Friday’s Graded Turf Stakes Get The Weekend Started Early

With the Hall of Fame induction ceremony, a bevy of graded stakes–marked by Saturday's GI Whitney S.–plus, the annual Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale which begins Monday, Upstate New York once again makes its case as the Thoroughbred fulcrum. To get the weekend started early, we have a pair of Friday graded turf stakes scheduled which will crown winners.

First, the $400,000 GIII Saratoga Oaks Invitational S. for 3-year-old fillies serves as the middle sparkler in NYRA's Fasig-Tipton Turf Tiara series. Since Aspen Grove (Ire) (Justify) has elected to take on the boys in Saturday's GI Saratoga Derby, Papilio (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) will not have the opportunity to avenge her third-place finish when the pair faced one another in the GI Belmont Oaks July 8, a race which Aspen Grove won. Since arriving from Ireland, the Mark Casse trainee has continued to be a mark of consistency against graded company with her best finish coming with a victory in the GII Appalachian S. at Keeneland back in April.

Opposing her bid to wear the tiara will be a number of European challengers, including Caroline Street (No Nay Never) and American Sonja (GB) (Tasleet {GB}) from Joseph O'Brien's yard. The former is a Group 3 winner in Ireland and she was well beaten last time out by Blue Rose Cen (Churchill {Ire}) June 18 in the G1 French Oaks at Chantilly. Also present here, from that same race, is Elusive Princess (Fr) (Martinborough {Jpn}), who finished a respectable fifth. Trained by Jean-Phillippe Dubois, she was second in the G1 Prix Saint Alary at Longchamp May 14.

As for North American-based entries, Solo Album (Curlin), also from Casse's shedrow, won the GIII Selene S. July 1 at Woodbine, and Selenaia (Ire) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) from Jonathan Thomas's barn, who comes to New York after winning the GIII Honeymoon S. June 10 at Santa Anita, arrive in-form.

To mark the induction ceremony into horse racing's hallowed pantheon, the $500,000 GII National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame S. for 3-year-old colts going a mile on the Inner Turf brings together an interesting mix of American and European invaders.

Trainer Chad Brown saddles three entries with GISP Appraise (Ire) Kodiac {GB}), Mischievous Angel (Into Mischief) and Carl Spackler (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}), while Graham Motion sends GSW and GISP Nagirroc (Lea) to the post after the bay colt finished third in the GIII Manila S. July 7 at Belmont Park. The winner of that race, More Than Looks (More Than Ready) from the stable of Cherie DeVaux, is also present.

The European contingent includes Ocean Vision (Ire) (U S Navy Flag), who has competed in Ireland, France and Qatar and is trained by Godolphin Flying Start program grad Tim Donworth, and Mysterious Night (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) for Charlie Appleby, who will look to harness some of that late speed that he flashed the last time he was in North America when he won the GI Summer S. at Woodbine as a juvenile.

No Nay Never’s Caroline Street On Top In The Blue Wind

Joseph O'Brien trainee Caroline Street (No Nay Never–Harvestfortheworld {Ire}, by So You Think {NZ}) was highly tried after notching a July 14 debut score at Leopardstown, with the highlight of three subsequent pattern-race starts being a second to Auguste Rodin (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) in September's G2 Golden Fleece S. back at the Foxrock venue. Lining up for Saturday's G3 Al Shira'aa Racing Irish EBF Blue Wind S. coming back off a sixth in the Curragh's Sept. 22 G3 Weld Park S., she found plenty in the straight to lead home an exacta for her trainer in the 10-furlong Naas feature.

The eventual winner employed patient tactics for the most part and settled off the tempo in seventh through halfway. Making stealthy headway in the straight, the 11-2 chance launched her challenge approaching the final furlong and was ridden out in the closing stages to comfortably hold stablemate Lumiere Rock (Ire) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}) by a half-length.

“They are two very nice fillies and it was a great result,” said O'Brien. “I was quite impressed with Caroline Street and, when Dylan [Browne McMonagle] asked for a bit of gas at the bottom of the straight he was nearly taking her back. We were going a mile-and-a-quarter and she's a No Nay Never, so we were riding her patiently and he gave her a lovely confident ride. We might look at the [G1] Pretty Polly and we'll have a look at the [G1] Irish 1000 Guineas. There is the Saratoga Oaks in the Autumn and that would be a nice target for her, but she will have to go somewhere between now and then. She's handled soft [going], so I think she's pretty versatile ground-wise.”

Caroline Street, who becomes the 28th pattern-race winner for her sire (by Scat Daddy), is the first of three foals produced by G3 Gallinule S. third Harvestfortheworld (Ire) (So You Think (NZ), herself a half-sister to G2 Al Maktoum Challenge Round 1 third Rutland Boy (GB) (Bertolini) and the stakes-placed Soul Searcher (Ire) (Motivator {GB}). The April-foaled dark bay's third dam El Opera (Sadler's Wells) is kin to G1 Phoenix S. heroine Pharaoh's Delight (Fairy King), whose descendants include GI Breeders' Cup Turf and GI Man O' War S. hero Red Rocks (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Harvestfortheworld, who was bred to Munnings this year, has a 2-year-old colt and yearling colt by Into Mischief to come.

Preis Von Europa The Sunday Feature

While the world holds it breath for the upcoming Arc weekend, Sunday's action is relatively low-key with Cologne's G1 Preis von Europa the main attraction. Won last year by the rampant Alpinista (GB) (Frankel {GB}), the 12-furlong test is a competitive affair this time with Godolphin's Rebel's Romance (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) looking to emulate her by adding this to his success in Hoppegarten's G1 Grosser Preis von Berlin Aug. 14. Last year's third Sisfahan (Fr) (Isfahan {Ger}) re-enters the fray and along with Sammarco (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) boosts the line-up as the last two heroes of the G1 Deutsches Derby.

Sammarco beat the subsequent G2 T von Zastrow Stutenpreis scorer Amazing Grace (Ger) (Protectionist {Ger}) in the G1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis over 10 furlongs at Munich July 31 and holds the Arc prospects of Mendocino (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) and Torquator Tasso (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) up to the light having finished behind them in the Sept. 4 G1 Grosser Preis von Baden.

At the Curragh, the seven-furlong G3 Weld Park S. for 2-year-old fillies sees Marc Detampel and Michael Buckley's Caroline Street (No Nay Never) back up 15 days after her gallant second to Auguste Rodin (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) in Leopardstown's G2 Champions Juvenile S. Sept. 10.

Deep Impact’s Auguste Rodin Takes The Champions Juvenile

The vibes were strong about Ballydoyle's TDN Rising Star Auguste Rodin (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) ahead of Saturday's G2 KPMG Champions Juvenile S. at Leopardstown and they proved correct as the son of Rhododendron (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) got his stable off to a strong start to Irish Champions Weekend. Fine-tuned since breaking his maiden over seven furlongs at Naas July 2, the 11-10 favourite was settled by Ryan Moore behind the leading pair early which included his stablemate and fellow TDN Rising Star Tower Of London (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Sent to the front with 1 1/2 furlongs of the mile trip remaining, the bay edged right with the smooth-travelling filly Caroline Street (No Nay Never) in attendance but ultimately had the answers to score by 1 1/2 lengths.

“He's a lovely horse and was a bit idle on ground that is probably a bit slow for him,” the winning rider said of the winner, who had looked unlucky when second on debut at The Curragh June 26. Aidan O'Brien had given the impression beforehand that Auguste Rodin has been sending out the right signals at Rosegreen and said, “He's just back off his break and will come forward plenty from it. He is a horse who probably doesn't want to be in front too long, but his mum was like that, she liked to be getting there late but that's a good thing as those horses tend to last longer. He always showed a lot of pace in his work and he's a good traveller, a lovely mover and will appreciate nice ground when he gets it.”

“He has a beautiful physique and a good nature and always went through his work very impressively,” he added. “To get a horse like him by Deep Impact out of a Galileo champion mare is incredible really. He could be a Futurity Trophy or a Dewhurst horse, he has plenty of class and quality and will probably sharpen up a lot from the race. We thought he could be the type of horse who could do both the Guineas and Derby, he could be a Derby horse that could start in the Guineas. He could get a mile and a half, but he's a mile, mile-and-a-quarter horse we thought.”

Of Tower Of London, who faded in midstraight and finished a disappointing last, O'Brien added, “At home he knew more than the other horse and ideally, we would have preferred to take our time a little bit more with the other horse but there was no pace. Something had to go and it probably didn't really suit him doing that.”

Pedigree Notes

Auguste Rodin, who becomes the 151st group winner for his legendary late sire, is so far the only known foal out of the leading racemare Rhododendron who was able to win a Lockinge at a mile and the Prix de l'Opera over 10 furlongs, as well as finish second to Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) in the Oaks. Her dam is the outstanding producer Halfway To Heaven (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}), who also captured a trio of top-level contests from a mile to a mile and a quarter including the Irish 1000 Guineas. Rhododendron's full-sister Magical (Ire) was a seven-times group 1 winner, with her conquests featuring the feature race on this card and Ascot's Champion S.

Halfway To Heaven is out of the triple group scorer and G1 July Cup runner-up Cassandra Go (Ire) (Indian Ridge {Ire}), who is also responsible for the G3 Abernant S. and G3 Sandown Sprint S. winner Tickled Pink (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and the G3 Summer S. winner Theann (GB) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire). The latter went on to produce Galileo's GI First Lady S. and GI Rodeo Drive S. heroine Photo Call (Ire) and the G2 Richmond S. winner Land Force (Ire) (No Nay Never), while Tickled Pink is now the dam of the stable's upwardly-mobile Listed Criterium du Fonds Europeen de l'Elevage scorer Victoria Road (Ire) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}).
