Forecast Rains Force Cancellation of Sunday Racing at Santa Anita; Stakes Rescheduled

With a forecast that calls for more than two inches of rainfall Sunday, officials at Santa Anita Park have preemptively canceled live racing scheduled for that afternoon. The program was to feature the GIII $100,000 Las Virgenes S. for 3-year-old fillies and the GIII San Marcos S. for older male turf horses. Those two races have been rescheduled for next Saturday, Feb. 10, with the races to be redrawn Wednesday, Feb. 7.

Saturday's forecast calls for no such inclement weather and racing will go on as planned. Four graded contests are carded, headed by the GIII Robert B. Lewis S. for 3-year-old males. The GII Santa Monica S., GIII Thunder Road S. and GIII Megahertz S. are part of a program that kicks off at 12:15 p.m. PT.

Those four events are part of the 1/ST Racing Tour and also includes the Listed Swale S. and GIII Holy Bull S. from Gulfstream Park. All of the 1/ST Racing Tour races will be shown on Peacock and CNBC.

Louisiana Downs, Turfway and Oaklawn Cancel Cards Due to Winter Freeze

Following a spate of cancellations throughout the east, Louisiana Downs announced it will cancel the Thursday, Jan. 18 card due to continuing storms and freezing conditions throughout the region. The Bossier City oval also cancelled Monday and Tuesday's cards.

Also forced to alter plans due to the weather, Turfway Park in Florence, Kentucky announced it will cancel Friday and Saturday's live racing. Saturday's Leonatus S. will be redrawn and is expected to be carded for Feb. 2. Friday's forecast called for about one inch of snow during the day with the feels-like temperature around 8 degrees and a northwest wind at 9 to 15 mph during the evening. Although the snow is expected to depart by Saturday, the wind chill will remain frigid, around 6 degrees at first post. Thursday's card remains unchanged.

Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Arkansas has also added its name to those forced to cancel this week. The track has cancelled racing Friday, Jan. 19 through Jan. 21. Simulcast will remain open Thursday through Sunday from 11a.m. to 6p.m.

Air Quality Concerns Cause Midwest Cancellations

Dangerous air quality conditions caused by wildfires in Canada have forced the cancellation of the live racing programs at Hawthorne Race Course in suburban Chicago and at Horseshoe Indianapolis further to the south and east.

“Based on the poor air quality in Indiana today's races have been canceled,” a tweet from the track read. “This decision was made mutually with our horsemen based on the safety of the participants in our racing program coming first. A decision on bringing today's races back will be made shortly.”

Track announcer John Dooley tweeted a graphic from WRTV in Indianapolis indicating that the air quality index (AQI) in the state capitol was a 'very unhealthy' 257 as of 8 a.m. ET Wednesday. Racing is scheduled to return Thursday at 2:10 p.m. ET.

 

 

 

“Safety and consideration for our equine and human athletes always comes first, no matter what the circumstances are,” said Eric Halstrom, Vice President and General Manager of Racing. “We are fortunate to have a great partnership with our racing organizations, and as a group, we decided this decision was the best for everyone involved. We even want to take into consideration the safety of our racing fans who enjoy sitting trackside to watch the horses.”

The AQI as of 7 a.m. ET in Cicero, Illinois, was also in the very unhealthy range at 218, according to Hawthorne's Jim Miller, prompting track officials to take a similar decision. Miller said racing is expected to return Thursday.

Racing at Belterra Park near Cincinnati, at Presque Isle Downs in Erie, Pennyslyvania, and at JACK Thistledown outside of Cleveland was also called off.

Tracks on the eastern seaboard were also forced to cancel racing over the last few weeks, the result of wildfires in Eastern Canada.

Laurel Cancels Sunday Program Ahead of Excessive Heat Forecast

Due to excessive heat forecast for the Mid-Atlantic region, and with an abundance of caution for its horses, horsemen and fans, the Maryland Jockey Club will not host live racing at Laurel Sunday, July 24.

Temperatures are expected to reach the mid-90s through the weekend with near-record highs approaching 98 degrees forecast for Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

Races that were in the condition book and all extras for Sunday will now be used for an additional live program Thursday, July 28. Entries will be taken Saturday, July 23.

Laurel Park will remain open Sunday for simulcasting.

Live action is scheduled to return to Laurel Park with an eight-race program Friday starting at 12:40 p.m.
