Breeders’ Cup Winner Sharing Headlines Field Of 10 In American Oaks

Trainer Graham Motion's Sharing is the filly to beat in Saturday's Grade 1, $300,000 American Oaks at Santa Anita. Originally run at Hollywood Park in 2002 and transferred to Santa Anita in 2014, the Oaks, the final G1 event of the year for 3-year-old fillies, has attracted a field of 10 and will be run for the 19th time on Saturday, opening day of Santa Anita's Winter/Spring meeting.

A winner over the course in the G1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at one mile on Nov. 1, 2019, Sharing, a Maryland-bred daughter of Speightstown, who is owned by Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Gainesway Stable, will be trying a mile and one quarter for the first time as she seeks her sixth win from nine career starts.

Eclipse will also be well represented by the Paddy Gallagher-trained Red Lark, who comes off a close fourth place finish in the G1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup at Keeneland Oct. 10 and who won the G1 Del Mar Oaks on Aug. 22.

Eastern-based Chad Brown looms dangerous with English-bred Capital Structure, who although she'll be making her stakes debut in the Oaks, exits a solid allowance win going 1 1/16 miles on turf at Belmont Park Oct. 25 and rates a big look with Joel Rosario aboard in what will be her fourth career start.

Finite Ships West To Take On Merneith In La Brea

In what appears to be a wide-open affair at seven furlongs, Steve Asmussen-trained Finite and Bob Baffert trainee Merneith head a field of 11 sophomore fillies in the Grade 1, $300,000 La Brea Stakes, one of five graded events on Santa Anita's Winter/Spring opening day this Saturday, Dec. 26.

A winner of the G3 Chilukki Stakes going a one turn mile at Churchill Downs Nov. 21, Finite is a three-time graded stakes winner who seeks her seventh win in what will be her 12th career start.

A winner of her last two starts, Merneith, a daughter of 2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharoah, seeks her third consecutive win and her first graded stakes win.

FINITE

Fresh off a rousing 2 ½ length win going a one turn mile in the G3 Chilukki Stakes at Churchill Downs Nov. 21, this daughter of Munnings will ship west in search of her first G1 victory. Although she rallied powerfully from off the pace to win the Chilukki, Finite has plenty of natural speed, evidenced by her gate to wire maiden win going 6 ½ furlongs on grass at age two. With three graded stakes victories and an overall mark of 11-6-3-0, she is the leading money earner in the field with $757,869 and looms the post time favorite.

MERNEITH

A game neck winner of an ungraded six furlong stakes at Keeneland on Nov. 7, this daughter of American Pharoah was an emphatic 3 ¼ length allowance winner at the same distance here on Oct. 11 and thus seeks her third consecutive win. A well beaten third by Horse of the Year candidate Swiss Skydiver in her only graded stakes try, the G2 Santa Anita Oaks five starts back on June 6, Merneith appears poised for a top effort as Baffert seeks his record eighth La Brea triumph.

MOTIVATED SELLER

Second, beaten a neck by Merneith going six furlongs at Keeneland Nov. 7, this daughter of top sire Into Mischief is very much on the improve for Brown. A six length first-out maiden winner going six furlongs at Gulfstream Park Jan. 12, she was then idle until Oct. 11 at Belmont Park, where she pressed the early pace and registered a 2 ¾ length allowance win at the same distance. In what will be her fourth career start, Motivated Seller will be trying graded stakes competition for the first time.

Turf Star Newspaperofrecord Sold, Retired; Will Be Bred To Galileo

Breeders' Cup winner Newspaperofrecord has been sold privately and retired, and she will be bred to all-world sire Galileo in 2021, trainer Chad Brown announced Wednesday on his Twitter account.

A 4-year-old daughter of Lope de Vega, Newspaperofrecord finished her career with five wins in 10 starts, earning $1,122,250 for owner Klaravich Stable.

Bred in Ireland by Times of Wigan Ltd., Newspaperofrecord was purchased by Klaravich Stable at the 2017 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, and brought stateside, where she got off to a fast start on the racetrack. She went undefeated in three starts during her 2-year-old campaign, using the Grade 2 Miss Grillo Stakes as a prep for her 6 3/4-length triumph as the heavy favorite in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.

She earned a pair of Grade 3 placings during her 3-year-old season, then came back strong in 2020, notching victories in the G3 Intercontinental Stakes and the G1 Just a Game Stakes. The latter half of her 4-year-old season featured in-the-money efforts in the G1 First Lady Stakes and G2 Churchill Distaff Turf Mile Stakes.

Newspaperofrecord is out of the British Group 3-winning Holy Roman Emperor mare Sunday Times, whose runners also include stakes winner Classical Times.

Galileo stands at Coolmore Stud in Ireland for a private fee. The 22-year-old son of Sadler's Wells has become a cornerstone of international racing through his progeny on the racetrack, and when they go to the breeding shed themselves.

A European champion in his own right, Galileo's 2020 runners are led by Group 1 winners Magical, Circus Maximus, Peaceful, Search for a Song, Shale, Mogul, Love, and Serpentine.

Del Mar’s Bing Crosby Season Ends With Safe Racing, Bigger Fields, Increased Wagering

The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club continued its industry-leading safety record and its increased wagering trends as its Bing Crosby Season concluded on Sunday, November 29.  The five-week fall meet provided total handle of $195.9 million, an increase of 33% over last season

“A terrific meet on all levels,” said Del Mar's CEO, Joe Harper.  “First and foremost, the horses and people who care for them were safe.  Wagering, which fuels the industry's economic engine, exceeded expectations and the racing product was once again topnotch.”

Average field size was 8.1 runners per race, a healthy increase of 9.5% from 2019's number of 7.4. A total of 131 races were run, compared to 114 last year.  Grass racing, including the seven graded stakes that make up the “fall turf festival,” once again highlighted the Bing Crosby Season.  In total, races on the grass produced an impressive average filed size of 8.7.

“Outstanding support from our horsemen and horsewomen,” said executive vice president of racing, Tom Robbins. “The racing was extremely competitive and, judging by our handle numbers, horseplayers responded.  We raised purse levels prior to the meet and it's gratifying to see that pay dividends.”

Racing during the seventh Bing Crosby Season was first-rate and no more so than the track's “turf festival” emphasis on its closing Thanksgiving weekend when seven graded stakes were run on the green and drew 20 runners from the east to participate. Champion trainer Chad Brown was especially successful with his horses, winning four of the stakes including the track's two Grade I races – the Hollywood Derby with Domestic Spending and the Matriarch Stakes with Viadera.

The meet's riding and training champions looked familiar: they were the same pair that led the session last year. Jockey Abel Cedillo easily outdistanced his rivals with 19 wins during the 15-day meet. Conditioner Richard Baltas sent out 11 winners after having won last year's crown with the same 11 firsts.

Juddmonte Farms was the leading owner for money won at the session with $256,000, while owners Perry and Ramona Bass won the most races – five all told.

“To follow up our highly successful summer meet with these excellent fall season results, on both the safety and business side, is a credit to the Del Mar team and the partnership we have with industry stakeholders,” said DMTC president and COO, Josh Rubinstein.  “It has obviously been a very unusual year and we have dearly missed our fans. But we have hopes that 2021 will bring us all back toward normal and let racing shine again in its usual fashion at Del Mar.”

Del Mar now will look forward to hosting the Breeders' Cup on November 5 and 6, 2021. It will be the 38th running of the championship celebration that features 14 races worth $31 million. The seaside track previously hosted a record-breaking edition of the event in 2017.
