Four Stakes on Tap at Los Alamitos

Thoroughbred racing returns to Los Alamitos Sept. 16 with a seven-day season which will include four stakes races. The first of the stakes races is the $75,000 E.B. Johnston for 3-year-olds and up who are bred or sired in California. The race at one mile will be run Sept. 17.

The following day fillies and mares will face off in the $75,000 Dark Mirage S. at 1 1/16 miles. Completing the schedule are the $75,000 Los Alamitos Special for 3-year-olds and up at 1 1/16 miles on Sept. 24 and the $75,000 Capote S. for 2-year-olds at 6 1/2 furlongs on closing day, Sept. 25.

Racing will be conducted Friday-Sunday the first week (Sept. 16-18) and Thursday-Sunday (Sept. 22-25) the final four days. Post time will be 1 p.m on weekdays and 12:30 p.m. on weekends.

Enbarr Rallies Past Montebello To Win Capote Stakes At Los Alamitos

Heavily-favored Enbarr made his first victory a stakes success, rallying past stablemate Montebello in the final eighth of a mile to capture the $75,000 Capote Saturday at Los Alamitos Race Course in Cypress, Calif.

Trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert for Baoma Corporation, the 2-year-old Brody's Cause colt sat third behind the early pace set by Montebello, the 3-2 second choice, and 12-1 shot Olympic Legend, steered outside entering the stretch and went on to win by a comfortable one length in 1:16.33 for the 6 ½ furlongs.

Second behind stablemate – and eventual Del Mar Futurity winner – Pinehurst in his debut Aug. 1, Enbarr, who was ridden by Drayden Van Dyke, paid $2.80 and $2.10 as the 2-5 choice. There was no show wagering after Rhetoric, who is also trained by Baffert, and Fascinated were scratched earlier in the day.

Montebello, who finished eight lengths clear of Olympic Legend, returned $2.10. It was the Curlin colt's second consecutive runner-up finish in a stakes. The New York bred completed the exacta behind Senbei in the Funny Cide Aug. 27 at Saratoga.

Although a 1-2 finish for the stable was the desired result, the race didn't play out exactly as assistant trainer Mike Marlow thought it would.

“We thought Enbarr would be showing the way early and Montebello would be a couple of lengths off him,'' he said. “They broke and that's how it ended up with Montebello in front and Enbarr tracking.

“They're both good horses. I think Montebello is going to be better around two turns. He's got that high cruising speed while Enbarr is just a fast horse.''

Van Dyke, who was aboard Enbarr for the first time, was impressed with the colt purchased for $200,000 as a yearling.

“I just played the break and when (Montebello) showed more speed I let my horse relax,'' he said. “He gave me a good run around the turn and then really kicked into gear at the top of the stretch when he switched leads. He was just idling at the end once he got past.''

Out of the Warrior's Reward mare Star of Gallantry, Enbarr increased his earnings to $57,500.

Racing resumes Sunday at Los Alamitos. Post time is 1 p.m.

The program is highlighted by a pair of stakes – the $100,000 Los Alamitos Special for older horses at 1 1/16 miles and the $75,000 Dark Mirage for older fillies and mares at one mile.

The Special is the fifth of nine races while the Dark Mirage is the eighth.

Baffert Nominates Four For Capote Stakes, Two For Los Alamitos Special

Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert nominated four 2-year-olds to the $75,000-guaranteed Capote Stakes.

Named in honor of the champion 2-year-old of 1986, the Capote is scheduled to be run at 6 ½ furlongs at Los Alamitos Race Course in Cypress, Calif., Saturday, Sept. 18.

Baffert also nominated a pair to the $100,000 Los Alamitos Special, a race at 1 1/16 miles set for Sunday, Sept. 19.

Topping the list of nominees for Baffert to the Capote is Murray, an impressive first-out winner before disappointing as the favorite in the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in Del Mar, Calif., Sept. 6.

A $300,000 purchase at the Keeneland September sale last year and owned by a partnership that includes SF Racing LLC and Starlight Racing, Murray broke his maiden by 10 ¾ lengths July 25 before finishing fifth of six in the Futurity. The son of Street Sense and the Tiznow mare Now Now has banked $48,000.

Baffert also nominated Montebello, a New York-bred son of Curlin who won narrowly in his debut Aug. 7 at Del Mar before finishing second in the Funny Cide at Saratoga 20 days later, and the maidens Rhetoric and Enbarr.

The other nominees include Los Alamitos graduates Olympic Legend and Richards the Dream and Fascinated, who won at first asking – via disqualification – on the Golden Gate Fields turf Sept. 4.

Baffert, who won the inaugural Los Alamitos Special – when it was contested at 1 ¼ miles – with Dabster in 2018, nominated Leading Score and Magic On Tap this year.

A lightly-raced 7-year-old, Leading Score owns a victory at Los Alamitos, capturing an optional claimer at one mile during the 2017 Los Angeles County Fair meet.

Owned by breeders Patti and Hal Earnhardt III, the son of Midnight Lute has won three of 10 and earned $141,810.

Magic On Tap will be shortening up for breeder Summer Wind Equine LLC after trailing in the Grade 1 Pacific Classic at 10 furlongs last month. The 5-year-old Tapit horse has won three of eight and banked $234,300.

The other nominations to the Los Alamitos Special are Bold Endeavor, Border Town, Luvluv, Manhattan Up, Margot's Boy, Red Storm Risen, and Sash.

Entries for the Capote will be taken Wednesday, Sept. 18 and for the Los Alamitos Special the following day.
