Ride A Comet Ends Pink Lloyd’s Winning Streak In Kennedy Road

Mark Casse trainees Ride a Comet and Souper Stonehenge swept the Kennedy Road Stakes exacta on Saturday at Woodbine in Toronto, Ontario, ending the win streak of reigning three-time champion male sprinter Pink Lloyd.

Patrick Husbands engineered the winning trip aboard the 5-2 second choice, Ride a Comet, who is now two-for-two since returning to action last month after a two-year layoff.

Multiple graded stakes winner Silent Poet sprinted out to lead the talented field of seven in the six-furlong Grade 2 stakes with Eskiminzin pressing through fractions of :22.77 and :44.79, while Souper Stonehenge and Dixie's Gamble stalked the pace.

Riding a 10-race win streak, even-money favorite Pink Lloyd raced outside of foes and staged a late rally from the four-path on the turn, but early trailer Ride a Comet gained ground along the rail and shot outside the front-runners in the stretch en route to a 1 1/4-length victory, with Live Oak Plantation's Souper Stonehenge finishing second under Emma-Jayne Wilson.

Owned by breeder My Meadowview Farm and John Oxley, the 5-year-old son of Candy Ride and Appealing Zophie came within one-fifth of a second of Pink Lloyd's track record, winning in 1:08.25.

Ride a Comet paid $6.90 to win and combined with 9-1 shot Souper Stonehenge for a 2-1 exacta worth $50.30 for a $2 ticket. Pink Lloyd was a game third, finishing two lengths behind the runner-up and just ahead of Silent Poet. Eskiminzin, Roaring Forties and Dixie's Gamble completed the field.

“He's my favorite horse of all time…He went a good race, he showed he's all class,” said Husbands, who was aboard for all four of Ride a Comet's Woodbine starts including his impressive two-length comeback victory here on October 16.

“The last time I rode him, it was the first time we sprint and his first time in two years going seven-eighths. And he broke sharp, you know, and I eased him back because it was his first time in a long time so after the race I said to Mark, 'he left there running and I eased him back.' He said 'alright, we're going against Pink Lloyd next start.'

“Pink Lloyd, you have to respect him. He's a legend at Woodbine, and it's a great honor to run against him and try to beat him. When you beat him, you've got to be really happy, but you have to respect him.”

Ride a Comet, who also won the Charlie Barley Stakes over one-mile of turf at Woodbine in 2018 with Husbands and the Grade 2 Del Mar Derby over 1  1/8 miles later that year, now has seven wins from a dozen lifetime starts.

Vekoma Retired, to Stand for $20K at Spendthrift

Multiple Grade I-winning millionaire Vekoma (Candy Ride {Arg}–Mona de Momma, by Speightstown) has been retired from racing and arrived at B. Wayne Hughes’ Spendthrift Farm where the 4-year-old will take up stud duty in 2021. His fee has been set at $20,000 S&N.

This year’s impressive winner of the GI Carter H. and GI Runhappy Metropolitan H., Vekoma was scratched as the morning-line favorite in Saturday’s GI Breeders’ Cup Sprint after spiking a fever upon arrival at Keeneland. He will be given a few days to settle in at Spendthrift before being available for inspection.

“Precocious, brilliantly fast, carried his speed around two turns–you name it, Vekoma could do it,” said Ned Toffey, Spendthrift general manager. “On top of that, he is a Grade I winner by a Grade I winner and out of a Grade I winner, so he’s truly a rare package in the breeding world. You won’t find a more brilliant or better-bred son of Candy Ride. We are extremely excited about his future at stud and look forward to showing him off to breeders after he’s been allowed a few days to settle in here … Any time a horse as good and as deserving as Vekoma does not get the opportunity to run in the Breeders’ Cup, you are obviously disappointed for the horse and for the connections. There’s so much hard work that gets put in. Ultimately, you have to credit George Weaver and his team for having an incredible season and always doing right by Vekoma through some hard luck at the end.”

Trained by George Weaver for owners R. A. Hill Stable and Gatsas Stables, Vekoma captured graded stakes wins at two, three and four. The chestnut took the GIII Nashua S. at Aqueduct to complete an undefeated juvenile campaign, then went on to score a dominant 3 1/2-length win in the 1 1/8-mile GII Toyota Blue Grass S. at Keeneland as a 3-year-old.

This year, Vekoma was perfect with wins at three different racetracks, kicking off his 4-year-old season with a 3 3/4-length victory in Gulfstream’s Sir Shackleton S. in March, adding a dazzling 7 1/4-length win in the Carter at Aqueduct, earning a career-high 110 Beyer Speed Figure, and scoring a front-running win in the prestigious Met Mile while stopping the clock in 1:32 4/5–just .15 seconds off the stakes record for the 129-year-old New York fixture.

An earner of $1,245,525, Vekoma was bred in Kentucky by Alpha Delta Stables. His dam’s career high came with a victory in the GI Humana Distaff H. Vekoma’s second dam, Society Gal, is a half-sister to successful sire Mr. Greeley.

Vekoma becomes the third Met Mile winner in the last four years to take up stud duty at Spendthrift. Mor Spirit, the 2017 winner, and Mitole, the 2019 winner, both stand at the historic Lexington-based farm.

For more information about Vekoma or to schedule an inspection, contact Des, Mark or Brian at 859-294-0030, or visit SpendthriftFarm.com.

Royal Flag Flies Late To Capture Turnback The Alarm Stakes

W.S. Farish's Royal Flag arrived at the Grade 3, $100,000 Turnback the Alarm off of three straight placings against stakes company, but finally prevailed when saving ground along the rail and displaying a late kick to capture the 1 1/8-mile event for fillies and mares over the Aqueduct main track.

The 4-year-old daughter of multiple champion-producing stallion Candy Ride broke sharply from post 2 under Trevor McCarthy and secured a spot to the inside as Graceful Princess commanded the pace into the first turn through splits of 24.38 and 49.52 seconds over the fast main track.

Approaching the far turn, Graceful Princess gave way as Nonna Madeline and Mrs. Orb raced in tandem on the front end with Royal Flag in pursuit. At the top of the stretch, McCarthy angled Royal Flag three paths to the outside and was in front past the sixteenth pole to win by by 2 ¼ lengths in a final time of 1:54.08.

Mrs. Orb finished 1 ½ lengths ahead of third-place finisher Nonna Madeline. Another Broad and Graceful Princess completed the order of finish.

“She comes from off the pace, but I got a great trip,” McCarthy said. “I was able to save some ground and then got her outside and she gave me a great kick. She's a nice filly and she gave me everything she had. As soon as she came off the turn, I went lefthanded and then went back to the right and she really accelerated and went right by the other two horses.”

McCarthy said he came prepared for Saturday's race.

“I did a lot of homework on this race,” said McCarthy. “It was a five-horse field and I watched every horse about three or four times and kind of figured out where they were going to be and where the best spot for my horse would be and where she would feel comfort-wise. You have a bunch of plans in your head of what can work out and you take it from the break and figure out which plan you are going to use.”

Trained by Chad Brown, who sent out 2016 Turnback the Alarm winner Lewis Bay, Royal Flag was previously a hard-fought second to Nonna Madeline in the Lady's Secret at Monmouth Park after acquiring graded stakes black type when second in the Grade 3 Shuvee at Saratoga and third in the Grade 3 Molly Pitcher at Monmouth Park.

Royal Flag, the even-money favorite, returned $4.10 and bolstered her career earnings to $245,520 through a consistent record of 8-4-2-2.

Bred in Kentucky by her owner, Royal Flag is out of the multiple black type producing Mineshaft mare Sea Gull, who also produced five-time graded stakes winner Catalina Cruiser and multiple stakes winner Eagle.

Live racing resumes on Sunday at the Big A, featuring the Grade 3, $100,000 Nashua [Race 9, 3:47 p.m.] for 2-year-olds going a one-turn mile over the main track. First post is 11:50 a.m. Eastern.
