Racing Showcase on The Hill On Cazoo Oaks and Derby Days

There will be a special interactive display on The Hill at Epsom Downs in recognition of The Queen's passion for the Thoroughbred during the official Platinum Jubilee celebrations on Cazoo Oaks and Cazoo Derby Days, June 3-4. Billed the Racing Showcase, the display will highlight the care that is shown for racehorses throughout their lives, how the racing industry is engaging and inspiring young people to look at racing as a career, the provisions the industry makes for its people and how racing is looking to reach out to communities it has not engaged with before. Amongst the organisations represented are The Racing Foundation, British Racing School, Racing to School, Epsom Riding for the Disabled, Ebony Horse Club, Retraining of Racehorses, Racing Welfare, Injured Jockeys Fund, Careers in Racing, Discover Newmarket, The National Stud, The National Horse Racing Museum and Great British Racing International.

Simon Durrant, General Manager of Epsom Downs Racecourse, said, “As part of the official celebrations for The Queen's Platinum Jubilee, we felt that it was important to highlight Her Majesty's passion both for racing and the horse in general.

“Over the 70 years of her reign, The Queen's interest extends far beyond what happens on the track and we feel it is important that this is both recognised and celebrated.

“The Racing Showcase on The Hill will enable the public to engage with and learn more about many aspects of racing and the wider equine world. I am delighted that so many organisations have agreed to participate and hopefully their efforts to educate, inform and inspire will show just what a fantastic industry and sport we work in.”

Youth Collaboration Group to Promote Careers in Racing

The Youth Collaboration Group, for young people with an interest in horseracing and marketing, was launched by the British Horseracing Authority on Thursday. Headed by Careers In Racing, the careers marketing arm of the BHA, the Youth Collaboration Group will give young people the chance to contribute their views and ideas about marketing initiatives and content used to promote careers within the industry. The group is open to anyone between 14 and 21 years of age with a keen interest in marketing, graphic design, social media, video content, events and communications. Zoe Elliott, Head of Careers Marketing and Recruitment at the BHA, said, “It's important for us at Careers In Racing to make sure that whatever we produce–be that a careers video or careers event–is relevant to the audience it is aimed at.

“We want to build a team of young people who really understand what we are trying to achieve, and who can give us some honest feedback, and co-create some of our initiatives.  At the same time, we want to support them in developing work-ready skills to enhance their CVs.

“This is a really exciting opportunity, and we can't wait to get started. Youth Collaboration Group is our working title for this initiative so the very first activity they be asked to give feedback on is the creation of a name and logo for their group. We hope that lots of young people get in touch to be involved.”

BHA, Sky Sports Partner for ‘Step on Track’ Programme

Sky Sports Racing has partnered with the British Horseracing Authority ‘Step on Track’ Programme, which will take pace via ZOOM Oct. 26-30. Conceived by the BHA’s Careers in Racing team, the focus for the week will be to develop interest in the sport from groups currently under represented in horseracing. Aimed at 16 to 19-year-olds, the first ‘Step on Track’ comprises a week-long programme of talks involving high-profile names from across all areas of the horseracing industry.

Chief Executive of At The Races and Sky Sports Racing, Matthew Imi, said: “The programme of events that the Careers in Racing team have been able to put on during next week’s ‘Step on Track’ will provide participants with a broad range of career options they might want to consider and we are very grateful to all of our colleagues within the sport who are supporting us with their time and expertise. Along with organising work experience and mentoring, this is the sort of initiative which will help expose horseracing to those from ethnic minority backgrounds and allow them to explore career opportunities in racing, the UK’s second largest spectator sport.”

Added Zoe Elliott, Head of Careers Marketing and Recruitment at the BHA, “When anyone is thinking what they might want to do work wise, they really need to be able to ‘see it’ in order to understand that they can ‘be it’ so making career options and job roles visible–and having BAME ambassadors-is really important to careers in racing. We are very much looking forward to developing the Step on Track Programme over the next few years.”

CIR Launches ‘Step On Track’ Program

Careers in Racing (CiR), the careers marketing arm of the British Horseracing Authority (BHA), announced the launch of a new program designed to introduce young people from Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) backgrounds to the horseracing industry. Step On Track, which has been developed in response to the lack of BAME representation within several areas of British racing, aims to engage young people from ethnic minorities with the sport, as well as highlighting career opportunities. The program will take place during Black History Month in the October half term (Oct. 26-30) and will include talks from inspirational racing figures, activities and the opportunity to go racing as a group at an appropriate point in the future. Upon completion of the course, the candidates will receive ongoing mentoring and guidance, as well as assistance in finding work experience placements within the industry.

The scheme will initially be open for between 6-12 people by way of a pilot, with the aim of increasing participation in future schemes. Candidates for the pilot event are being sourced in part through racing’s links with community groups such as Ebony Horse Club, Urban Equestrian, Gloucester City Riding Club and Park Palace Ponies.

Zoe Elliott, Head of Careers Marketing and Recruitment at the BHA said: “The proportion of BAME representation is an area which many sports are considering at present whether that be at participant, executive or leadership level. Racing is committed to striving to be a diverse and fully inclusive industry, but many are aware that young people from ethnic minorities may not have easily available access to learn about the sport of horseracing. We hope that Step On Track will be a positive initial step to showcase racing both as a sport and as an industry to young people who may not have encountered it before, with the longer term aim of growing the scheme to become a permanent part of our wider program of existing careers marketing activity.”
