Dangerously Low Wind Chill Values Force NYRA To Cancel Saturday Card

The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) has canceled Saturday's live racing program at Aqueduct Racetrack due to dangerously low wind chill values forecast to impact the New York City metropolitan area on Saturday.

The current National Weather Service forecast, which aligns with NYRA's independent weather services, is calling for extremely cold temperatures and sustained winds creating wind chill values as low as -5. As a result, NYRA has canceled Saturday's card in the interest of the safety of all participants.

Aqueduct Racetrack will be open for simulcasting on Saturday.

Saturday's featured race – the $100,000 Franklin Square – will be rescheduled for Saturday, Jan. 22.

The training track at Belmont Park will be closed on Saturday, but the jogging barns will remain open.

Live racing at Aqueduct will resume on Sunday, Jan. 16 with a nine-race card headlined by the $100,000 Ladies. First post on Sunday is 12:20 p.m. Eastern.

NYRA Bets is the official wagering platform of Aqueduct Racetrack, and the best way to bet every race of the winter meet. Available to horseplayers nationwide, the NYRA Bets app is available for download today on iOS and Android at www.NYRABets.com.

Winter Storm Forces Thursday Cancellations At Laurel Park, Charles Town

The Maryland Jockey Club has canceled Thursday's nine-race program at Laurel Park because of the lingering effects of a winter storm earlier in the week that brought rounds of sleet, freezing rain and snowfall to the area.

Laurel, Pimlico, Rosecroft and the MJC OTB Network remain open for simulcasting.

Live racing is set to resume Friday with a nine-race program with first race post of 12:25 p.m.

Due to the winter weather moving through the region later today, Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races in West Virginia has cancelled its live racing program for Thursday evening, Jan. 6. Live racing is currently slated to resume on Friday, Jan. 7 with a first race post time of 7:00 P.M. EST.

Santa Anita Cancels Thursday Card Due To Rain; Friday’s Stakes Pushed To The Weekend

With substantial rain forecast for Southern California later this week, Santa Anita Park has proactively cancelled racing for Thursday, Dec. 30.

Live racing will return Friday, Dec. 31, but the three turf stakes races slated for that day have been moved to the weekend when the weather should be much improved.

The Grade 3 Robert J. Frankel now will be run on Saturday, Jan. 1, with the two 2-year-old turf stakes (Eddie Logan & Blue Norther) to be held on Sunday, Jan. 2.

With six races shifted from turf to dirt, resulting in 10 program scratches, business prospects for Santa Anita's 85th Winter/Spring Meet opener were a bit subdued on Sunday, but business was indeed brisk. With $2.3 million wagered on-track, total pari-mutuel handle was $19.4 million, making it the third-best Opening Day handle ever.

“We really want to thank the fans for supporting us and the horsemen for going with the changes and participating,” said Santa Anita Senior Vice President and General Manager, Nate Newby. “Although it didn't rain yesterday, we had over 4 ½ inches of rain in the five days leading into Sunday, so the decision was made to come off the turf.

“I want to acknowledge the great job Dennis Moore and his team did yesterday in having the main track in tremendous shape. We had great racing and some great performances, just a fabulous day.”

Santa Anita Cancels Dec. 30 Racing

Officials at Santa Anita Park have made the proactive decision to cancel the program scheduled for this Thursday, Dec. 30, given a weather forecast that calls for additional significant rainfall in and around the track. The two turf races scheduled for Sunday's opening day card–the GI American Oaks and GII Santa Anita Mathis Brothers Mile S. and GIII San Gabriel S.–were transferred to the main track owing to the underfoot conditions. Racing will continue Friday, Dec. 31.

The three turf stakes scheduled for Friday have been pushed back to the weekend with a more favorable weather pattern expected. The GIII Robert J. Frankel S. will now be run Saturday, Jan. 1, while the Eddie Logan S. and Blue Norther S. for 2-year-old males and fillies, respectively, will take place Sunday, Jan. 2.

Saturday's card also features the GII Joe Hernandez S., the GIII Sham S. and the GIII La Canada S. In addition to the transferred juvenile stakes, Sunday's program also includes the $75,000 Kalookan Queen S.
