Rising Star Looks to Remain Perfect in Dogwood

'TDN Rising Star' Carribean Caper (Speightstown) looks to keep her perfect record in tact Saturday and score her first graded victory in Churchill's GIII Dogwood S. Donning cap and gown by eight lengths in her Fair Grounds unveiling Feb. 13, the $250,000 KEESEP acquisition captured a Keeneland optional claimer Apr. 2 and an Ellis Park test July 10. She passed her first black-type test with ease in the Audobon Oaks last out there Aug. 15.

Li'l Tootsie (Tapiture) seeks her black-type badge in this event. Capturing a Churchill optional claimer May 31, she finished ninth in both the July 7 GIII Indiana Oaks and the grassy Galway S. at Saratoga Aug. 15. The bay rallied to be third last time when getting back on dirt at the Spa in the GII Prioress S. Sept. 4.

Patty H (Flatter) makes her first start off the claim here. She was haltered by Mike Miceli for $40,000 out of a winning effort at Saratoga July 16. GIII Iowa Oaks runner-up Shesa Mystery (Verrazano) also runs in this spot.

Undefeated Carribean Caper Headlines Saturday’s $275,000 Dogwood

Columbine Stable's undefeated 3-year-old filly Carribean Caper will attempt to land her fifth consecutive victory Saturday as the likely favorite in the 46th running of the $275,000 Dogwood Stakes (Listed) at Churchill Downs.

The seven-furlong Dogwood drew a compact field of seven 3-year-old fillies and was carded as Race 8 with a post time of 4:22 p.m. (all times Eastern). Saturday's 11-race card features a stakes trio including the inaugural runnings of the $275,000 Bourbon Trail and $275,000 Harrods Creek, both for 3-year-olds. First post is 12:45 p.m.

Trained by Al Stall Jr., Carribean Caper began her career at Fair Grounds with a scintillating eight-length score. The daughter of Speightstown then cruised to a 4 ½-length first-level allowance victory at Keeneland. Following three months away from the races, Carribean Caper returned in a conditioned allowance event at Ellis Park where she dominated four rivals by 4 ½ lengths. In her most recent start, the Kentucky-bred defeated Magic Quest by one-length in the $100,000 Audubon Oaks at Ellis. Colby Hernandez, who has been aboard Carribean Caper for all four of her lifetime starts, will ride from post No. 2.

Saturday's Dogwood field also includes Joel Politi's Li'l Tootsie and Let It Ride Stables' Shesa Mystery, who are both graded stakes placed in their young careers.

The complete Dogwood field from the rail out (with jockey and trainer):

  1. Coppelia (Martin Garcia, Phil Bauer)
  2. Carribean Caper (Hernandez, Stall)
  3. Li'l Tootsie (James Graham, Tom Amoss)

  5. Shesa Mystery (Miguel Mena, Jeff Hiles)

‘Rising Star’ Carribean Caper Earns First Stakes Win at Ellis

'TDN Rising Star' Carribean Caper took the next step Sunday to earn her first stakes win and fourth victory overall from as many trips to the post. An eight-length romper at Fair Grounds Feb. 13, the dark bay had an easy time with first-level optional claiming foes at Keeneland Apr. 2, and resurfaced from a freshening to clear another condition here July 10. Favored in the wagering over formidable foe Magic Quest–who had run faster than Carribean Caper in her last two, both wins–she tugged her way up in between foes while hard held and was eventually given her head to move up to Magic Quest's right flank after a :23.43 quarter. Ratcheting up the pressure after a :46.26 half, she hit another gear in the final furlong to inch clear.

The winner, who was an $825,000 in utero purchase at Keeneland November, has a 2-year-old half-sister named Bombdiggity (Into Mischief) who was a $600,000 KEESEP yearling; a Tapit yearling half-sister who brought $990,000 at Fasig-Tipton Saratoga last Monday from West Point Thoroughbreds, Scarlet Oak Racing and NBS Stable; and a foal half-brother by Quality Road. Dam Checkupfromzneckup, who hails from the extended female family of A.P. Indy, was bred back to Quality Road for 2022.

Hernandez Seeks Winner’s Circle With New Roo, Carribean Caper At Ellis Park

Colby Hernandez already has blown past his win total of three at Ellis Park in Henderson, Ky., last summer, his first riding at the Pea Patch. With seven victories heading into Saturday's racing, the younger brother of Ellis Park-meet leading rider Brian Hernandez is making significant headway as a mainstay on the circuit his second year riding in Kentucky after 14 years in his native Louisiana.

The younger Hernandez has two shots in Sunday's five stakes to make a productive meet even better. He is the regular rider of 3-for-3 Carribean Caper, the tepid 9-5 favorite in the $100,000 Audubon Oaks over 2-1 Magic Quest. Both 3-year-old fillies come into the seven-furlong race off impressive allowance victories over the track. Brian Hernandez rides Magic Quest.

Hernandez also rides New Roo, who is 10-1 in the $125,000 RUNHAPPY Groupie Doll for fillies and mares at a mile. Hernandez rode New Roo for the first time last year at Ellis Park when she won an allowance race by 12 lengths, followed by a runner-up finish in the Groupie Doll won by Lady Kate, who also is back in the stakes.

Carribean Caper, trained by Al Stall, has won her three starts by a combined 17 lengths.

“She does it impressive every time,” Hernandez said. “I think every race she gets better and better. Hopefully, everything works out Sunday and we get a good trip and get the money.”

Though she made it look easy with a 4 1/2-length victory over older fillies and mares last time, Carribean Caper didn't have the smoothest of trips until she drew off.

“She had an awkward break, and the outside horses kind of wiped us about a little bit,” Hernandez said. “I had to check her. But after that, I was able to get her in stride. Middle of the turn, all I did was lean forward on her and she gave me whatever she had. It was push-button from there.

“I think she's a really, really nice horse. I don't think we've opened her up yet all the way. Hopefully, she turns into a great mare.”

[Story Continues Below]

New Roo faces a capacity field of 12 in the Groupie Doll. Trainer Tommy Drury, seeking a confidence-builder in her 5-year-old debut after ending 2020 with a couple of disappointing efforts, dropped New Roo in for the $62,500 claiming option in an allowance race at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. She won and wasn't claimed.

“She ran a good race that day,” Hernandez said. “I think at the end she got a little tired because she'd been off. But I think we're in a good spot here. She ran second in the same race last year. Hopefully we can get the money this time. I think she likes this track big-time.

“I feel great about both horses.”
