Keeneland Catalogs 80 Horses For April Sale

MGSW 'TDN Rising Star' Cazadero (Street Sense), GISW Doppelganger (Into Mischief) and MGSW Messier (Empire Maker) can be found in the catalog for Keeneland's April Selected Horses of Racing Age Sale, to be held Sunday, Apr. 30 at 4 p.m. ET. The sale will be live-streamed on their website, Keeneland said in a Friday release.

“The April Sale will take place at a key time, two days after Keeneland's Spring Meet and at the start of Kentucky Derby week, when the energy and excitement for Thoroughbred racing are at a high,” Keeneland Vice President of Sales Tony Lacy said. “The auction will be an opportunity to buy or sell quality individuals after spring racing seasons as owners and trainers transition to summer racing.”

Keeneland will accept approved supplemental entries to the April Sale until the sale date. Due to the changeable nature of horses-of-racing-age catalogs, consignments will be stabled and a barn order list produced and distributed around Monday, Apr. 24, when the catalog is close to finalization. A printed version will be available on Monday, Apr. 17 and a supplemental catalog will also be available prior to the sale.

Participating consignors in the April Sale are Claiborne Farm, ELiTE, Four Star Sales, Gainesway, Grovendale Sales, Highgate Sales, Hunter Valley Farm, Mill Ridge Sales, Taylor Made Sales Agency, Tom Amoss Racing Stable and Vinery Sales.

Buyers who plan to attend or participate remotely should register and establish credit within the Keeneland Sales Portal, as soon as possible due to the impending date. Online and phone bidding is available.

Country Grammer Leads North American Charge Into DWC Night

WinStar Farm, Commonwealth Thoroughbreds and Zedan Racing's defending G1 Dubai World Cup champion Country Grammer (Tonalist) tops a dozen North American entries for the Dubai World Cup program at Meydan Racecourse Saturday, Mar. 25. The prospective fields were revealed overnight by the Dubai Racing Club.

The 6-year-old is one of 13 in the field for the $12-million centerpiece of the meeting, including no fewer than eight runners from Japan topped by Panthalassa (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}), who registered a half-length defeat of Country Grammer in the G1 Saudi Cup last month. Emblem Road (Quality Road), who upset Country Grammer in the 2022 Saudi Cup, is set to make the trip over from Riyadh.

In terms of numbers, the U.S. supplies five of the 13 likely starters the G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen, whose defending American-bred champion Switzerland (Speightstown) is also engaged. Gunite (Gun Runner) gave an excellent account of himself when making his seasonal debut in the G3 Riyadh Dirt Sprint, finishing runner-up to champion Elite Power (Curlin), while the in-form Sibelius (Not This Time) ships in for Midlantic-based conditioner Jerry O'Dwyer and will be ridden by Ryan Moore. Hopkins (Quality Road), a latest winner of the GIII Palos Verdes S., also represents the Bob Baffert barn, while C Z Rocket (City Zip) was a late addition to the field. Super Ocho (Chi) (Dubai Sky) is one of two World Cup night entries for trainer Amador Sanchez, who also sends out Gulfstream allowance winner Super Corinto (Arg) (Super Saver) in the G2 Godolphin Mile.

The G2 UAE Derby is the first race on the Road to the Kentucky Derby that offers the winner 100 points, and three American-based sophomores are in the mix. Two of those wintered in Dubai for Doug O'Neill, namely Tall Boy (Lookin At Lucky), fourth to Practical Move (Practical Joke) in last year's GII Los Alamitos Futurity, who handed Charles Fipke's Shirl's Bee (Bee Jersey) a one-length loss in the G3 UAE 2000 Guineas over a mile Feb. 10. Ah Jeez, a son of 2018 UAE Derby romper Mendelssohn, earned his way into the field with a 2 1/4-length allowance victory going seven furlongs at Meydan Feb. 24. Worcester (Empire Maker) is a third World Cup night runner for Baffert and most recently rounded out the trifecta in the Feb. 4 GIII Robert B. Lewis S.

Extravagant Kid (Kiss the Kid) won the 2021 G1 Al Quoz Sprint for Brendan Walsh and the conditioner is represented in this year's running by 'TDN Rising Star' Cazadero (Street Sense).

The last of the North American-based entries is Fipke's Grade I-winning 'TDN Rising Star' Shirl's Speight (Speightstown), who runs in the G1 Dubai Turf after finishing ninth behind Golden Shaheen entrant Lemon Pop (Lemon Drop Kid) in the G1 February S. on the dirt at Tokyo Feb. 19.

Keeneland Catalogs 73 Horses of Racing Age for April Sale

Keeneland has cataloged 73 horses for its April Horses of Racing Age Sale, to be held Friday, Apr. 29 following the races on closing day of the Spring Meet. The sale, which will begin at approximately 6:30 p.m. ET and be livestreamed on Keeneland.com, will be conducted as an integrated event, with live auctioneers at Keeneland and with horses presented for sale both physically at Keeneland and at off-site locations. Keeneland also will provide online and phone bidding for buyers who wish to participate remotely.

“We're really excited about hosting the April Sale as a complement to the Spring Meet this year,” Keeneland Vice President of Sales Tony Lacy said. “Racing in the afternoon and the sale in the evening will combine to showcase what Keeneland does best and provide a fantastic experience for our clients. The date of the sale should accommodate horsemen as they transition to summer racing.”

On Apr. 29, post time for Keeneland's first race will be 12:30 p.m. to accommodate 10 races, led by the featured GIII Bewitch S. The final race will go off at approximately 5:09 p.m., and the April Sale will begin around 6:30 p.m.

Highlights of the catalog include:

• Western River, a 3-year-old winning colt by Tapit who is a full brother to GI Belmont S. winner Creator and is being pointed at the May 14 GIII Peter Pan S. at Belmont
• Acting Out, a 5-year-old daughter of Blame who won the Apr. 2 Carousel S. at Oaklawn.
• Battle Bling, a stakes-winning 4-year-old daughter of Vancouver (Aus).
• Cazadero, a 4-year-old 'TDN Rising Star' son of Street Sense out of Grade 3 winner and millionaire Wild Gams who won the 2020 GIII Bashford Manor (G3) at Churchill Downs;
• Cowan, a 4-year-old stakes-winning colt by Kantharos who was second in the 2020 GII Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint and won the 2020 Duncan F. Kenner S.
• North Dakota, a 6-year-old son of Medaglia d'Oro who is a half-brother to leading sire War Front and won the 2020 GIII Red Smith S.
• Sianara, a 4-year-old winning daughter of Malibu Moon who is a half-sister to MGSW 3-year-old Forbidden Kingdom (American Pharoah).

Keeneland will continue to accept approved supplemental entries to the April Sale until the sale date.

Promising Sophomore Cazadero Headlines Saturday’s Gazebo Stakes At Oaklawn

Grade 3 winner Cazadero is the 9-5 program favorite for the $150,000 Gazebo Stakes for 3-year-old sprinters Saturday at Oaklawn.

The Gazebo headlines an 11-race card, with probable post time 5:52 p.m. (Central). The 6-furlong Gazebo is the 10th race. Racing begins Saturday at 1 p.m., and the infield will be open, weather permitting.

Cazadero, who races for his breeder, Stonestreet Farm, and Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen, will be making his first start since finishing fifth as the favorite in the $150,000 Saratoga Special Stakes (G2) Aug. 7 at Saratoga. Stablemate Jackie's Warrior won the Saratoga Special and was runner-up in voting for an Eclipse Award as the country's champion 2-year-old male.

In his first two starts, Cazadero was a front-running 8 ¾-length winner of his May 29 debut at Churchill Downs, then captured the $100,000 Bashford Manor Stakes (G3) by 4 ¾ lengths June 27 at Churchill Downs.

A son of 2007 Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense, Cazadero has been ridden in his three races by seven-time Oaklawn riding champion Ricardo Santana Jr.

“Cazadero showed a lot of promise,” Santana said. “So glad to be back on him.”

Cazadero has been based this winter at Fair Grounds. Asmussen will also send out unbeaten Jaxon Traveler (3 for 3), who hasn't started since winning the restricted $100,000 Maryland Juvenile Futurity Dec. 5 at Laurel.

Both Cazadero and Jaxon Traveler will be racing on Lasix for the first time Saturday.

The projected six-horse Gazebo field from the rail out: Sir Wellington, Alex Canchari to ride, 119 pounds, 7-2 on the morning line; Dusty Hill, Terry Thompson, 117, 8-1; Lock Up, David Cabrera, 117, 10-1; Jaxon Traveler, Francisco Arrieta, 119, 5-2; Game Day Play, Ramon Vazquez, 119, 3-1; and Cazadero, Ricardo Santana Jr., 119, 9-5.

Sir Wellington won the $100,000 Louisiana Champions Day Juvenile Stakes Dec. 12 at Fair Grounds and exits a runner-up finish behind unbeaten Swiftsure – another Asmussen trainee – in a Jan. 23 allowance race at Oaklawn. Sir Wellington finished second to Jaxon Traveler, beaten four lengths, in a first-level allowance race Oct. 23 at Laurel.

“He runs good all the time,” said Mac Robertson, who trains Sir Wellington for Extreme Racing Stables LLC (Vickie McGowan). “I thought he ran a good race last time. A couple of Asmussen's look a little better on paper, but we'll see how we do.”

Asmussen is seeking his second Gazebo victory and 93rd career Oaklawn stakes triumph.

Game Day Play, who is trained by Bret Calhoun, won the $60,000 Clever Trevor Stakes Oct. 30 at Remington Park.
