts to begin her career, including a score in the local GII Miss Grillo S., the chestnut then went seven starts without a trip to the winner's circl before getting back on track with a tally in the Winter Memories S. in her 3-year-old finale Nov. 14 at Aqueduct. Given the winter off by trainer Christophe Clement, she returned with a half-length triumph in the Big A's Plenty of Grace S. Apr. 16.
