Back-To-Back Minstrels For Holy Roman Emperor’s Romanised

Enjoying the perfect warm-up for a repeat bid in the G1 Prix Jacques le Marois, Robert Ng’s Romanised (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) was at or very near his best to register back-to-back wins in Saturday’s G2 Paddy Power Minstrel S. at The Curragh. Tracking the 10-11 market-leader Lancaster House (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in third against the rail, the 9-4 second favourite was angled out of a pocket by Billy Lee to swamp that rival at the furlong pole. Asserting on the run to the line, the 2018 G1 Irish 2000 Guineas hero who was last seen finishing runner-up in the G1 Prix du Moulin had 1 3/4 lengths to spare over the Ballydoyle runner there, with Surrounding (Ire) (Lilbourne Lad {Ire}) 2 1/4 lengths behind in third.

“We were keen to start his season locally at a track he’s won at before and I’m delighted with that,” trainer Ken Condon commented. “He’s a little bit heavier and a year older and he’d been working nicely without any fireworks–all the signs were very good, but bearing in mind he has needed his comeback runs over the last two seasons I’m very pleased with that. He was not too fresh and real professional and his work had been like that, nice and relaxed. It’s lovely that he showed that on ground as dead and slow as he’d want it and the Jacques le Marois is the primary target. We had a super day there last year and it’s his big aim. Hopefully, he takes this race well and I’m sure he’ll get something from it as he would have been ring-rusty. Deauville’s straight track suits his way of running best and we’ll discuss the rest of his campaign with his owner Robert and racing manager Rupert [Pritchard-Gordon]. He might go to Longchamp again for the Moulin and might end up in Hong Kong later after three runs. He’d still be a fresh horse then, hopefully.”

Romanised, whose Curragh efforts now read three wins from four starts, is a half to the dual listed scorer Fictional Account (Ire) (Stravinsky) and the G3 St Leger Italiano winner Rock of Romance (Ire) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}). The dam Romantic Venture (Ire) (Indian Ridge {Ire}) hails from a Moyglare Stud family and is a full-sister to the G3 Brigadier Gerard S. and G3 Arc Trial S. scorer Sights On Gold (Ire) and a half to the four-times group 1-wining Hong Kong Horse of the Year Designs On Rome (Ire) by Romanised’s sire Holy Roman Emperor, as well as to the GII American Derby winner Simple Exchange (Ire) (Danehill). The third dam Seasonal Pickup (The Minstrel), a full-sister to the dam of the G1 Irish Derby hero Grey Swallow (Ire) (Daylami {Ire}), is the second dam of the G2 Feehan S. winner and G1 George Ryder S. runner-up Rekindled Interest (Aus) (Redoute’s Choice {Aus}).

Champs Elysees’ Dame Malliot Wins the Princess of Wales’s

Few senior jockeys in the weighing room would have dared to make the move that Hollie Doyle did on Dame Malliot (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}) after just five furlongs in Thursday’s G2 Princess of Wales’s Tattersalls S., but the burgeoning talent knew best and her enterprise paid off handsomely. Taken out of Saturday’s G2 Lancashire Oaks due to soft ground, last year’s G2 Prix de Pomone winner was faced with that scenario here as Newmarket’s July Festival opener fell under grey skies and rain. Too free for the first half a mile anchored behind the leading trio, the 8-1 shot was allowed to tank to the front facing the long seven-furlong straight run to the finish. As last year’s winner Communique (Ire) (Casamento {Ire}) loomed inside the final three furlongs, Anthony Oppenheimer’s homebred would have been forgiven for laying down on her seasonal bow but instead began to assert from the furlong pole and had 2 1/4 lengths to spare over that rival at the line. There was another 1 1/2 lengths back to the veteran Desert Encounter (GB) (Halling) in third, with the 9-4 favourite Enbihaar (Ire) (Redoute’s Choice {Aus}) only fourth.

Doyle had partnered the winner to her emphatic five-length success in the Listed Aphrodite Fillies’ S. over this course and distance in July, a performance characterised by her ability to switch off in rear. “When I won on her here last year, I managed to settle her and she came home nicely but today she was very fresh as they didn’t go overly-quick early and she wouldn’t settle,” her rider commented. “I had a big decision to make then, do I hold her up and run the risk that she would pull too hard and not get home or do I leave her alone and make use of her stride? I pulled her away from the others and she pricked her ears and settled beautifully, so thankfully it worked out. I just had to use my initiative and she didn’t end up racing too soon like the others, so I had a bit more left in the tank. The ground was a bit of a worry, she had got away with it when she was the best horse at Deauville last year, but this was a tough contest. It’s an amazing feeling to get that group winner under my belt. I’ve had my Royal Ascot winner, so that box was ticked and this is another one. I’d like to think she could pick up a group one somewhere and she’ll definitely stay further.”

Ed Vaughan had opted to treat Dame Malliot with kid gloves as a 3-year-old, but there had been enough in her Aphrodite display to suggest that connections would have a serious prospect on their hands in 2002. Packed away following her sixth behind Enbihaar in Doncaster’s G2 Park Hill S. in September, the bay demonstrated here that she is ready to repay the faith shown to her. “I thought she might have gone too soon, but they weren’t going fast enough for her. Five out, I thought she might get caught out on the ground but she kept picking up,” her trainer commented. “She’s a good filly who holds the track record here on very fast ground. Frankie [Dettori] won on her in France on heavy ground, but got off and said never to run her on that sort of ground again. We’ll probably have to take on Mr Oppenheimer’s other filly Star Catcher, but I have got her in a group one in Germany so I’ll leave it up to Mr Oppenheimer.”

Dame Malliot’s winning dam Stars In Your Eyes (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) was sold for 32,000gns to Tally-Ho Stud at the 2018 Tattersalls December Mares Sale after producing the smart handicapper Banksea (GB) (Lawman {Fr}). Her dam Apache Star (GB) (Arazi), who was third in the Listed Cheshire Oaks, produced three black-type performers including the G2 Dante S. third Coordinated Cut (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) who was later re-named Victor Delight in Hong Kong. This is also the family of the recent G2 Ribblesdale S. winner and G1 Epsom Oaks third Frankly Darling (GB) (Frankel {GB}), the G3 Lingfield Derby Trial winner Mystic Knight (GB) (Caerleon) and the G1 Coronation S. heroine Rebecca Sharp (GB) (Machiavellian). The dam also has a 2-year-old full-brother to Banksea to come.

Way To Paris Has His Day In the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud

Good things come to those who wait and connections and fans of Way To Paris (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}) gained a much-deserved moment in the sun as the 7-year-old was played late to take Sunday’s G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud. Restrained in last early by Pierre-Charles Boudot, the ever-zestful grey emerged in the nick of time to deny the battling duo Nagano Gold (GB) (Sixties Icon {GB}) and Ziyad (GB) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}) by a neck and a head. “You are always a little bit worried when running horses back-to-back with short intervals, but it looked in the mornings as if he had kept his form,” trainer Andrea Marcialis said of the 6-5 favourite, who was runner-up in the G1 Prix Ganay at Chantilly June 14. “It is my and his first group 1 and he is so brave–I owe him so much and it is a great moment. I thought we were in trouble, but he found more and has a big heart. He’ll have a break now until the autumn.”

Way To Paris had come to prominence in 2018 when placed in the G2 Grand Prix de Chantilly and G3 Prix d’Hedouville before being tried over staying trips at the beginning of the following season. Runner-up in the G3 Prix de Barbeville and G2 Prix Vicomtesse Vigier at ParisLongchamp, he dropped to 14 furlongs to beat Marmelo (GB) (Duke of Marmalade {Ire}) in the G2 Prix Maurice de Nieuil also at that venue in July before finishing second to Waldgeist (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) in the G2 Prix Foy sent back there again in September. His last three starts prior to this saw him run second in the G2 Prix d’Harcourt also at ParisLongchamp May 11, gain a 4 1/2-length success in the latest edition of the Grand Prix de Chantilly staged at Deauville May 31 and run Sottsass (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) to a head when second in the Ganay.

With Old Persian (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) failing to fire and beaten in early straight, Pierre Charles-Boudot’s task was made easier and with the veteran giving him all the right signals it was just a case of when to ask him to extend. Ziyad refused to relent on the lead, as he had 12 months ago, but eventually had to give best to Nagano Gold only for them both to be swamped inside the last 100 metres by the popular grey. “I’m delighted–he deserved that and a mile and a half is much better for him than the Ganay distance,” the winning rider said. “He was more keen than usual during the race and it took a little while to get him to relax, so he maybe needs a break now.”

Way To Paris is the last living foal out of the G2 Premio Lydia Tesio winner Grey Way (Cozzene), whose previous best was the dual G1 Premio Presidente della Repubblica hero Distant Way (Distant View). Also responsible for the G3 Premio Ambrosiano winner Cima De Pluie (GB) (Singspiel {Ire}), she hails from the family of the triple grade I-winning Redattore (Brz) (Roi Normand). This is the dam line of Intriguing (Swaps), producer of the champion Numbered Account (Buckpasser) who is herself the dam of the GI Beldame S. heroine and multiple stakes-producing Dance Number (Northern Dancer) and the sire Private Account.
