GOLDEN PLUME (f, 3, Candy Ride {Arg}–Nebraska Tornado {MG1SW-Fr, G1SP-Eng, $655,044}, by Storm Cat) sat the trip and kicked away in the stretch for a promising first appearance. Pounded down to 3-5 favoritism, the homebred grabbed a spot in third at the fence as a longshot sped far clear. She advanced willingly and in hand as the frontrunner started to tire heading for home, seized the lead at the top of the lane with no resistance and lengthened her stride from there to dominate. Second choice Lisheen (Into Mischief) completed the exacta. The winner has a 2-year-old half-sister by Twirling Candy and a yearling half-brother by Arrogate. 2021 Fees for Lane’s End; Quality Road Down to $150,000

On the heels of the announcement Friday that top three leading second-crop sire Daredevil will return to the U.S. from Turkey to stand at Lane’s End Farm, the Versailles nursery and stallion station released its full roster and stud fees for 2021. A total of 21 stallions will make up the roster, led again by stalwart Quality Road, who gets a fee cut from $200,000 to $150,000. A majority of key breeding sheds are cutting 2021 stud fees due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Candy Ride (Arg) will also see his fee slashed from $100,000 to $75,000. A number of the other stallions on the roster are also getting breaks on fees. A few will stay at the same level as in 2020, including the popular City of Light, whose first foals are weanlings this year, and Twirling Candy. Both will continue to stand for $40,000.

Lane’s End has three young horses retiring to its stallion barn this year: champion and Breeders’ Cup winner Game Winner, who will stand for $30,000; this year’s GI Santa Anita Derby winner Honor A. P., who will stand for $15,000; and GI Santa Anita H. winner Gift Box, who will bring $10,000. All three of the new retirees will stand alongside their sires at Lane’s End: Candy Ride, Honor Code, and Twiring Candy, respectively.

In addition, Liam’s Map’s fee of $30,000, a cut from $35,000 for 2020, is only locked in until Nov. 5, with changes possible after that date due to Breeders’ Cup results. Among his runners who may contest the Breeders’ Cup Nov. 6-7 are Runhappy Debutante S. winner and GI Darley Alcibiades S. runner-up Crazy Beautiful and GIII Miss Preakness S. winner Wicked Whisper.

Champion Game Winner Retired to Lane’s End

Champion Game Winner (Candy Ride {Arg}–Indyan Giving, by A.P. Indy) has been retired from racing and will stand the 2021 season at Lane’s End in Versailles, Kentucky. A stud fee will be forthcoming.

During his championship juvenile season, ‘TDN Rising Star‘ Game Winner was undefeated in four starts–a 5 3/4-length score in his career unveiling at Del Mar followed by the GI Del Mar Futurity, GI American Pharoah S. and GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Churchill Downs. After earning the champion 2-year-old title for the 2018 season, he returned at three to finish runner-up in the GI Santa Anita Derby and GII Rebel S. and finished fifth in the GI Kentucky Derby.

“As a 2-year-old, he was just phenomenal and he really brought it to that Championship level,” said Bob Baffert. “To do what he did really showed that he was the best of the best. Candy Ride was a brilliant racehorse and he throws brilliance, and with Game Winner, the minute he showed that brilliance, I knew we had something special.”

Game Winner was most recently seen winning the GIII Los Alamitos Derby by five lengths.

“After the Los Al Derby, he had a high suspensory injury, and Bob was trying to work through it and get him over it, and never could to his satisfaction,” said Lane’s End’s Bill Farish.

Bred in Kentucky by Summer Wind Farm, Game Winner is out of Indyan Giving, who has also produced graded-stakes winner Flagstaff (Speightstown). His second dam is Champion Fleet Indian who won five graded stakes and earned over $1 million. To date, his sire Candy Ride has produced 16 Grade I winners and is the fourth leading active sire by lifetime earnings.

“Champion 2-year-olds make great sires,” added Farish. “Street Sense, Uncle Mo, American Pharoah, and now Nyquist looks very promising. All were the very best of their generation and now are among the elite stallions in America. Game Winner dominated in his championship year and was a graded-stakes winner at three. He is a champion from the immediate family of a champion, so we are honored that Gary and Mary West have entrusted Lane’s End with his stallion career.”

Consigned by Lane’s End to the 2017 Keeneland September Sale, Game Winner realized $110,000 from agent Ben Glass.

“Mary and I have been excited about Game Winner since the day Ben Glass bought him for us at Keeneland,” said Gary West, who campaigned the champion colt. “These special horses are so hard to come by and to have a Champion means everything to us. I am so pleased he will stand at Lane’s End and I plan on supporting him extensively as I have with my other stallions, alongside the superior group of shareholders they have put together.”

“This includes Alpha Delta, Summer Wind Farm, SF Bloodstock, Mt. Brilliant Farm, Sea Horse Breeders, West Point and St. Elias. They are among the best breeders in America and undoubtedly will support him and contribute greatly to his chances to be a successful stallion.”

The 4-year-old retires with five wins and two seconds from eight career starts and earnings of $2,027,500.

Candy Ride Homebred Runs Away to Rising Stardom at Keeneland

Therideofalifetime (Candy Ride {Arg}) built on a promising debut with a sharp wire-to-wire score early on the blockbuster Saturday card at Keeneland to become the latest ‘TDN Rising Star’. Rallying to be runner-up behind the sharp Jackie’s Warrior (Maclean’s Music) when unveiled June 19 at Churchill, the chestnut was backed down to 3-2 favoritism here and easily outbroke the field. Showing the way in the clear through splits of :22.45 and :46.02, Therideofalifetime faced a brief challenge to his outside from second choice Swill (Munnings) in early stretch, but made short work of that rival and burst clear past the eighth pole en route to an 8 1/4-length romp in quick time, getting his last quarter-mile in :23.79. Swill held for second. The winner is the first foal out of a dam who sold to Joe Minor of JSM Equine for $275,000 at Keeneland January last year. She was a stakes winner as a juvenile and graded stakes placed at three.
