Into Mischief’s Root Cause Overcomes Traffic to Earn ‘Rising Star’ Nod

Root Cause (f, 3, Into Mischief–Vertical Vision {MSW, $202,979), by Pollard's Vision), second at Saratoga Aug. 14 last season in a 1 1/16-mile turf maiden which yielded SP Towhead (Malibu Moon), SP Beauitfulnavigator (Ire) (Expert Eye {GB}), and SP Forever Dixie (Quality Road), made it look effortless here en route to 'TDN Rising Star'-dom at 1-5 favoritism in her 2023 bow over Gulfstream Park grass.

Breaking well but in no hurry to challenge the eager early speed, Root Cause stalked from the two path in third through the first bend. Midway up the backstretch, the eye-catching bay found herself locked in traffic as Tawaret (Pioneerof the Nile) rushed up the rail to claim an opening and the field was closing ranks around her for the run through the far turn. Shuffled back to fifth as 1:13.80 flashed across the board, Irad Ortiz opted for the overland route, and was full of horse when they arrived at the head of the stretch. Unleashing a wicked turn of foot, Root Cause put 2 1/2 lengths on her rivals with a motionless rider in the irons and won as easily as she pleased to claim her diploma over Settling Storm (Tonalist).

A half to Vertical Oak (Giant Oak), MGSW, $773,095–herself dam of 'TDN Rising Star' SP Giant Mischief (Into Mischief)–the victress is her sire's 37th runner to get the TDN stamp of approval. Half-brother Payne (Paynter), SP, $437,870 was a six-time winner in his own right. Thus far the most recent to the races, Root Cause has a 2-year-old half-sister Mitole Vision (Mitole) as well as a yearling half-sister by Authentic. Vertical Vision visited Caravaggio for 2023.

Collected’s Kalik Game in Seasonal Bow on Gulfstream Grass

1st-Gulfstream, $70,000, Msw, 3-17, 3yo, 1mT, 1:34.64, fm, nose.
KALIK (c, 3, Collected–Coronation Street, by Street Cry {Ire}) began his career in a Sept. 16 Belmont at Big A maiden special over the main track which yielded 'TDN Rising Star' Signator (Tapit) and next-out winner Warman Road (Unified), finishing last in that field. The Triple Crown-nominated chestnut was moved to the turf and stretched out to 1 1/16 miles Oct. 23 at the venue, and came a much improved second to next-out stakes-winner Bat Flip (Good Magic). Opening his sophomore docket here riding a healthy record on the work tab, Kalik tracked in fourth from two off the fence early as Cumberland (Classic Empire) stepped out to do all the running in the beginning stages. Tipped to the four path and called on for a run through the far turn, he took aim from six wide in the stretch and was making good progress before starting to move slightly inward during his rally. Bumping with a rival nearing the line, Kalik nailed the game Cumberland in a photo and overcame a stewards' inquiry into the homeward drive as the even-money favorite.

A half-brother to Bringer of Rain (Twirling Candy), GSP, $112,830, the Ontario-bred has a yearling half-sister by Hard Spun. Unraced dam Coronation Street is out of MGSW Sara Louise (Malibu Moon), making her a half-sister to GSP Sara Street (Street Sense). That second dam is herself a half-sibling to GSW Just Louise (Five Star Day), the dam of GISP & MGSW Forbidden Kingdom (American Pharoah). Coronation Street is due to Collected for 2023. Preliminary Pounces To ‘Stardom’ For Klaravich Stables

Forced to break from the far outside gate, Preliminary (GB) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) rewarded her backers at 3-1 with a 'TDN Rising Star'-worthy trip to break her maiden on debut at Gulfstream Thursday.

Caught five wide into the first turn, the $357,000 Tattersalls yearling purchase raced in the back-third of the field as Conseillante (Quality Road) set the tempo up front through opening fractions of :22.49 and :46.10. Allowed to tip in towards the rail to save ground up the backstretch, Preliminary held that position before advancing three wide into the far turn. Fanned out wider still to be nearly six across the track at the head of the lane, the filly clearly had another gear, dashing ahead inside the final furlong to win as she pleased by 1 1/2 lengths. 5-2 favorite Make the Boys Wink (More Than Ready) had to settle for second.

Preliminary continues a great run for Lope de Vega, becoming his 11th 'TDN Rising Star' and his third in 2023 behind Carl Spackler (Ire) and Algolia (Ire). First dam Lipstick Rose (Ire) is a half-sister to GI Hollywood Gold Cup S. winner Mast Track (Mizzen Mast) as well as G1 Pour Moi Coolmore Prix Saint-Alary victor Jemayel (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}). Lipstick Rose has a 2-year-old filly, Pink Fizz (GB) (Masar (Ire) and a yearling New Bay (GB) colt still to race. Winning owner Klaravich Stables, Inc. and trainer Chad Brown also teamed up to campaign Lope de Vega's GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf heroine and 'TDN Rising Star' Newspaperofrecord (Ire).

Juddmonte’s Accede A Winner On Debut At Gulfstream

7th-Gulfstream, $71,400, Msw, 3-16, 3yo/up, f/m, 6f, 1:10.67, ft, 1 1/2 lengths.
ACCEDE (f, 3, Into Mischief–Jibboom {MGSW & GISP, $487,600}, by Mizzen Mast), the 7-5 favorite for her career bow, broke with the front flight but was outsprinted for the lead by Snow Princess (Quality Road). Two wide between rivals into the far turn, she was able to tip inside as the field swung past the quarter pole and make a sustained run against the rail to clear off with a furlong to run. Maerdama (Girvin), another first-time starter, chased her home but was 1 1/2 lengths back of the winner. Jibboom, already the dam of Flying Jib (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), GSW-Ire, $135,114, is herself a full-sister to G1 Stewards' Cup winner Sea Defence and to the dam of GISW Gold Phoenix (Ire) (Belardo {Ire}). Afer losing her Into Mischief foal in 2021, Jibboom was not bred for 2022 but foaled a colt by Tacitus this year. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $42,000.
