Jack Christopher as Impressive as it Gets in Woody Stephens

 

ELMONT, NY – Did the best 3-year-old in the country run on the undercard?

Unbeaten 'TDN Rising Star' Jack Christopher (Munnings) put on an absolute show with a jaw-dropping win against five overmatched rivals in Saturday's GI Woody Stephens S. at Belmont Park.

Away in good order from his rail draw, the flashy, blaze-faced chestnut conceded the early advantage to Provocateur (Into Mischief) and was astutely guided by Jose Ortiz to the outside of that rival. Traveling kindly in second through fractions of :22.61 and :45.38, Ortiz took a peek over his right shoulder and had to be feeling mighty good as the 1-5 favorite cruised up to take over leaving the quarter pole. It was only a question of how much he'd win by from there. And the answer was 10 lengths while stopping the timer for seven furlongs in a very sharp 1:21.18. Pappacap (Gun Runner) was second. The pacesetter held third.

Jack Christopher is campaigned in partnership by Jim Bakke, Gerald Isbister, Coolmore Stud and Peter M. Brant.

“I felt really good as he was coming down the lane,” winning trainer Chad Brown said. “Once Jose [Ortiz] was able to extract himself and get this horse out in the clear, I didn't see any way the horse could lose.”

Jack Christopher once again received some awfully high praise from Brown, who also trains the talented 3-year-old duo of GI Preakness S. winner Early Voting (Gun Runner) and GI Kentucky Derby third Zandon (Upstart).

“This horse is an exceptional talent,” Brown said. “This is my 15th year of training and I've never had a dirt horse with this much pure brilliance. He reminds me a lot of Ghostzapper when I worked for Bobby Frankel. He's a brilliant horse that can probably run any distance.”

Brown added, “Everybody wants to have horses like this–horse of a lifetime–including me.”

A no-brainer 'Rising Star' on debut at the Spa Aug. 28, he concluded his juvenile season with a powerful performance in Belmont's GI Champagne S. Oct. 2. Scratched from the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile with a stress fracture in his left shin, he returned with a facile win in the GII Pat Day Mile S. at Churchill Downs May 7.

Jack Christopher will receive his first test around two turns going 1 1/8 miles in the GI TVG.com Haskell S. at Monmouth July 23.

“I'm looking to keep him healthy and looking forward to the next one,” Brown said.

Jack Christopher, a $135,000 FTKOCT yearling, is one of five Grade I winners for Coolmore's Munnings. He is the lone graded winner for broodmare sire Half Ours. The winner's dam is also represented by an unnamed Mo Town 2-year-old filly and a Complexity filly of this year. The former RNA'd for $145,000 at last week's Fasig-Tipton June Digital Sale. Rushin No Blushin, a maiden of eight career starts, was claimed for $50,000 out of her career finale by owner/trainer Neil Pessin at Keeneland in 2013. The half-sister to MGISW and useful sire Street Boss (Street Cry {Ire}) subsequently brought $70,000 from Castleton Lyons, in foal to Congrats, at the 2014 KEENOV sale.

Third Time The Charm For Regal Glory In Just a Game

Having finished fourth to then-stablemate Newspaperofrecord (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) in the 2020 renewal and again behind the impressive Althiqa (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}) in the 2021 running–while tactically disadvantaged to varying degrees on each occasion–Peter Brant's 'TDN Rising Star' Regal Glory (Animal Kingdom) got the ideal set-up in Saturday's GI Just A Game S. and came with her trademark flying finish to strike for the third time at the highest level. Wakanaka (Ire) (Power {GB}), winner of the G3 Premio Regina Elena (Italian 1000 Guineas) last season, picked up some valuable Grade I black-type in second, while the winner's commonly owned stable companion 'Rising Star' In Italian (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) stuck on gamely for third after attending demanding fractions.

The rail-drawn Leggs Galore (Bayern) flaunted her speed from the fence on the stretchout and led In Italian through an opening few furlongs in :22.25 as they put the better part of 10 lengths on Regal Glory. Wakanaka landed in fourth, while Speak of the Devil (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}), so impressive in winning the GIII Distaff Turf Mile on Derby Day May 7, missed the kick and trailed early.

The duel continued up front through a half-mile in :45.53, and Regal Glory was the first to make serious inroads, cutting into the deficit with every stride leaving the three-eighths pole. With things much more in her favor this time around from a tactical standpoint, Regal Glory had the pacemakers at her mercy in upper stretch, raced up to In Italian with about a furlong to race and kicked home a much-the-best winner as Wakanaka closed off well to complete the exacta. Similar to Rougir (Fr) (Territories {Ire}) in Friday's GI New York S., Speak of the Devil turned in a dull effort to be fourth.

It was a fifth Just A Game in the last six years–each for different ownership–for trainer Chad Brown, but perhaps none of those is as meaningful as winning this particular event for Brant, who campaigned Just A Game to champion grass mare honors in 1980. Among her victories were the local GII Flower Bowl H. and the GIII New York H. Brant's Bleecker Street (Quality Road) annexed Friday's running of the latter event.

“The first day I met him [owner Peter Brant] and I saw the trophy at his house and it was from Just a Game–it was the first thing I noticed,” said Brown. “We had a conversation about it, and I said, 'This is the one race I'm going to win for you one day.' We got to talking about it this week. It's meant a lot to him, this race.”

Brown indicated that the Aug. 13 GI Fourstardave H., a 'Win and You're In' qualifier for the GI Breeders' Cup Mile, would be next for Regal Glory.

A three-time graded winner for the late Paul Pompa, Jr., Regal Glory shared top honors at the 2021 Keeneland January Sale when selling to Brant for $925,000 as part of the Pompa dispersal. A listed winner either side of her Just A Game effort last term, she completed a Brant 1-2 behind Blowout (GB) (Dansili {GB}) in the GI First Lady S. in Lexington in October ahead of a richly deserved maiden Grade I tally in Del Mar's Matriarch S. Nov. 28. Easy winner of the GIII Pegasus Filly & Mare Turf Jan. 29, she most recently outsprinted stablemate Shantisara (Fr) (Coulsty {Ire}) to take Keeneland's GI Jenny Wiley S. Apr. 16.

A half-sister to dual G1 February S. winner Cafe Pharoah (American Pharoah) and dual-graded winning turfer Night Prowler (Giant's Causeway), Regal Glory is one of four Grade I/Group 1 winners worldwide for Animal Kingdom, who now stands in Japan. Dam Mary's Follies, trained by the late John Forbes to a victory in the GIII Boiling Springs S., was acquired privately by Pompa and added the GII Mrs. Revere S. before her retirement to stud. Mary's Follies was purchased by the BBA Ireland for $500,000 out of the Pompa dispersal and produced a colt by the Pompa-raced Grade I winner Connect that was recently sold to Saudi Arabian interests for $180,000 at the OBS March Sale. Having aborted to Curlin for 2021, Mary's Follies produced a full-brother to Cafe Pharoah this past Feb. 26.

Prat in a New York State of Mind for Belmont Stakes Day

ELMONT, NY – There will be a capped crowd of 50,000 on hand for Saturday's blockbuster GI Belmont Stakes program. Nobody will have a better seat in the house all day than jockey Flavien Prat.

The 29-year-old Frenchman will be aboard 2-1 morning-line favorite 'TDN Rising Star' We the People (Constitution) in the final leg of the Triple Crown. He will also pilot unbeaten sensation and fellow 'Rising Star' Flightline (Tapit) in the prestigious GI Hill 'N' Dale Metropolitan H. Both will exit from post one.

WinStar Farm, Bobby Flay, CMNWLTH and Siena Farm's We the People will take on seven rivals–including GI Kentucky Derby upsetter Rich Strike (Keen Ice), Derby fifth-place finisher Mo Donegal (Uncle Mo) and the filly Nest (Curlin)–in the 1 1/2-mile Classic. He's clearly the one to catch off his 10 1/4-length, front-running romp for trainer Rodolphe Brisset in the Belmont slop in the GIII Peter Pan S.

With Saturday's forecast calling for cloudy skies and temperatures nearing 80 degrees, he'll have a fast main track to work with this time.

“I think the talent is there,” Prat said. “His Peter Pan was a really good race. It's just a question mark with the distance, but it seems like we are all in the same boat.”

The unbeaten Flightline, pound-for-pound the most exciting horse in training, has won his first three starts in Southern California for trainer John Sadler by a combined margin of a whopping 37 1/2 lengths, led by his last out jaw-dropping score with a gaudy 118 Beyer Speed Figure in the GI Runhappy Malibu S. Dec. 26. He will face off against the ultra-talented GI Carter H. winner Speaker's Corner (Street Sense) as well as last year's GI Breeders' Cup Sprint winner Aloha West (Hard Spun) in the highly coveted stallion-making race. The $1-million Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling and 3-5 morning-line choice is campaigned in partnership by Hronis Racing, Siena Farm, breeder Summer Wind Equine, West Point Thoroughbreds and Woodford Racing.

“He feels like a special horse,” Prat said. “He's been responding really well to everything we ask him to do. He could be any type of horse.”

Prat's rapidly growing resume already includes wins in the first two legs of the Triple Crown and a trio of Breeders' Cup victories. In the irons aboard promoted 2019 GI Kentucky Derby upsetter Country House (Lookin At Lucky) as well as last year's GI Preakness S. hero Rombauer (Twirling Candy), he looks to go one better in the Belmont following a huge second-place finish aboard Hot Rod Charlie (Oxbow) in 2021. Prat won last year's GI Manhattan S. on the Belmont undercard aboard Domestic Spending (GB) (Kingman {GB}).

“Whether it's the Belmont, Preakness, Derby or Breeders' Cup weekends, this is the goal when you're a jockey,” Prat said. “You want to ride the best horses and face the best riders. That's the main goal. When you have the chance to ride and participate in these types of weekends, I'm obviously really grateful.”

After dominating the scene in Southern California for the past few years, Prat, somewhat surprisingly, shifted his tack to Belmont–home of the deepest jockey colony in the country–earlier this spring. His goal for the remainder of the year is simple: win an Eclipse Award as the nation's outstanding jockey.

“I was doing really well out there, but if I ever wanted to try New York, I felt like it was the right time to do it,” Prat said of relocating to Long Island along with his wife and two young children. “Try to keep improving my riding style and see what we can do out here.”

It's no coincidence that recent Eclipse Award winners Joel Rosario (2021), Irad Ortiz, Jr. (2018-20), Jose Ortiz (2017) and Javier Castellano (2013-16) all called the Big Apple home. Prat, represented by agent Brad Pegram, was an Eclipse finalist last year while boasting a career high in victories (246) and earnings ($23,214,813). Prat's first full season riding in North America was 2015.

“That's the whole point, to ride with the best riders in the country and also to try to keep improving,” Prat said.

He concluded, “I'm really happy here.”

Stars Come Out on Belmont Stakes Day…

Quality over quantity.

In addition to an intriguing renewal of the GI Belmont S. and a showdown for the ages in the five-deep GI Hill 'n' Dale Met Mile,

there will be six other Grade I events, albeit with some short fields, held on Saturday's star-studded program.

Champion and 'TDN Rising Star' Echo Zulu (Gun Runner) will cut back in distance to a one-turn mile in the GI Acorn S. after suffering the first defeat of her brilliant career while tiring to fourth in the GI Kentucky Oaks. She will meet just four rivals in the Acorn, led by the streaking Matareya (Pioneerof the Nile), a good-looking winner of the GII Eight Belles S. on the Oaks undercard.

The undefeated 'TDN Rising Star' Jack Christopher (Munnings), a dominating return winner in the GII Pat Day Mile S., puts his unblemished three-for-three record on the line against five fellow sophomores in the GI Woody Stephens S. The 1-2 morning-line favorite won last year's GI Champagne S. at Belmont in the fall before scratching from the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile with a stress fracture in his left shin. The seven-furlong contest is named in honor of the legendary late trainer Woody Stephens, who won five consecutive renewals of the Belmont Stakes from 1982-86.

Champions Letruska (Super Saver) and 'TDN Rising Star' Malathaat (Curlin) will clash in a highly anticipated GI Ogden Phipps S. The former has five top-level wins to her credit, including a wire-to-wire tally in this race last year, and is perfect in two attempts since a forgettable performance in the GI Breeders' Cup Distaff. Last term's GI Kentucky Oaks heroine Malathaat, a good third in the Distaff, kicked off her 4-year-old campaign with a well-timed win in Keeneland's GIII Baird Doubledogdare S.

The best wagering opportunities of the day will likely come in two of the grass stakes.

Casa Creed (Jimmy Creed) returns for the 13-deep GI Jaipur S. after pulling off a 10-1 upset last year. Arrest Me Red (Pioneerof the Nile), a last out winner of the GII Twin Spires Turf Sprint S., is the 5-2 morning-line favorite.

A field of 10, led by GI Old Forester Bourbon Turf Classic S. winner Santin (Distorted Humor), MGISW Gufo (Declaration of War) and GI Man o' War S. upsetter Highland Chief (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}), will line up for the GI Resorts World Casino Manhattan S. Trainer Chad Brown has won the Manhattan a record seven times, and will send out a trio–Adhamo (Ire) (Intello {Ger}), L'Imperator (Fr) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) and Rockemperor (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire})–seeking a fourth straight.

Speaking of Brown, he will also saddle the three top choices–Speak of the Devil (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}), a visually impressive heroine of the GII Longines Churchill Distaff Turf Mile S. in her U.S. debut, MGISW 'TDN Rising Star' Regal Glory (Animal Kingdom) and 'TDN Rising Star' In Italian (GB) (Dubawi {Ire})–in the five-horse GI Longines Just a Game S. He won this race four straight years between 2017-20.

First post for the 13-race program, featuring a trio of Breeders' Cup 'Win and You're In' events (Met Mile, Ogden Phipps and Jaipur), is 11:20 a.m. ET. Post time for the Belmont Stakes is 6:44 p.m.

National television coverage of Belmont Stakes Day will begin on FS2, where America's Day at the Races will air from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Coverage shifts to CNBC from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and NBC from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Quality Road’s Bleecker Street Comes Flying Late to Take the New York

For a brief few moments in the stretch it looked like Chad Brown, represented by odds-on Rougir (Fr) (Territories {Ire}); six-for-six second choice Bleecker Street; and 9-2 third choice Virginia Joy (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB})–not to mention pacesetter Flighty Lady (Ire)–might not actually get his record-tying fourth New York S. trophy. But depth like that, and all for Peter Brant, is nearly impossible to beat, and Bleecker Street, perhaps the most unsung unbeaten horse in the country, flew home in last-to-first fashion to reach a new high.

Stretching out to 10 furlongs for the first time off of consecutive nine-furlong scores in the GII Hillsborough S. at Tampa Mar. 12 and as part of a productive weekend for Brown and Brant at Churchill in the May 6 GIII Modesty S., Bleecker Street was content to trail early as Flighty Lady was hard ridden to the first turn, but then only posted somewhat un-rabbit-like fractions of :24.54, :50.76 and 1:16.48. Family Way tracked a couple lengths behind that one and further clear of the rest of the field. Family Way took over heading for home, and Irad Ortiz, Jr. had a fistful of horse on Bleecker Street as he guided his mount to the far outside for clear sailing. Family Way still looked like a winner to midstretch as nobody near her really kicked it in, but Bleecker Street–sporting a red cap to distinguish herself from her three stablemates–zoomed home to be up in time.

“Her closing kick, especially with those slow fractions, was nice,” said Ortiz, who had also piloted newly named 'TDN Rising Star' Artorius (Arrogate) as well as GII True North S. runner-up Sound Money (Flatter) for Brown on the card. “Not too many horses can go around a slow pace, slow fractions, like that. I made a wide move to go around and she still got there. She gave me a good kick. She's very nice. They were backing up into me a little bit and they were a little slow and then everybody was sprinting home, so it was hard to catch them. But she got the job done.”

This was Ortiz's first time riding the winner–Flavien Prat hopped off her for Rougir.

“I had never ridden her before so I talked to Flavien and he gave me some tips, like she's pretty easy to ride and she's not too fast out of the gate,” Ortiz said. “I tried to find out everything I can about her. She was undefeated and I wanted to keep going with her. Now she's 7-for-7 and everything worked out perfect. Thank God.”

Brown, whose three prior wins in this event also include a 2019 score for Brant, said of the winner, “What a remarkable horse. I wasn't sure about a mile and a quarter. She finished her races like she would get it, but as you know, handicapping doesn't always work out that way. Just because they're closing and you keep on stretching them out, sometimes it has to do with pace, when they make their move and how long their move is. This filly does everything we put at her. What a remarkable horse–where she started and where she came from. She's moving up in the ranks of one of the better ones I've had.”

Bleecker Street began her career as a member of Brown's perceived “B team,” winning first out at Monmouth and clearing her first-level allowance condition at The Meadowlands. She was entered and withdrawn from last year's Keeneland November sale.

As for Rougir, last year's G1 Prix de l'Opera winner and most recently an impressive victress of the G3 Beaugay S. going shorter here, Brown said, “She just didn't fire today. She was in a good spot, always ahead of Bleecker Street. We didn't have any excuse. We'll go back to the drawing board. Maybe the softer ground in her form suggested [she prefers softer turf], but she certainly trained really well at Belmont.”

Bleecker Street becomes the 14th Grade I winner for Quality Road, and second for Brown and Brant, following in the hoofsteps of Dunbar Road. This is the first highest-level winner in North America out of a mare by Danzig's son Exchange Rate (he has three in South America).

Dam Lemon Liqueur (Exchange Rate) was a debut winner and stakes-placed juvenile for owner/breeder My Meadowview Farm and the late Rick Violette. She was acquired by Ben Berger's Branch Equine for $75,000 in foal to Honor Code at the 2016 Keeneland November sale and RNA'd at that auction two years later for just $19,000 after not being bred back following the foaling of Bleecker Street. Bleecker Street has a 2-year-old half-sister named Red Lemonade (Always Dreaming) who was bred by Delia Nash, a yearling filly by Flatter and an Apr. 6 foal colt by Not This Time.
