Bolt d’Oro Colt Fastest On OBS Friday

Delayed a day due to severe weather in central Florida, the under-tack show for the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training got back underway Friday with a colt from the third crop of Spendthrift stallion Bolt d'Oro (hip 787) setting the high mark at :9 3/5. Consigned by Top Line Sales, which continued to be well-represented Friday after posting five of the top 18 fastest furlong works during Wednesday's session, the juvenile was purchased as a yearling by Cash Bloodstock at Keeneland September last year for $90,000. One of three to hit the :9 3/5 mark so far this week, he is out of a winning Speightstown dam who has produced five winners from six to race, led by stakes winner Blame J D (Blame) and stakes-placed $350,000 OBS March grad Golden Nugget  (Mendelssohn).

New York Going Strong

A registered New York-bred filly (hip 752) by Central Banker posted one of only two :9 4/5 works Friday. Three Diamond Farm's Kirk Wycoff signed the ticket as Bronco Bloodstock when he went to $32,000 to purchase the filly last year at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga New York-Bred Yearling Sale. It was one of five yearling purchases made by Bronco Bloodstock over the two-day sale. Four of those five yearlings are being resold at OBS April, with two (hip 637 and hip 253) joining hip 752 by working in :9 4/5 earlier in the week. The last of the four (hip 869) is expected to breeze Saturday. All four hips sell with the Wavertree Stables consignment.

“It's two chances for the price of one,” said Ciaran Dunne of Wavertree Stables. “Kirk Wycoff is in a spot where, if something happened and he wasn't able to sell, then he's quite happy to race. That's the main appeal of the New York-breds. He likes to race at Saratoga, so he tried to pick some that he thought fit that bill.”

After several nice days of breeze-friendly weather, including a tail wind down the lane, conditions weren't quite as kind to workers Friday.

“She [hip 752] was fortunate enough that she got out there before the wind got up,” Dunne said. “I think the track was fair. We expected her to work well. I think the main difference today is that we've had the tail wind all week and then it turns around and it's in their face, so that was a double whammy.”

Hip 752 is the second foal out of the unraced Tanmawwy (Candy Ride {Arg}), a daughter of group-placed Wasseema (Danzig) and a half-sister to stakes-placed Ekhtibaar (Bernardini). This is also the family of French group winner Funny Kid (Lemon Drop Kid) and MGSW Candy Man Rocket (Candy Ride {Arg}).

The same line of storms that canceled Thursday's under-tack show dropped north of an inch of rain around the Ocala area, but Dunne was quick to compliment track conditions even after the deluge.

“The track is fine.” he said. “That's the great thing about this surface is that, even after weather like that, it's still usable and it's still safe. The wind was the bigger factor today and she was lucky to get out there early.”

Sellers, Dunne included, continue to look forward to OBS April off of a strong and steady March renewal.

Hip 752 | Judit Seipert

“We're cautiously optimistic,” said Dunne. “March was solid without being outstanding and, I think as April gets stronger, it puts more pressure on March. People know there are 1200 hips more to come, so it's easier to sit back [in March] and say you'll wait a little. But April is obviously the big one now, so we've been optimistic.”

Also working in :9 4/5 Friday was hip 839, a colt by Army Mule out of Waltzing (Candy Ride {Arg}), who is a half-sister to graded winner Dancing Solo (Giant's Causeway) and Grade I-placed Dancing (Bernardini). The dark bay is consigned by Omar Ramirez Bloodstock on behalf of Eric Delvalle, who purchased him for $45,000 at last year's Keeneland September sale. Also on behalf of Delvalle, Ramirez sent out a filly by Omaha Beach (hip 308) to work the furlong in :9 3/5 during Monday's second session of the under-tack show.

A colt from the first crop of McKinzie (hip 862) was responsible for Friday's fastest quarter-mile work, working in :21. Out of a stakes-winning first dam, the juvenile, consigned by Pick View LLC, sold for $110,000 at Keeneland last September to Stock Thoroughbreds.

The under-tack show continues Saturday with hips 864-1035, with an additional day added Sunday for hips 1036-1208 to compensate for Thursday's unexpected cancellation. The OBS Spring sale will be held Tuesday through Friday, with bidding starting each day at 10:30 a.m.

What’s in a Name?

Let's hear for mature females running the show–and running in the show! They work hard for the breed, especially when they race past their first youth. Was Walt Whitman maybe thinking a little about older mares when he wrote: “The female contains all qualities and tempers them, she is in her place and moves with perfect balance”? And also: “She is to conceive daughters as well as sons, and sons as well as daughters”?

HEAVENLY PRIZE INVITATIONAL S., $121,250, Aqueduct, 3-6, 4yo/up, f/m, 1m, 1:39.51, ft.

1–BANK STING, 120, m, 5, Central Banker–Bee in a Bonnet (SP), by Precise End. ($14,000 RNA Ylg '18 EASOCT). O-Hidden Brook Farm & Joseph G. & Anne McMahon; B-McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds, LLC (NY); T-John P. Terranova II; J-Dylan Davis. $68,750. Lifetime Record: MSW, 9-7-0-0, $475,050.

One is Aqueduct stakes winner BANK STING. Her name is like a no-hitter in baseball: there is a certain perfection about it. The first part of the name comes from the sire, the second part derives from the dam. The full name is on to something different: a happy mix of the two making perfect sense. A+!

ALBERT M. STALL MEMORIAL S., $100,000, Fair Grounds, 2-19, 4yo/up, f/m, 1 1/16mT, 1:46.22, fm.

1–SHE CAN'T SING, 118, m, 5, Bernardini–Distorted Music, by Distorted Humor. 1ST BLACK-TYPE WIN. O/B-Lothenbach Stables Inc (KY); T-Chris M Block; J-Jareth Loveberry. $60,000. Lifetime Record: 27-5-6-4, $411,938.

Another is Fair Grounds stretch duelist SHE CAN'T SING. Being out of a mare called Distorted Music (Distorted Humor), she carries a sort of self-evident name

NELLIE MORSE S., $99,000, Laurel, 2-19, 4yo/up, f/m, 1 1/16m, 1:45.60, ft.

1–KISS THE GIRL, 122, m, 5, Into Mischief–Spin the Bottle, by Hard Spun. ($210,000 Ylg '18 EASOCT). O-Three Diamonds Farm; B-Classic Thoroughbred XII (MD); T-Michael J. Trombetta; J-Victor R. Carrasco. $60,000. Lifetime Record: MSW, 23-8-4-3, $456,686.

The third is Laurel winner KISS THE GIRL, her name related to the mischievous little game her dam is named after.

BROADWAY S., $100,000, Aqueduct, 2-13, (S), 4yo/up, f/m, 6f, 1:12.81, sy.

1–KEPT WAITING, 118, m, 5, Broken Vow–Orient Moon, by Malibu Moon. ($65,000 Ylg '18 SARAUG). 1ST BLACK TYPE WIN. O-Sanford & Irwin Goldfarb & Nice Guys Stables; B-John Lauriello (NY); T-Robert N. Falcone, Jr.; J-Manuel Franco. $55,000. Lifetime Record: 11-5-3-1, $266,600

Last, but not least, is another Aqueduct victrix: KEPT WAITING. Her name is in the vein of the BLUSHING GROOM (out of RUNAWAY BRIDE) tradition. There's someone waiting for someone somewhere, with apprehension growing by the minute about a previous promise.

Good luck to all these four ingeniously named female musketeers.

Morning Matcha, Magic Circle Chasing Oaks Points In Busanda

Stakes-placed Morning Matcha and graded-stakes placed Magic Circle will do battle in pursuit of Kentucky Oaks qualifying points in Sunday's 48th running of the $100,000 Busanda at Aqueduct Racetrack.

The nine-furlong event for 3-year-old fillies offers 10-4-2-1 Kentucky Oaks qualifying points to the top-four finishers.

With a perfect in-the-money record of 7-2-3-2, Cash is King Racing, LC Racing and Gary Barber's Morning Matcha brags field-best earnings of $247,390.

Trained by Butch Reid, Jr., Morning Matcha returns to the Big A following a late-closing second in the NYSSS Fifth Avenue on Dec. 18. Trailing the field down the backstretch, Morning Matcha kicked into gear with a late rally to finish 1 3/4 lengths shy of the victorious Yo Cuz.

The Pennsylvania-bred daughter of Central Banker, New York's leading sire in 2021, broke her maiden going 6 1/2 furlongs at Parx Racing on September 25, only 12 days after earning black type when second in the restricted Finest City at Presque Isle Downs. In her lone start around two turns, Morning Matcha defeated open company by 6 1/4 lengths going one mile at Parx on Nov. 16.

Morning Matcha, who was initially expected to ship to South Florida for the winter, remained in training at Reid, Jr.'s primary division at Parx in preparation for the Busanda.

“The quicker I can get her going longer, the better,” said Reid, Jr. “We've had plenty of time since her last race and she had a nice breeze last week. I think we made the right choice keeping her up here. She's been like that where she doesn't like to overextend too early on. That's why Kendrick [Carmouche] is riding her back, he knows the filly really well.”

Carmouche, who piloted the filly to both of her career wins, retains the mount from post 3 in pursuit of his second Busanda score.

While Morning Matcha attempts to make a good first impression on the Oaks trail, Magic Circle will seek to build on a third-place finish in the Grade 2 Demoiselle on Dec. 4 at Aqueduct, where she earned two Kentucky Oaks qualifying points.

J.W. Singer's Kantharos sophomore chestnut set slow fractions while in command throughout most of the nine-furlong Demoiselle journey before veering out in mid-stretch, ultimately giving way in the final sixteenth.

After a successful career debut at Saratoga at 25-1 odds in September, the Rudy Rodriguez-trained Magic Circle was a distant fourth in the G1 Frizette on Oct. 3 at Belmont Park before finishing a close second in the Tempted one month later.

Magic Circle breezed a half-mile in 51.12 seconds Sunday over the Belmont dirt training track.

“She worked well Sunday morning,” Rodriguez said. “When you're running against these type of horses, it's tough. She's just a very laid back filly. She lets us do whatever we need with her. She's shown plenty of promise from Day One. She's coming into the race well. We just have to hope for the best.”

Jose Ortiz, a two-time Busanda winner, will pick up the mount from the inside post.

After a collaborative triumph with The Grass Is Blue in 2021, trainer Chad Brown and owner Louis Lazzinnaro will vie to become the first trainer-owner combo to score back-to-back Busanda wins with Waters of Merom.

The daughter of Connect, who also is owned by FIN Stables, was claimed for $30,000 out of a two-turn maiden claimer in October at Keeneland, which she won by 8 1/2 lengths. She made a winning debut for her new connections on Jan. 6 at Aqueduct, traveling a one-turn mile at the starter allowance optional claiming level.

Dylan Davis returns to the irons from post 2.

Hall of Famer Bill Mott seeks a third Busanda score with Mike G. Rutherford homebred Rosebug. The daughter of American Pharoah found the winner's circle at fourth asking over a sloppy and sealed Big A main track on Dec. 30.

Rosebug is out of multiple stakes-winning Menifee mare Taittinger Rose, who was fourth in the 2004 Busanda before winning the Pennsylvania Oaks later that year. Rosebug's fourth dam is 1985 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies winner Twilight Ridge.

Manny Franco will attempt to win his third Busanda in the past four runnings when guiding Rosebug from the outermost post 6.

Completing the field are Gamestonks [post 4, Trevor McCarthy] and Reigning Chick [post 5, Jalon Samuel].

The Busanda honors Ogden Phipps' 1950 Alabama winner, whose name is an anacronym for the Bureau of Supplies and Accounts (BuSandA) – a Navy bureau that Phipps had served in during World War II. As a broodmare, Busanda, a daughter of War Admiral and maternal granddaughter of the influential broodmare La Troienne, produced Hall of Famer and prestigious sire Buckpasser and was also the great granddam of 1984 Champion 2-Year-Old Filly Outstandingly.

The Busanda is slated as Race 8 on Sunday's nine-race card. First post is 12:20 p.m. Eastern.

America's Day at the Races will present daily coverage and analysis of the winter meet at Aqueduct Racetrack on the networks of FOX Sports. For the complete broadcast schedule, visit https://www.nyra.com/aqueduct/racing/tv-schedule.
