Complexity Defeats Code Of Honor In Kelso Handicap

Winning his first graded stakes since taking the Grade 1 Champagne Stakes in 2018, Klaravich Stables' Complexity was a prompt favorite in Saturday's G2 Kelso Handicap at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y., winning the one-mile contest by 2 1/4 lengths over Code of Honor as the 4-5 favorite in a four-horse field. Stan the Man finished third, with Endorsed fourth.

Complexity, a 4-year-old colt by Maclean's Music bred by Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings, was timed in 1:33.82 on a fast track, carrying 119 pounds, five fewer than Code of Honor. He is trained by Chad Brown and was ridden to victory by Jose Ortiz.

He paid $3.80 as the favorite.

Complexity broke on top in the one-turn mile but Ortiz allowed Endorsed to set the early pace, going the opening quarter mile in :23.30 and the half in :46.61. Complexity moved up alongside Endorsed approaching the quarter pole, six furlongs timed in 1:10.05, easily putting away that rival and gearing up for the expected stretch run of Code of Honor.

Last year's G1 Travers winner, Code of Honor, trailed the field early under Javier Castellano, moved up to make a three-wide bid on the turn, but never could catch Complexity, who widened his advantage in the final sixteenth of a mile.

Complexity won his first two starts as a 2-year-old, a maiden race at Saratoga and the G1 Champagne at Belmont, then finished 10th behind Game Winner in the G1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Churchill Downs. He returned the following June, finishing last of 11 runners in the G1 Woody Stephens, then went to the sidelines again until late November, winning an allowance race/optional claimer at Aqueduct.

Following a fourth-place finish last Dec. 28 in the G1 Malibu Stakes at Santa Anita, Complexity was given more time off, coming back to win an allowance/optional claiming race at Belmont Park July 2. then was nipped at the wire by Win WIn Win in the G1 Forego at Saratoga in his most recent start.

Complexity's record now stands at five wins and one second from nine starts.

Uni Upsets Stablemate Newspaperofrecord In G1 First Lady, Gets Entry To Breeders’ Cup Filly And Mare Turf

Uni (GB) returned to her winning ways at the right time to take her second Grade 1 First Lady, turning the tables on accomplished stablemate Newspaperofrecord (IRE) at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Ky.

The First Lady is a Win and You're In Challenge Series race for the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf, meaning Uni will get an automatic berth in the race.

Crystal Lake took the early lead from Newspaperofrecord going into the first turn, with Uni sitting third off the early leaders. Uni and rider Joel Rosario followed Newspaperofrecord when the fellow Chad Brown filly drew alongside Crystal Lake going into the final turn. Uni took a wide route to the outside of her stablemate and shadowed her throughout the stretch, wearing her down in the final strides.

Uni had been the second betting choice at 2-1 behind even money favorite Newspaperofrecord. She paid $6.80 to win. Newspaperofrecord was third, and Beau Recall (IRE) was second.

The final time for the mile was 1:34.90.

Uni is owned by Michael Dubb, Head of Plains partners, Bethlehem Stables, and Robert LaPenta. She was bred in Great Britain by Haras D'Etreham. Uni is the daughter of More Than Ready out of Dansili (GB) mare Unaided (GB). She is also a past winner of the G1 Matriarch, the G3 Noble Damsel, and the G2 Sands Point. She came to this race with two other starts this year, finishing off the board both times after winning last year's Breeders' Cup Mile.

Uni Numero Uno Again in First Lady

Uni (GB) (More Than Ready), the “other” Chad Brown trainee here despite garnering champion turf mare honors last season, ran down her more fancied stablemate Newspaperofrecord (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) to defend her title Saturday in Keeneland’s GI First Lady S., a “Win and You’re In” qualifier for the GI Maker’s Mark Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf.

Given a 2-1 chance to atone for a pair of disappointing efforts as the chalk this term, the chestnut broke alertly and settled into third as her stablemate was forced to rate when longshot Crystal Lake (Distorted Humor) zipped off to lead. The Brown runners were both asked to quicken slightly after a :47.92 half, and Newspaperofrecord took the turn for home very wide, forcing her stablemate even further out into the course. A sprint for home figured to favor Uni over the typically front-running Newspaperofrecord, and the former kicked to the front in midstretch and widened her margin of victory to a length at the line. Beau Recall (Ire) (Sir Prancealot {Ire}) tagged the favorite for second, just like she had for the win in the GII Distaff Turf Mile S. last month.

A stakes winner in France as a sophomore, Uni was a graded winner Stateside at three, but blossomed and the end of her 4-year-old campaign when stringing together her fourth straight in Del Mar’s GI Matriarch S. She picked up where she left off in Belmont’s Perfect Sting S. last June, and was third behind fellow female Got Stormy (Get Stormy) and stablemate Raging Bull (Fr) (Dark Angel {Ire}) in the Spa’s GI Fourstardave H. that August. She flew home from far back to take last year’s First Lady, and duplicated that performance in the GI Breeders’ Cup Mile at Santa Anita while leading home a one-two for the fairer sex ahead of Got Stormy.

Third in the GI Just a Game S. at Belmont June 27 behind Newspaperofrecord and Beau Recall, she left wondering if she was the same horse at six when seventh in the Fourstardave over yielding sod Aug. 22.

Co-owner Sol Kumin confirmed after the race that Uni would now attempt to defend her Mile title Nov. 7.

Fire At Will Upsets Public Sector In Belmont’s Pilgrim

Kendrick Carmouche put Three Diamonds Farm's Fire At Will on the lead shortly after the start of Saturday's Grade 2 Pilgrim Stakes, and the son of Declaration of War never looked back, scoring an easy two-length victory in the 1 1/16-mile turf contest for 2-year-olds.

Public Sector, the 4-5 favorite for trainer Chad Brown, closed under Javier Castellano to be second but was never a threat to the winner. Step Dancer finished third and Shawdyshawdyshawdy finished fourth in the field of six.

Trained by Mike Maker, Fire At Will paid $29 for the win after covering the distance on firm turf in 1:43.46.

Sixth in his only previous turf race, a 1 1/16-mile maiden event at Saratoga, Fire At Will was the only stakes winner in the field, having won the With Anticipation Stakes at Saratoga on Sept. 2 — a race that was taken off the grass and run at seven furlongs on a sloppy main track.

Following that victory, Maker shipped him to Kentucky where Fire At will trained up to the Pilgrim at the Churchill Downs trackside training center.

In the Pilgrim, Fire At Will posted fractions of :25.58, :50.35, 1:15.09 and 1:37.67 en route to his final time. He opened a commanding 3 1/2-length lead at the furlong pole and coasted home for the victory.
