Collusion Illusion and Tamarkuz to Stand at Ballcroy Bloodstock for 2023

GI Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile winner Tamarkuz (Speightstown–Without You Babe, by Lemon Drop Kid) and GISW Collusion Illusion (Twirling Candy–Natalie Grace, by First Dude) will stand at Ballcroy Bloodstock in Ontario for 2023.

Collusion Illusion captured five of 13 races with three of those wins coming in graded events. His career high was a win in the GI Bing Crosby S. and he earned over $480,000. He will stand for $6,000.

“Collusion Illusion is an exciting stallion prospect, and we are thrilled to have him standing in Ontario,” said Ballycroy Director of Bloodstock Michaela Kemp. “He is a great addition to our stallion roster, and we look forward to filling his first book of mares this season.”

Tamarkuz, who is in his third year at stud, won eight of 20 races and earned over $1.8 million. He concluded his career with a victory in the 2016 BC Dirt Mile and will stand for $4,000.

“Tamarkuz has been well supported in Kentucky by Shadwell and their mares,” said Kemp. “We are looking forward to seeing his progeny progress more on the track with time as the Speightstowns do.”

Gaughan Becomes Independent Chair of Ontario Racing Board of Directors

Andrew Gaughan has been appointed the next Independent Chair of the Ontario Racing Board of Directors. Jamie Martin will be an Executive Consultant to the board.

Gaughan became a manager with Woodbine Entertainment Group (then the Ontario Jockey Club) in 1994, and over the next three decades served in senior leadership positions with WEG, Magna Entertainment Corporation, Scientific Games Corporation (NASDAQ listed), and Sportech PLC a UK based publicly traded (LSE) gaming technology business.

“Andrew is the ideal candidate to step into the role,” said outgoing Independent Chair John Hayes. “Over an accomplished career as a senior executive, including the CEO role at Sportech PLC, he developed the skills that will be required to facilitate collaboration with Ontario Racing's partners and stakeholders and ensure that the industry is well positioned for success in the coming years.”

Over the previous 30-plus years Martin has held leadership positions with Grand River Raceway, Woodbine Entertainment Group, and the Western Fair Association.

“Jamie's experience with both the Standardbred and Thoroughbred breeds, and his relationships with racetrack and other industry partners across the province make him an invaluable asset to the Ontario Racing Board of Directors,” said Ontario Racing Board and Executive Committee Member Katherine Curry. “We look forward to tapping into his wealth of racing knowledge to help the industry achieve its strategic goals.”

Gaughan and Martin begin their roles Nov. 1.

Cape Canaveral Passes Away at 26

GSW Cape Canaveral (Mr. Prospector–Seaside Attraction, by Seattle Slew) passed away at age 26 at Highfield Stock Farm in Canada, where he stood for 14 years. He had been battling severe cellulitis and was humanely euthanized. He was pensioned last fall.

Cape Canaveral has been one of the leading sires in Canada since 2008 with 20 crops of racing age, 541 foals, 429 starters, 21 black-type winners, 315 winners of 1,080 races and earnings of over $17.8 million.

Out of GI Kentucky Oaks winner Seaside Attraction, Cape Canaveral raced for owner/breeder Overbrook Farm and D. Wayne Lukas, winning three of four races, including the GIII San Miguel S. He earned $128,640.

“Cape has left his impression on all those fortunate enough to have been tasked with his care,” said Highfield President Adrian Munro. “His longevity in the breeding shed is a testament to Cal Britton, Amber Jacobson, Jennifer Buck and Kelly Robinson who have impeccably cared for him through his tenure at Highfield. He was the foundation sire for our breeding program and he will be greatly missed.”

Purse Increase at Assiniboia

Effective Monday, July 18, 2022, purses at Assiniboia Downs have been increased across the board. The highlights include a 25% increase in maiden special weight races to $20,000 and a 20% hike for open allowance heats for $24,000 while the new minimum purse for 'open' stakes races has been raised to $40,000.

“Our community of owners, trainers and jockeys continue to be so supportive of the racing program here,” said Darren Dunn, CEO of the Winnipeg, Manitoba-area track. “We are happy to be in a position that we can introduce these increases to the purses. We fully appreciate what it takes to put on a season of competitive racing and we look forward to continuing to work together to deliver the best show we possibly can.”

The track reports better than 60% wagering growth in the furst part of the season. According to a release, competitive racing along with reduced takeouts and the free Player Portal have been attributed to that success.

Assiniboia Downs races nightly Monday through Wednesday. The track stages the Manitoba Derby Aug. 1.
