Women Jockeys’ World Cup Cancelled For Second Year

The Women Jockey's World Cup has been cancelled for the second year running due to continuing COVID-19 pandemic restrictions. Started at Bro Park in Stockholm, Sweden in 2017, the event is traditionally staged in June and has seen riders from 12 countries compete during the first three editions.

Dennis Madsen Svensk Galopp's Director of Racing said, “It is very frustrating to have to cancel the Women Jockeys' World Cup for a second year running.

“The international nature of the event requires early planning and even with the concessions that are made for international sports, uncertainty around quarantine rules for jockeys returning home from Sweden forced our decision.

“We remain committed to creating high profile opportunities for top female riders and hope to return the event in 2022. Racing in Sweden continues to grow in popularity, and we recently announced a record entry for the Swedish Derby and Oaks series. The Women Jockeys' World Cup is our most popular international event and we look forward to reinstating it at the earliest opportunity.”

Frigid Temperatures Force Oaklawn To Add Friday’s Card To List Of Cancellations

Due to the frigid temperatures and out of concern for the safety of its equine athletes and jockeys, Oaklawn has received permission to cancel Friday's nine-race card.

Oaklawn had already canceled the Saturday – Monday cards based on the weather forecast and rescheduled three graded stakes – the $250,000 Bayakoa (G3), $600,000 Razorback (G3) and $750,000 Southwest (G3) – to Saturday, Feb. 20.

Oaklawn will remain open for casino gaming and simulcast racing. The casino will remain open until 5 a.m.

Live racing is scheduled to resume Thursday, Feb. 18 with a 1 p.m. first post.

Remington Cancels Wednesday Card; No Power In Stable Area Due To Oklahoma Ice Storm

A rare October ice storm in Oklahoma City has forced Remington Park to cancel Wednesday night's race card, according to the track's Twitter account. It is the first time the National Weather Service has ever issued and ice storm warning in Tulsa or Norman during the month of October, according to The Washington Post.

Freezing ran created thick ice on trees and branches around Oklahoma City, knocking out power to hundreds of thousands.

“Due to extensive tree damage causing unsafe travel conditions, uncertain power situations and lack of power in the stable area, the racing card for tonight, Wed., Oct. 28, has been cancelled,” reads the statement on Remington Park's Twitter account.

Indiana Grand: Card Scrapped After Second Race Due To Intense Rain

The remainder of the racing program at Indiana Grand was canceled following the second race Tuesday, Oct. 20.

The mutual decision was made between jockeys, track management and horsemen to call the cancellation of the remaining eight races, which included seven Thoroughbred and one Quarter Horse event. The area received several inches of continuous rain over the past 36 hours with more in the immediate forecast. The cancellation will provide the track maintenance department adequate time to prepare for the Wednesday racing program with a 2:05 p.m. start.

Racing is held Monday through Thursday until Thursday, Nov. 19. All-Quarter Horse racing is set for Saturday, Oct. 3 and Saturday, Oct. 24. For more information, go to www.indianagrand.com.
