Woodbine’s GIII Seaway S. Goes Sunday

Woodbine Racetrack isn't done with the graded entertainment as the GIII Seaway S. for 3-year-old fillies and mares going seven furlongs takes to the Tapeta on Sunday.

Drawn to the outside is the last out winner of the GIII Trillium S. July 23 in Toronto, Il Malocchio (Souper Speedy). Cutting back, the Martin Drexler trainee is the morning-line favorite at 5-2.

The 5-year-old will face eight others, including Catherine Day-Phillips trainee Millie Girl (Hard Spun), who finished third in the June 3 GII Royal North S. and in the same spot in the GII Nassau S. July 1–both over the E.P. Taylor Turf Course.

Also present are a pair of alums from the Sweet Briar Too S. From Kevin Attard's shedrow, Vantarsi (Speightstown) was fifth in that race Aug. 19 and GSP Talk to Ya Later (Perfect Timber) from the Ian Black barn was the runner-up.

Finally, it would not be a Woodbine graded stakes without the presence of Mark Casse. The Hall of Fame trainer sends the youngest female of the bunch to the post in Ticker Tape Home (Medaglia d'Oro). The 3-year-old won the Fury S. in gate-to-wire fashion against state-breds June 10 before running fifth in the July 23 Woodbine Oaks.

Ontario Racing’s Horse Ownership 101 Sessions Work Their Magic

Edited Press Release

Purchasing two in-foal broodmares at the 2022 Keeneland November Breeding Stock sale doubled the size of Apricot Valley Thoroughbreds' broodmare band. The mares Tiptoe and Turning Point were the latest step in Colin Davis's methodical entrance into the racing game.

Davis, a resident of Cobourg, Ont., is new to racehorse breeding and ownership, but familiar with the equine stars of the sport. Growing up, he attended races at Kawartha Downs and in the last decade has owned multiple off-track Thoroughbreds.

As Davis went looking for more information on the racing industry, he found Ontario Racing's Horse Ownership 101 Sessions. An initial meeting with Elissa Blowe provided clarity on what style of ownership matched his vision. Blowe connected Davis to leading bloodstock agent Marette Farrell, and he headed to the Bluegrass State for the 2021 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale.

Davis spent four days, “pounding the pavement” with Farrell and left Kentucky with two mares purchased through Ontario Racing's Mare Purchase Program (MPP), a component of the Thoroughbred Improvement Program. When purchasing in-foal mares at recognized public auctions outside of the province, Ontario residents can apply for an incentive totaling half the purchase price, to a maximum of $25,000 per mare and $75,000 annually per person or partnership. The two mares Davis purchased in 2022 were also supported by the MPP.

“(The MPP) has been instrumental,” said Davis. “The first year I would have started with one mare, and then went to two. Each year you try and get an economy of scale, but it just sets you back because it's the same leg work, and the same expenses but no efficiencies.”

The program allowed Davis to target quality by stepping up to the price point where he and Farrell could purchase mares by proven broodmare sires. Tiptoe is by Tiz Wonderful the broodmare sire of 2022 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies winner Wonder Wheel and Turning Point is by Hard Spun. In 2021, he brought home Johansson by Pioneer of the Nile and Renata by Medaglia d'Oro.

In addition to his burgeoning band of broodmares, Davis has dipped his toes into racehorse ownership. He connected with Sovereign Award-winning trainer Catherine Day Phillips and is a partner in three horses. One of them, an Ontario Bred filly named Millie Girl, made her racing debut July 16, and won at Woodbine. The Davis family, Colin, his wife, and their two daughters Josephine and Felicity, made their way to the winner's circle.

“It's a different world, with a lot to learn once you get into it,” said Davis. “But if you can bridge that gap, it will help people get in the door, because once you're through that door, it is a lot of fun.”

Queen’s Plate Winner Mighty Heart In ‘Extremely Good Order,’ To Start In Prince Of Wales

It will be a field of nine for the 85th running of the Prince of Wales Stakes, the 2nd jewel in the OLG Canadian Triple Crown, to be held on Tuesday, Sept. 29 at Fort Erie Racetrack.

Five of the top Queen's Plate competitors will be taking another run for a triple crown jewel, including the first-place finisher, Mighty Heart. The one-eyed wonder trained by Josie Carroll for Lawrence Cordes, will once again have Daisuke Fukumoto looking to steer the race favorite first across the finish line and continue his quest to be the first Canadian Triple Crown winner since Wando in 2003.

“He came out of the Queen's Plate in extremely good order and breezed very well on Thursday,” said Carroll. “We thought he deserved a chance for a run at the Canadian Triple Crown.”

Trainer Kevin Attard is looking for better results with Clayton after a third place finish in the Plate, a neck ahead of Tecumseh's War, who will also be trying for a Prince of Wales victory for trainer Catherine Day Phillips.

Truebelieve, owned by Niagara's Centennial Farms shipped in to Fort Erie's backstretch and was out on the track for morning training on Friday.

“He came out of the gate a little bit stronger than I wanted him to, and didn't really settle, but he ran a good race and we wanted to give him another try with the Prince of Wales,” said trainer Cole Bennett about Truebelieve's performance in the Plate. “Now that he's had a race into him he's a little bit fitter and a little bit tighter. We've taken the blinkers off, which will hopefully help him to relax a bit. He likes the dirt and trained really well over Fort Erie's track, so we think the surface will suit him.”

Dotted Line will be taking another swing at a triple crown race after finishing 7th in the Plate. Trainer Mark Casse has entered Bold Victory and Muskoka Giant into the competition, and trainer Santino DiPaola will be running Enchant Me.

Many Fort Erie locals will be cheering for supplemental entry Red Mercury, who is stabled in Fort Erie's backstretch. Trained by Paul Lepaine, for MPB Stables, he will be the race longshot at 30-1.

The $400,000 Prince of Wales Stakes is the 2nd jewel in the OLG Canadian Triple Crown, for three-year-olds foaled in Canada, running 1 3/16 miles on Fort Erie's dirt surface.  First race post time on September 29 is 2:10 p.m., with the Prince of Wales race scheduled for approximately 5:37 p.m. Due to COVID-19, Fort Erie Race Track will be closed to spectators. Fans can tune in to the Canadian Triple Crown broadcast on TSN sponsored by OLG, beginning at 5:00 p.m. on TSN channels 1,3, 4, and 5.

Tuesday's card will include a mandatory payout of the Jackpot High-5 pool in our final race, with a carryover amount of $178,381.93.
