Cash Bound For French Derby

Earle Mack's Cash (Ire) (Shamardal), who ran second in Sandown's Apr. 22 G3 bet365 Classic Trial by only a short head to Juddmonte's Westover (GB) (Frankel {GB}), will make his next start in the G1 Prix du Jockey Club on June 5, according to Mack's British-based racing manager Anthony Burke. Trained by David Simcock, the colt broke his maiden at first asking going a mile at Newmarket last October. He was withdrawn from the G1 Cazoo Derby field earlier this week.

Burke said, “He goes to the French Derby. We took him out of the English Derby this week as we felt the French Derby would suit him better.

“Whatever he does this year will be a bonus because he is a big horse, with loads of potential. He finished his race off very well at Sandown last time and we felt that Chantilly would suit him better than the hustle and bustle of Epsom.”

Cazoo Derby Features Desert Crown Among 21 Remaining

Saeed Suhail's Desert Crown (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) anchors the 21 colts remaining at this entry stage for the G1 Cazoo Derby on June 4. The Sir Michael Stoute-trained colt is a perfect two-for-two after winning the G2 Dante S. at York on May 12. He is joined by the Godolphin duo of Listed Blue Riband Trial winner Nahanni (GB) (Frankel {GB}) and the stakes-placed Walk of Stars (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), both trained by Charlie Appleby. Aidan O'Brien and the Coolmore partners have a quintet of colts still entered-Changingoftheguard (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who won the G3 Boodles Chester Vase S., G3 Amethyst S. runner-up Ivy League (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), Listed Dee S. winner Star of India (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), G3 Derby Trial S. scorer Stone Age (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), and Listed SBK Derby Trial S. victor United Nations (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).

One horse no longer taking part in the Epsom Downs Classic is Cash (Ire) (Shamardal), who finished second in the Listed bet365 Classic Trial at Sandown on Apr. 22.

Frankel’s Westover Prevails In the Classic Trial

Last year's G3 Sandown Classic Trial was a momentous renewal and Friday's is another to keep a close eye on after a trio of likely types finished clear led home by Westover (GB) (Frankel {GB}). Last seen finishing runner-up in Pontefract's Listed Silver Tankard S. in October, Juddmonte's imposing bay raced freely for Rob Hornby tracking the 6-5 favourite Goldspur (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) throughout the early stages. Edging ahead a furlong from home, the 5-1 shot was initially wayward but honest enough to give extra and hold off the late surge of the highly promising TDN Rising Star Cash (Ire) (Shamardal) by a short head. Fellow TDN Rising Star Goldspur, whose juvenile form included a win in the G3 Zetland S. and a third placing in the G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud, provided the ballast to the form, a length further away in third. “He's a beast, a serious unit, and we always thought he'd be better at three,” Hornby said. “He had a roll around in front, but got his head down on the line when it mattered. For a big horse, he's pretty well-balanced and is quite light on his feet.”

Westover, whose debut resulted in a success over a mile here in August, was also second to Zechariah (Ire) (Nathaniel {Ire}) in Newbury's renowned Haynes, Hanson & Clark Conditions S. prior to the Silver Tankard. He had a distinct experience edge over the eye-catching runner-up as a result and Cash's trainer David Simcock was understandably buoyed by the performance of Earle Mack's exciting prospect. “He's come home strong, stayed the 10 furlongs well and showed a good turn of foot,” he said of the second, who had missed the break after proving difficult to load. “We've got a long time to go [until the Derby] and things like having another run first to think about. I'm not going to make any calls now, but it looks like we've got quite a nice horse on our hands and it looks like he'll stay well.”

Pedigree Notes:

Westover is the 10th foal out of Mirabilis (Lear Fan), who captured the GIII Churchill Distaff Turf Mile and was placed in the G1 Prix de la Foret, GII Jenny Wiley S. and GII Buena Vista H. His full-brother Monarchs Glen (GB), who was a disappointing fourth as the odds-on favourite in the 2017 edition of this race, went on to prove that form all wrong with successes in the G3 Darley Club S., Listed Wolferton S. and Jonathan B. Schuster Memorial S. The GII Buena Vista H.-winning second dam Media Nox (GB) (Lycius) is the producer of a former Juddmonte star in Nebraska Tornado (Storm Cat), heroine of the G1 Prix de Diane and G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp, while the family also features the G2 Prix Eugene Adam scorer Burning Sun (Danzig) and group and graded-stakes winners Mallory (Aus) (Not a Single Doubt {Aus}) and Anothertwistafate (Scat Daddy). Also connected to the G3 Earl of Sefton S.-winning sire Phoenix Tower (Chester House), Mirabilis's 2-year-old filly Jalapa (GB) is by Expert Eye (GB).

Alcohol Free The Star Attraction At Sandown

Sandown hosts a trio of group contests on Friday's seven-race card with the bet365-sponsored G2 Mile and G3 Classic Trial vying for top billing on a mouthwatering programme. Jeff Smith's G1 Fillies' Mile, G1 Coronation S. and G1 Sussex S. heroine Alcohol Free (Ire) (No Nay Never), a rare purchase for the Littleton Stud supremo, is the day's undoubted star attraction and will be a warm order in the G2 bet365 Mile. Her chief threat is Shadwell Estate Company's match-fit G1 2000 Guineas seventh Mutasaabeq (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), who notched a conditions win at Thirsk on seasonal return earlier this month.

“We're very happy with Alcohol Free and she's further forward in her fitness and in her coat, which was not the case [at the same stage] last year,” her trainer Andrew Balding revealed. “It's very good prize-money, it's an important race and it will be nice to get her out and get her going. We've been really pleased in her work and her wellbeing, so we thought we'd have a run before making a decision on her summer targets. The things we know about her is she does stay a mile and seems to be better on a turning track. She's probably better with a little bit more give underfoot, but she has coped with faster ground. The one question we'll be asking ourselves after this, just to keep options open, is could we manage a drop in trip at some stage during the season. Races like the [G1] July Cup or [G1] Platinum Jubilee, if the ground was soft or on the slow side, are two options, certainly.”

Clash of the Rising Stars in the Classic Trial

Godolphin's G3 Zetland S. victor and G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud third Goldspur (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), the only one of seven nominees with pattern-race experience in the G3 bet365 Classic Trial, is the latest G1 Epsom Derby entry off Charlie Appleby's red-hot production line and another primed to test his Blue Riband mettle.

“We have been really pleased with how Goldspur has progressed over the winter,” the trainer said. “He broke his maiden at Sandown and went on to get some nice form in the book at Newmarket and Saint-Cloud. If he reproduces the top end of his juvenile form, he is going to be very competitive.  Hopefully, this is a stepping-stone on to better things, and a step up in distance in time is going to see further improvement. Like all 3-year-olds at this time of year, everyone is trying to see where they fit in the rankings.”

Goldspur will be accompanied by fellow 'TDN Rising Stars' Cash (Ire) (Shamardal) and River Thames (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}) making seasonal returns for David Simcock and Aidan O'Brien, respectively. Both are set for their first outings since acquiring this publication's seal of approval on debut last year.

Low Turnout for the Gordon Richards

Very much an undercard event, this year's renewal of the G3 bet365 Gordon Richards S. has attracted just three to the dance. Shadwell Estate Company's G3 Darley S. winner Mostahdaf (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) sets the standard and will be favoured to get the better of G3 Rose of Lancaster S. victor Foxes Tales (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) and Listed Wolferton S. scorer Juan Elcano (GB) (Frankel {GB}).

Blueblood Blitz on the Undercard

Adding lustre to the day's black-type competition is a deep renewal of the Nordoff Robbins Charlie Watts Memorial Fillies' Novice S., the card's fifth event of the day won in 2019 by subsequent G2 Ribblesdale S. third Sparkle Roll (Fr) (Kingman {GB}), for 3-year-old fillies over a trip just shy of 10 furlongs. Sparkle Roll's Clarehaven base is responsible for three of the baker's dozen set to assemble for this year's edition headed by Lord Lloyd Webber's Darmoiselle (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), who is a daughter of the Watership Down operation's MG1SW distaffer Dar Re Mi (GB) (Singspiel {Ire}) and thus a full-sister to MG1SW sire Too Darn Hot (GB), MG1SP G2 Middleton S. victrix Lah Ti Dar (GB) and stakes-winning G1 Prix de l'Opera third So Mi Dar (GB).
