Haughty Dusts Rivals in Penn Oaks

Having been scratched from the GIII Soaring Softly S. last weekend, 'TDN Rising Star' HAUGHTY (f, 3, Empire Maker–Soaring Emotions, by Kingmambo) was re-routed for Friday's $150,000 Penn Oaks at Penn National and may have been a touch ring-rusty, but proved far too classy for her four overmatched rivals. A bit hesitant to load and on edge waiting for the gates to spring, the 2-5 chalk was tugging for her head as they raced under the wire with a circuit of the soft-rated turf course to travel as 60-1 outsider and turf debutante Irie Empress (Shackleford) went along at a snail's pace. Flavien Prat had the favored settled better entering the turn and cut the ribbons approaching the quarter pole, and though she drifted wide into the stretch and took enough time to gather in the front-runner, Haughty never felt the stick and waltzed under the line the handiest of winners. Somewhat controversially disqualified and placed third from an apparent debut victory at Belmont last September, the $70,000 Keeneland September buyback turned $310,000 OBS April breezer earned the 'Rising Star' designation on the strength of a four-length romp at Keeneland the following month. Despite a 16-day turnaround and some uncertainty as to whether she would make the race, Haughty gave an outstanding account of herself in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf when third and beaten three-parts of a length. McKulick Seeks Graded Success In Regret

McKulick (GB) (Frankel {GB}) will look to annex a career high in Saturday's GIII Regret S. at Churchill Downs. The 3-year-old filly, named after trainer Chad Brown's first-ever employee, the late Mary McKulick, was last seen finishing second in the GII Edgewood S. May 6. She was also a close third as the heavy favorite, beaten only one length, in the GII Miss Grillo S. last fall at Belmont Park.

Also looking for her first graded stakes score is Beside Herself (Uncle Mo), who enters Saturday's contest off a 2 1/2-length gate-to-wire win over allowance company Apr. 28 going 1 3/16 miles at Keeneland. She finished sixth behind the undefeated Spendarella (Karakontie {Jpn}) while making her stakes debut in Gulfstream's GIII Herecomesthebride S. Mar. 5.

Unanimous Consent Looks To Stay Undefeated In Pennine Ridge

Trainer Chad Brown sends out undefeated Unanimous Consent (GB) (Almanzor {Fr}) in Saturday's GII Pennine Ridge S. at Belmont Park. After breaking his maiden on debut as a 2-year-old Sept. 11 over one mile on the grass at Monmouth, he returned off a six- month layoff to beat allowance company Feb. 4 over the grass at Tampa. Stepped up into stakes company for the first time, he took Aqueduct's Woodhaven S. when last seen Apr. 23.

Making his first start on turf for Todd Pletcher after exiting the Derby Trail is 'TDN Rising Star' Emmanuel (More Than Ready). An impressive winner of his first two tries in Florida, he  finished fourth, beaten 5 1/4 lengths, after a very wide journey in the GII Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth S. He showed speed and tired to third behind Zandon (Upstart) in the GI Toyota Blue Grass S. Apr. 9. Emmanuel is out of a half-sister to MG1SW Hawkbill (Kitten's Joy), who earned over $4.7 million while racing in Europe, as well as Free Drop Billy (Union Rags), who took the GI Claiborne Breeders' Futurity.

Chad Brown's second runner Napoleonic War (War Front) broke his maiden on debut Jan. 21, then caught a troubled trip when fourth in the GIII Kentucky Utilities Transylvania S. Apr. 8. He rebounded with a slim victory against allowance optional claiming company over the Belmont grass May 5.
